Hellmuth Makes 'Em Squirm

A player in early position limped into the pot, and Phil Hellmuth followed suit a couple seats over. On the button, a middle-aged man announced a raise to 1,625. The original limper called, and action came back to Hellmuth.

"What is going on?" he asked. "I'm so steamed right now, I can't even see straight. I'm gonna raise it up. I'm gonna raise... 13,000." Hellmuth fired out a big chunk of chips with a dejected flick of the wrist. It was just about equal to the button's remaining stack size, and the player there would go deep into the tank as the barrage continued from Hellmuth. "I'm so steamed, I can't even see straight," he repeated.

After another minute or two, the silence broke again. "All that acting I did was so good. God, I'm so steamed right now." Again, a brief pause for a breath. "This poor guy has jacks or queens over here and doesn't know what to do with it. He's just praying I have ace-king."

From across the room, fellow-UB pro Gary "Debo34" DiBernardi came over to see what was going on. "Debo, this is Phil Hellmuth at his best! You see this? Thirteen dimes. I limped in for 200, and now thirteen dimes."

After a very long session in the tank, the button folded, and it was time for the original limper to face the Brat. He asked for a count on Hellmuth's remaining stack before eventually deciding to pass. "I'm gonna lay this down to you sir," said the player, flashing {A-Spades} {K-Spades}.

There would be no show from Hellmuth, and his chest swelled as he raked in the chips and shot from his chair to strut around the table for a minute or two.

Hellmuth Trying to Fly Under the Radar

The player under the gun raised to 550. Phil Hellmuth was next to act and made the call. He said, "I'm glad you raised because if I raise they would know. I'm flying under the radar. You're like a 747 and I'm like a stealth bomber flying in your jet stream, all they see if the 747." said Hellmuth.

The two players took the flop of {Q-Spades} {3-Clubs} {2-Clubs} and the preflop raiser fired out 800. Hellmuth made the call.

The turn brought the {6-Spades} and the first player checked. Hellmuth fired 600 and said, "You might try and check-raise me here." His opponent didn't do so and just called. "I'll only bet 1,200 on the river." said Hellmuth.

The river was the {7-Spades} and action checked to Hellmuth. He bet what he said, 1,200. His opponent called. Hellmuth tabled {7-Clubs} {7-Hearts} for a rivered set and scooped the pot. Hellmuth is now at 33,000.

Dave Goes to Hollywood

We admittedly missed the hand that did him in, but the word on the street is that "Hollywood Dave" Stann has been sent to the rail. In a confrontation with big stack Jon Favaloro, the UltimateBet Team Pro got his money in with pocket tens against pocket kings on a raggy flop. The board bricked out for Stann, and he's been sent off in search of the other half of his hairdo.

Mining for an Ace

After a series of raises and re-raises, William Miner got the rest of his ~11,000 chips into the middle before the flop with {A-Hearts} {K-Clubs}. He would soon be presented with some bad news as his opponent turned over {K-Hearts} {K-Spades}.

The flop contained an ace, but the {A-Diamonds} {K-Diamonds} {8-Clubs} kept the pocket kings in the lead. The turn was the {8-Hearts} to improve the player to kings full, but trouble was afoot. The dealer peeled off the {A-Clubs} on the river, and Miner came rallying from behind to improve to the winning aces full of kings.

With that miraculous double up, Miner has moved his way to about 24,000.

There's a New Big Stack In Town

Gilbert Drolet
Gilbert Drolet
Gilbert Drolet has assumed the pole position here on Day 1a with a chip stack of nearly 80,000. Just recently, Drolet fired a bet of 2,200 on a board of {Q-Diamonds} {9-Hearts} {5-Hearts} {4-Hearts}. His opponent made the call.

The river completed the board with the {10-Spades} and Drolet fired 3,700. His opponent again made the call, only slower this time around. Drolet tabled {J-Clubs} {8-Clubs} for a rivered straight and scooped the pot.

All Hail

"God, I hate this hand," said Phil Hellmuth, looking down at his cards from his position under the gun. "Okay, new Phil limps," he continued, tossing the two black chips into the middle of the table. The player on the button and both blinds would come along with him to create four-way action.

The dealer spread out a flop of {10-Spades} {6-Spades} {7-Spades}, and the two blinds checked. Hellmuth flicked 300 chips into the pot casually, enough to fold the button. The blinds would match the bet, though, and the turn card brought the {3-Hearts}. Hellmuth was allowed to bet once again, 1,000 this time, and the two blinds again called.

The last card off was the {5-Diamonds}, and the small blind checked. The big blind, however, fired out 2,500 at the pot. Hellmuth shot a sideways glance at his opponent before saying, "Raise it up." He tossed 7,000 chips into the middle of the felt, and the small blind quickly folded. The big blind shrugged and smirked, seemingly amused by the spot he was in, and he made the call with {8-Hearts} {9-Diamonds} for the nut straight.

It was no good; Hellmuth tabled {A-Spades} {J-Spades} for the big flush, dragging in his first sizable pot of the day. That moves him up above the chip average to about 24,000.

Maimone's Run Ends Early

FU_15 out the door
FU_15 out the door
Nick "FU_15" Maimone started off the day climbing fast. After hitting a few speed bumps, Maimone was last seen talking to Va Shon Watkins on his way out the door. According to Maimone, he lost a big pot with {K-?} {Q-?} against a player holding {A-?} {9-?} after the board read {9-?} {9-?} {5-?} {K-?} {Q-?}. "It was a nine or nothing hand." said Maimone. "He had the nine and that crippled me."

Maimone went on to say that he got it in with {A-?} {4-?} against two sevens and the sevens held to send him to the rail. "I started off so well it kinda sucks." commented Maimone before leaving the tournament area.
