Day 1b Completed

Day 1b in the Books

Defending champion Matt Brady still in contention
Defending champion Matt Brady still in contention
Five more levels of play today and Day 1b is in the books. The second flight of the 2009 Aruba Poker Classic saw 281 runners take to the felt. That put the total number of entrants at 469, creating a prizepool worth over $2.3 million. After it was all said and done, 156 players made it to the bag-and-tag portion of the night, combining with the 111 remaining players from yesterday to leave 267 players moving on to Day 2.

The newest member to Team UltimateBet, Joe Sebok, didn't last long at all. Busting before the end of the first level, Sebok ran a couple of big hands into bigger ones before hitting the rail. Fellow team members Annie Duke, Billy Kopp and Liv Boeree also failed to make it through the day.

Jeff Madsen was another one of the big names in action, but joined Sebok on the rail before the end of the first level. Madsen ran a flopped set into his opponent's higher set on the turn to make his exit. Other players that will be working on their tan tomorrow rather than building their chip stacks are Layne Flack, Will "The Thrill" Failla, Mark "P0ker H0" Kroon, and Erica Shoenberg.

The action all day was slow and steady. The eliminations didn't come fast and furiouis nor were there too many large confrontations around the room. Defending champion Matt Brady knows all about the slow and steady pace of the event as he wasn't able to get much going all day long. "I'm hanging in there, I'm still alive to repeat." he said.

Team UltimateBet members Tiffany Michelle, Brandon Cantu, Shawn Rice and Michael Binger all made it through to Day 2 while only half of the Absolute Poker team, Matt Vengrin, made it. Lacey Jones was the other half of that team and busted towards the end of the day.

Matt Ross, Casey Kastle and Robbie Cunningham are all making bids to be chip leader coming out of Day 1b. Each could easily challenge Jon Favaloro from Day 1a for pole position going into Day 2. The official chip counts will be posted later on.

All 267 players will be back tomorrow at 12:00pm local time to continue their quest for the $753,330 first-place prize. Be sure to follow all the live updates from PokerNews starting then! We'll see you tomorrow.

Ohhh, SusieQue

Susie Moncek
Susie Moncek
A player in late position opened with a raise to 1,300, and Susie "SusieQue" Moncek came over the top with a three-bet to 3,000 from the button. Next door, small blind Joe Tehan began stacking out chips, and he put out an additional raise to what looked like 9,200. That was enough to fold the original raiser, but SusieQue wasn't going anywhere. With a quiet, "All right," Moncek grabbed all 13,275 of her remaining chips and shoved them forward. Tehan flicked the calling chips off of his stack to put his opponent at risk.

Showdown
Moncek: {J-Clubs} {J-Spades}
Tehan: {A-Diamonds} {K-Diamonds}

The flop came down {9-Clubs} {2-Spades} {3-Hearts}, and Tehan held his arms out as if he was shocked to miss. The turn {2-Diamonds} kept Moncek's jacks in the lead, and the {9-Hearts} that filled out the board secured her a very timely late-day double up.

Bellande Drops a Late Hand

From early position, Jean-Robert Bellande raised to 800. Action folded all the way around to the big blind and he made the call. The flop came down {7-Spades} {2-Spades} {2-Clubs}. The big blind led right away with a bet of 1,225. Bellande called.

The {10-Clubs} hit the turn and the big blind fired 2,200. Bellande called again.

The river was the {J-Hearts} and the big blind fired 3,200. Bellande acted as if he was going to raise by stacking out the 3,200 and then about 10,000 more. He studied his opponent while doing this, but in the end elected to just make the call. The big blind tabled {8-Spades} {8-Diamonds} and Bellande angrily smacked his cards on the felt face down. By losing that pot, Bellande dropped to 26,000.

Na-Na-Nobui

Tara Nobui
Tara Nobui
A player in early position came in with a raise, and Tara Nobui made the call from the small blind.

Heads up, the flop came {8-Spades} {6-Spades} {10-Spades}. Nobui had checked dark, and the raiser continued out with a post-flop bet. She elected to stick in a check-raise, and her opponent made the quick call.

The turn card came the {Q-Hearts}, and Nobui led at the pot with a bet of 5,125. After some deliberation, her opponent moved all in with a similar-sized stack. Nobui would go deep into the tank for several minutes, smirking as if slightly amused by her predicament. Finally, she made the call all in for 23,325 total, turning over {6-Clubs} {6-Diamonds}. It was a good call; her opponent tabled {A-Spades} {Q-Clubs}, still drawing live to his flush outs.

"Pair the board," pleaded Nobui. The dealer didn't pair the board, but the {2-Diamonds} that hit the river was safe for her set. When the stacks were counted down, the losing player was left with just over 1,000 chips, doubling Nobui up over 50,000.

Murry Moves Up

A player in the cutoff opened with a raise to 800, and Mike "WiscoMurry" Murry bumped it up to 2,100. The big blind overcalled, and the cutoff came along with the extra amount to see a three-way flop.

It brought {9-?} {8-?} {6-?}, and the betting passed to Murry. He continued out with a bet of 3,100. The big blind was the only caller this time, and the turn card paired the board with another {9-?}. The two men check-checked it, and the river double-paired the board with another {8-?}. The big blind fired out a bet of 4,000, and Murry insta-called.

The big blind sheepishly tabled {10-?} {J-?}, and Murry proudly tabled {A-?} {K-?} to take the pot with his ace kicker.

By the Numbers

With registration closed for this event, the final numbers have been tallied.

Today's second flight saw another 281 runners take their seats to begin play. Adding that number to the 188 from yesterday gives us a total field size of 469 for the combined Day 1. In addition, there were six no-shows whose entries were added to the prizepool to create a small overlay for those who did show up. As such, the prizepool and payouts are based on 475 players.

The total pool those runners generated adds up to $2,303,750. That money will be split between the 45 final players with the bottom level payout being worth $9,210. Going up from there, the final table of six will all be guaranteed at least $66,801, and the top four spots are all worth six-figure paydays. The lucky man or woman who manages to collect every chip in play will walk away with a handsome check for $753,320.

The full pay structure can be found in the tab on the right side of this page.
