Day 2 Completed

Ospina Leads Again

Level 18 : 4,000/8,000, 1,000 ante
Daniel Ospina
Daniel Ospina

At the start of Day 2 of the 2011 PokerStars.net Latin American Poker Tour Peru Main Event, Daniel Ospina was the chip leader with 264,200, almost 100,000 more than the 2nd-place player. The end of Day 2 looks strikingly similar. Ospina has bagged the most chips for the second day in a row with 1,140,000. The next closest player, Pablo Gonzales, has 657,000.

It wasn't as simple as all that for Ospina. He started the day trending slightly downwards while players like Derek Lerner, Joao "Jack Bauer" Neto, and Pablo Gonzales overtook him. But Lerner seemed to get steamed by Bauer; Bauer was ultimately undone by reckless aggression; and Gonzales seemed content to sit on his stack. In the second half of the day Ospina exercised a great deal of patience, pounced when he could, and applied a massive amount of pressure to his opponents when he found himself on a table loaded with chips late in the day.

Play started out on a somber note with the announcement that Andre Akkari would not return to play his six-figure stack due to the overnight death of his father. Akkari's stack was blinded off all day and squeaked into the money, finishing in 43rd place. Roberto Brenes was not so fortunate. He wound up as the bubble boy when he made an aggressive play with {j-Spades}{9-Spades} against the hyper-aggressive Bauer and ran into pocket jacks.

For now the huge story is Ospina. He's got a massive lead on the field as we head into Day 3, and plenty of MTT experience to ride that lead all the way to the final table.

We'll have full chip counts and the re-draw later tonight. Until then you can find us at the bar.

Michael Schernthaner Eliminated; Play Halted

Level 18 : 4,000/8,000, 1,000 ante

Michael Schernthaner has been eliminated in 25th place, all in pre-flop with {9-Clubs}{8-Spades} against {k-Spades}{j-Hearts}. Schernthaner's hand never improved.

With 24 players left, play is now over for the day. The 24 survivors are bagging their chips and will return tomorrow at noon for Day 3 with 19 minutes left in Level 18. It appears that Daniel Ospina is once again the overnight chip leader with about a million in chips.

Rodrigues Doubles, Play Continues

Level 18 : 4,000/8,000, 1,000 ante

We're down to 25 players now, looking for one more elimination to end play for the day. At Table 2, Jose Carlos Rodrigues three-bet all in for his last 60,000 after a player opened to 19,000. That player called with pocket 5s; Rodrigues showed pocket 9s. Pocket 9s held to double Rodrigues up and extend the day just a bit longer.

Gonzalo de Azalga Eliminated

Level 18 : 4,000/8,000, 1,000 ante

Gonzalo de Azalga will have to wait until at least his next tournament to make a deep run. He got a short stack all in pre-flop with {a-}{10-} and ran into {a-}{q-}. Azalga never improved.

Ospina Over Lopez Again

Level 18 : 4,000/8,000, 1,000 ante

We've witnessed another huge hand between Karlo Lopez and Daniel Ospina. On a flop of {j-Diamonds}{7-Diamonds}{8-Clubs}, Ospina checked to Lopez, who bet 20,000. Ospina then check-raised to 55,000. Lopez quickly tossed a call into the pot. On the {2-Diamonds} turn, Ospina tanked for about a minute and a half as he eyed Lopez' stack (roughly 250,000 behind). Ospina then moved all in.

Lopez was clearly pained. He tanked for five full minutes, peaking back at his cards several times. He asked a floor if he could show his hand to Ospina; the floor replied that doing so would result in a one-round penalty. Lopez opened his hand anyway, revealing {a-Clubs}{j-Clubs}.

"Why are you going all in?" he asked Ospina. Ospina said nothing. Finally, Lopez mucked his cards and left the table to sit out his penalty. Ospina did not show his cards. He silently collected the pot to climb to about 900,000.

Last Level

Level 18 : 4,000/8,000, 1,000 ante

One way or another this will be the last level of the night. Either the field will consolidate to 24 survivors and play will be halted, or play will stop when the level reaches 0:00 remaining on the clock.

Level: 18

Blinds: 4,000/8,000

Ospina Back On Top

Level 17 : 3,000/6,000, 1,000 ante
Daniel Ospina
Daniel Ospina

Daniel Ospina continues to get the job done. With the board reading {9-Diamonds}{6-Clubs}{5-Spades}{2-Diamonds}{q-Hearts}, Ospina checked to his lone opponent, Karlo Lopez. Lopez made a hefty bet of 76,000. Ospina thought and thought and thought some more before finally calling with unimproved {a-Diamonds}{j-Diamonds}. It was a great hero call, as Lopez was on a stone bluff and mucked. Dragging that pot increased Ospina's count to 830,000 and knocked Lopez back to about 300,000.

Gonzales Turns the Screws

Level 17 : 3,000/6,000, 1,000 ante

New chip leader Pablo Gonzales appears to have new qualms about putting the short-stacked players to the test. Derek Lerner opened a pot pre-flop to 15,000 from the cutoff, with the small blind and big blind Gonzales both calling. All three players checked a highly coordinated flop, {7-Hearts}{5-Diamonds}{8-Hearts}. On the turn {3-Diamonds}, Gonzales led the action with a bet of 22,000 that both other players called. On the river {4-Spades}, Gonzales moved all in, an effective bet of about 120,000 to both Lerner and the small blind. After they folded in turn, Gonzales showed a stone bluff with {q-Spades}{9-Hearts}.
