Dong Dips into his Bag of Tricks

Level 3 : 100/200, 0 ante
Gui Dong
Gui Dong

One thing we have noticed about Gui Dong is that he like to play a lot of pots early and seems to thrive off the action. It should come as no surprise then, that the Chinese player has been extremely active and we caught him in action in two big back-to-back hands.

In the first Dong was battling against Vietnam’s Thinh Nguyen Chi when we arrived at the table with the action already at the river and 20,000 already in the pot with the community cards reading {8-Hearts}{a-Diamonds}{8-Clubs} {9-Diamonds} {k-Diamonds}.

Sitting in the big blind Dong was first to act, and with just 15,075 left in his stack, he decided to pull the trigger and move all-in to send Chi deep into the tank, where he remained for several minutes until one of the other players at the table called for the clock.

Chi eventually folded with seconds to spare leaving Dong to rake in the pot and climb to 37,200 while the Vietnamese player dropped to just under 30,000 in chips.

Chi raised the very next hand, making it 500 to go from the cutoff with Hong Kong’s Liu Yueming (cutoff) and the button making the call before Dong was at it again, squeezing to 2,100 from the small blind.

Chi folded immediately but Yueming made the call and after the button also folded the action went heads-up to a flop of {4-Spades}{6-Hearts}{2-Diamonds}, which Dong led for 2,700.

Yueming made the call once more to bring play to the {10-Diamonds} turn, which brought a check from Dong. Yueming reached for chips and bet out 4,500. It appeared that Dong was just playing possum and he swiftly check-raised to 11,500 in total, bring a speedy fold from Yueming who dropped to 20,000 after the hand, while Dong climbed to 47,500.

Wong Wins From Cheong

Level 3 : 100/200, 0 ante

Macau regular Sam Cheong will be a familiar face to many who have played a poker tournament in Macau as he plays nearly every event. Today is no exception and Cheong is in the thick of the action as we arrived at his table, though we are not sure for how much longer after the following hand played out.

We caught the action on the river with the community cards spread {j-Diamonds}{3-Hearts}{7-Spades} {6-Clubs}{5-Diamonds} with over 7,000 already in the middle of the table. Sitting in the big blind Cheong checked the action over to Wong, who slid out a bet of 2,250 to send Cheong into tank mode.

It is difficult to put Cheong on any hand, just because he is happy to make a move if he thinks a player is weak (or he thinks can get away with it) and his range of hands is wide.

Cheong chose to put Wong to the test and check-raised to 13,250 in total and it was Wong’s turn to tank. It was a big call as should he make it and lose Wong would be left with just 8,000 in chips and he thought long and hard before eventually throwing in the call.

Cheong rolled over {a-Hearts}{j-Clubs} for top pair, but this was not enough to beat Wong’s turned two pair and the Hong Kong player flipped over {6-Spades}{3-Spades} to take the pot and a big bite out of Cheong’s stack. Wong climbed to a little over 40,000 in chips while Cheong slumped to a measly 5,300.

Cheung and Wong Battle

Level 2 : 75/150, 0 ante
Sparrow Cheung
Sparrow Cheung

An interesting hand just played out between Hong Kong’s Sparrow Cheung and fellow countryman Charles Wong. It appeared Cheung was the initial aggressor from the cutoff and while we do not know what his initial open was for we do know that Wong had re-raised to 2,000 from the small blind and Cheung had three-bet to 5,400.

Wong chewed over his decision but evidently came to play some poker and threw in the call and it was off to the {8-Clubs}{a-Spades}{2-Diamonds} flop. Keen to re-seize the initiative Wong led for 3,500 and Cheung eyed him up dubiously before sliding out the call.

That slowed Wong down somewhat and he checked the {2-Hearts} turn over to Cheung, who took his time over his decision before electing to bet 6,000. Wong folded fairly quickly and Cheung scooped the 18,000 pot to climb to 44,000 while Wong slipped to 21,300.

Liang Turns Turns Top Two

Level 2 : 75/150, 0 ante

We are now up to 84 entries in the Poker King Cup Macau Main Event Day 1B, with Hong Kong’s Ben Lai and Malaysia’s Raiden Kan just two of the many new arrivals.

Lai seemed eager to get into the action and made it 300 to go from middle position and picked up four callers with China’s Jiakun Liang and Xiaojie Liu making the call from the cutoff and button respectively and both blinds coming along for the ride as well.

The {9-Diamonds}{4-Clubs}{10-Spades} rainbow flop was checked around to Liang, who took a stab for 1,000 with Liu the only caller and the action went heads-up to the {k-Diamonds} turn.

Liang fired again, throwing out a single yellow 1k chip with Liu making the call once more.

The {3-Hearts} looked like a blank and Liang led out for a third time, making it 2,500 to go and Liu made a quick call but threw her hand away quickly when Liang turned over {k-Clubs}{10-Clubs} for top two.

Wong Wins from Dong

Level 1 : 50/100, 0 ante

Action folded around to Gui Dong in the cutoff and he made it 275 to go, only to see Hong Kong’s Yapsen Wong pump it up to 700 from the button.

After both blinds folded out Dong eyed up Wong’s stack – and the latter had evidently not been running all that well initially as he only had 16,000 of the 30,000 start stack left. Dong chose to make the call and it was heads-up to a flop of {5-Clubs}{5-Hearts}{8-Diamonds}.

Dong checked it over to Wong, who quickly tossed out a yellow 1k chip, which was enough to win the hand and he recovered some of his earlier losses to climb to 17,000 while Dong dropped to 29,300.

Jiang and Sun Play Big Early Pot

Level 1 : 50/100, 0 ante
Yunsheng Sun loses a big early pot
Yunsheng Sun loses a big early pot

We are now up to 49 runners with Hong Kong’s Sparrow Cheung another who wants a second chance at making Day 2 after busting near the close of the first starting flight.

Cheung had not long taken his seat before a big pot played out on his table, but the Hong Kong player was just a spectator as Yunsheng Sun and Qifeng Jiang became embroiled in a sizable early pot.

Pre-flop it was Sun who started the ball rolling with an under-the-gun raise to 300, only to see neighbor Jiang re-pop it to 900. The rest of the table got out of the way and Sun made the call to take the action heads-up to a {q-Hearts}{6-Diamonds}{a-Diamonds} flop.

With Sun losing the pre-flop initiative he opted to check the action over to Jiang, who fired for 1,100. Sun made the call and the {9-Clubs} landed on the turn.

This brought a second check from Sun and a slightly larger bet of 2,100 from Jiang, which Sun again called.

The {j-Spades} river saw Sun attempt to get creative as he first checked the action over to Jiang, who loaded up the third barrel and shot out a 3,500 river bet. Sun now chose to check-raise to 12,800 in total to send Jiang deep into the think tank, where he remained for a good minute or so.

Eventually, he decided that he was willing to go all the way and moved the remainder of his chips into the middle of the table for an all-in bet of 25,700.

Sun folded extremely quickly, tapping the table as he did so and dropped down to 10,200 while Jiang stacked up to 51,500.
