The Youngest Champ In PCA History Is Looking For A Second Title

We're not quite sure what happened to knock him down, but we do know that 2010 PCA Main Event winner Harrison Gimbel is down to about a third of the starting stack.

Although places like Las Vegas require participants to be 21 years old, the law in the Bahamas allows playing at 18, and in 2010 the then-19-year-old from Jupiter, Florida, navigated a field of 1,529 players, which created a $14,831,300 prize pool to win $2.2 million.

Gimbel won a $1,000 satellite the day before the Main Event and managed to parlay that into a $2.2 million payday and become the youngest winner in PCA history.

Frankenberger Moves In

Two-time World Series of Poker bracelet winner Andy Frankenberger was heads up in a pot with Santiago Nadal. The board read {9-Diamonds}{Q-Spades}{9-Spades}{7-Clubs} and Frankenberger bet 6,000 into a pot of about 11,000. Nadal called to see the river and dealer produced the {8-Diamonds} to finish the board.

Frankenberger did not stir in his seat as he sat thinking for about thirty seconds.

"All in," said Frankenberger, who moved the rest of his stack into the center of the table.

Nadal released and Frankenberger picked up the pot, bringing his stack to about 46,000.

Alvarado Probably Has Aces

Lawrence Greenberg checked to JC Alvarado on a flop of {6-Clubs}{8-Clubs}{3-Spades}. Alvarado tossed out 3,500, and Greenberg check-raised to 10,000. Alvarado called.

The turn was the {6-Diamonds}, Greenberg opted to check, and Alvardo moved all in, pushing out a stack of blue T5,000 chips. Greenberg tank-folded.

"Show ace-queen of clubs," Jeff Gross told Alvarado.

Alvarado paused, then mucked.

"I can show an ace," he said.

"Can you show two?" Greenberg asked.

"Probably," Alvarado responded, smiling.

"Queens no good?" Greenberg responded.

Alvarado didn't answer, rather he raked in the pot.

Ladouceur Loses Some

Marc-Andre Ladouceur and an opponent were heads up on a board of {k-Clubs}{a-Spades}{2-Spades}{5-Diamonds}. Ladouceur checked, and his opponent fired 8,000. Ladouceur called.

The river was the {10-Diamonds}, and both players checked. Ladouceur's opponent showed {a-Diamonds}{k-Diamonds}, and the French Canadian mucked his hand.

Minieri Muscles Somerville Again

Earlier in the day we caught a hand where Minieri's constant aggression awarded him a pot against Jason Somerville. When we last came upon the table the two were going head to head in another pot.

The board read {8-Hearts}{j-Hearts}{3-Hearts}{5-Clubs}{6-Clubs} with roughly 4,500 in the pot. Minieri checked to Somerville and he threw out a bet of 4,000. Minieri dipped into his stack and came out with a big raise. Somerville was now facing 16,000 to go. He thought for roughly a minute before finally releasing his hand and awarding the pot to the Italian.

Chip Counts

Sylvia Stacking Some Chips

Jesse James Sylvia, who finished runner-up in the 2012 World Series of Poker Main Event, and an opponent saw a flop off {k-Hearts}{10-Clubs}{8-Clubs}. The player checked, Sylvia tossed out 600, and the player called.

The turn was the {4-Clubs}, the player quickly led out for 2,500, and Sylvia tank-called.

The {5-Hearts} completed the board, and both players knuckled. Sylvia's opponent showed {a-Hearts}{j-Hearts} for ace-high, but Jesse James had that beat with {a-Clubs}{k-Spades}.

Action Players Collide: Minieri vs. Tran

Dario Minieri and Henry Tran are both action players, which is why we stopped by there table to watch them battle it out in a decent-sized pot.

It happened when both put in 5,700 and saw a flop of {K-Diamonds}{4-Spades}{5-Diamonds}. Minieri checked from early position and then called when Tran bet 3,600 from middle position. Minieri proceeded to check-call another bet, this time 4,200, on the {J-Hearts} turn, and then both players checked the {Q-Diamonds} river.

Tran turned over {A-Spades}{J-Diamonds} for a pair of jacks, but it was no good as Minieri revealed {K-Spades}{10-Clubs} for a winning pair of kings. Both players are off to a good start here on Day 1b and well above the starting stack.

Dibella Clawing His Way Back Toward The Starting Stack

It's been a rough start for our defending champ John Dibella, who lost more than half his stack early on. Luckily for him, he seems to have turned things around and is at least headed in the right direction.

In a recent hand, there was 6,000 in the pot and a board reading {9-Spades}{6-Clubs}{3-Hearts}{6-Spades} when Dibella bet 2,500 into Jonathan Plens, who folded his hand. It may seem like a small pot, but it helped push Dibella up to 18K.
