Over the past year, Season 1 of the North America Poker Tour has held stops at the PokerStars Caribbean Adventure, the Venetian Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, and at the Mohegan Sun Resort and Casino in Uncasville, Connecticut. Today the fourth and final stop of the NAPT Season 1 got underway in Los Angeles at the Bicycle Casino. Anticipation for Day 1a was strong and 328 players turned out for their shot at an NAPT title.
Among the pros that made their way to the Bike were PokerStars Team Pros Barry Greenstein and Greg Raymer; former NAPT winner Vanessa Selbst; November Niners Soi Nguyen and Joseph Cheong; poker couple Annette Obrestad and Scott Montgomery; and the Magician, Antonio Esfandiari. They all came seeking NAPT glory and a nice payday, but unfortunately for them all, they were unable to survive the day.
Not everyone was so unlucky. John “The Razor” Phan got off to a strong start as he quickly rocketed toward the top of the chip counts. In one hand, Phan found himself all in with on a board of while his opponent held . Phan doubled on the hand to become the first player to crack the 100,000 chip mark! Although others eventually caught up to Phan, he managed to survive the day with 101,400.
Others who’ll be returning to Day 2 action are Jason Mercier, William Reynolds, Chad Brown, Justin Bonomo, Chris Klodnicki, Carter King, Alec Torelli, Gavin Griffin, Eric Baldwin and Justin “Boosted J” Smith.
However, all of these players will be chasing Nick Grippo, who appears to be our chip leader with 235,100. Hot on his heels are Scott Fischman (224,600) and Tom Middleton (229,100), both of whom amassed respective stacks.
Approximately 150 players from Day 1a will return for Day 2; however, before we get there we have another opening day to wade through first. Day 1b of the NAPT-Los Angeles is expected to draw another massive field and more of poker’s biggest names. Action is set to kickoff at 1 PM local time, so be sure to check back then as the PokerNews Live Reporting Team brings you all of the latest hands, action, chip counts and eliminations live from the Bike!
We caught up with the action on the river with the board reading . Tom Middleton was all in for 71,900 on the river and Matt Woodward tanked for several long minutes. Eventually, he made the call. Middleton tabled the stone nuts with the for quad threes. He won the pot and saw his stack soar over 200,000 in chips as the day closed out.
Chad Brown opened the pot to 2,500 from the cutoff seat, and Steve Brecher three-bet to 7,000 from the button. In the small blind, Matt Vengrin was thinking sinister thoughts, and he took a look at Brecher's stack before four-betting to 13,000 straight. Brown folded, and Brecher considered for a minute before calling; he had 9,500 left behind.
The flop came out , and Vengrin quickly pushed forward a covering stack of red chips. Brecher considered long and hard before deciding a fold was his best course of action, and he'll forgo the good price and save his 9,500 chips for a better spot.
We didn't catch the action but arrived in time to see the dealer counting down "Downtown" Chad Brown's stack for a double up. Brown had in front of him with a board reading . With that double, Brown is up to 55,000.
Lauren Kling's elimination is complete.
Ravi Raghavan opened to 2,500 in early position, and he found calls from Jonathan Aguiar (button) and Chris Moneymaker (big blind).
Three-handed then, the flop brought and a leading bet from Moneymaker. He made it 3,700 to call and this time only Raghavan matched the bet to see another card.
It was the , and Moneymaker knocked the felt. Raghavan bet 6,700, Moneymaker made a few quiet comments under his breath and folded, and the pot is pushed.
It goes to Raghavan, moving him up right to 100,000. Moneymaker's loss drops him back to a still-just-fine 52,000.
Rep Porter raised to 2,400 from the hijack seat and action folded over to the small blind. The small blind reraised to 6,500 and then Jason Mercier four-bet from the big blind to 13,400. Porter folded and the small blind also folded, giving Mercier the pot and bumping him to 115,000.
