Lim Leads Poker King Cup Macau Day 1C, Lee Still Tops Leaderboard

Level 11 : 600/1,200, 200 ante
Poker King Cup Macau Main Event Day 1C chip leader Yah Loon Lim
Poker King Cup Macau Main Event Day 1C chip leader Yah Loon Lim

With a stack of 177,300 in chips, Singapore’s Yah Loon Lim finished at the top of the final starting day’s leaderboard in the Poker King Cup Macau 2017 Main Event at the Poker King Club at Venetian Macau.

However, the man to catch is still Day 1A frontrunner Alex Lee from Singapore, who bagged up a massive 191,500 on the first of the three starting flights.

Day 1C was by far the biggest of the three, with 290 players anteing-up the HK$15,000+$1,500 buy-in though, with the format offering up unlimited re-entry until the start of level nine, some of these were re-entries with Hong Kong’s Nick Wong and China’s Qiang Liu just two of the players who chose to re-enter.

After eleven 40-minute levels, the last of the three starting flights finished just after 9pm local time (GMT+7) with a slew of players falling as the day progressed with Malaysia’s Victor Chong just one of the many casualties, running a flopped straight into the flopped flush of Guanglun Huang.

Another player who fell at the final hurdle was Hong Kong’s Kwok Chun ‘Derx’ Lai whose last gasp shove with pocket sevens ran into the ace-ten of Richard Jin, who paired his ten to end Lai’s Main Event.

The man dominating much of the early action, however, was Bobbie Suri. After a less than stellar Day 1A that saw Suri retire early the Indian player was in the thick of things for the majority of Day 1C, gunning players down left, right and center. In fact, Suri was running so hot he busted the same player twice.

While Suri got off to a slow start he exploded into action midway through the day, sending the unfortunate Qiang Lin to the rail after a pre-flop aces versus kings confrontation – Suri had the aces of course – to climb over the six-figure chip mark and take the chip lead.

Suri cemented this still further after flopping top pair and rivering a gutshot in a huge 100,000-chip pot against APPT 2015 Main Event Champion Tony Cheng to climb to the giddy heights of 210,000. Unfortunately for Suri, he lost a few pots on the last level of the day to drop just below Lim in the pecking order.

Both PokerStars Championship Macau HK$206,000 High Roller Champion Quan Zhou and Danny Kwok took bites out of Suri’s stack before the close of play though he still bagged up a very respectable 161,300.

Other notables to make the cut included Hong Kong's Justin Chan (139,100) and Nick Wong (42,600), Korea's SJ Kim (98,700), the Philippines Flo Campomanes (72,600) and Lester Edoc (51,500), Vietnam's Linh Tran (69,800) and Japan's Kosei Ichinose (38,300).

A total of 139 players survived the Day 1C carnage to lock their Day 2 seat up and will join the 92 Day 1A and Day 1B survivors meaning 231 players will be returning on Wednesday 23 May when Day 2 resumes at 1pm.

The level length will be extended to 60-minutes with play concluding at the end of level 18 and the PokerNews live reporting team will be on hand to bring you all the action as it happens so join us then.

Day 1c Completed

Day 1C in the Books

Level 11 : 600/1,200, 200 ante

The third and final starting flight of the Poker King Cup Macau Main Event is now done and dusted and players are in the midst of bagging up their chips.

At one point it looked like India's Bobbie Suri would be the runaway chip leader as he had 210,000 at the close of level 10, but took a few hits in the last level, finishing the day with 161,300. That means the man who finished the day with the largest stack is Singapore's Yah Loon Lim who bagged up a very respectable 177,300.

Of course, we will be updating the full end of day chip counts and the Day 2 seat draw as soon as we have the official figures, along with the prize pool information and there is still some more last gasp action to report on, which we will be adding shortly, along with a full end of day write up so watch this space.

Lai Falls at Last Hurdle

Kwok Chun ‘Derx’ Lai busted right at the close of the day

We had not seen Kwok Chun ‘Derx’ Lai in action for a while and it seemed his fortune was on the wane since the last time we checked and we arrived at his table just in time for the last hand of the day.

Unfortunately for Lai, it would also prove to be his last hand of the Poker King Cup Main Event. Pre-flop it was Richard Jin who was the man in the driver’s seat, opening the action with a raise to 3,200 from the cutoff. The player on the button made the call and the action folded around to Lai in the small blind.

Down to his last 12,300 Lai moved the last of this into the middle and after thinking it over Jin made the call, as did the player on the button.

Both Jin and the button check down the {10-Spades}{q-Clubs}{k-Spades} {5-Hearts} {k-Clubs} board the whole way and while Lai rolled over {7-Diamonds}{7-Clubs} that was not enough to beat Jin’s {a-Spades}{10-Diamonds} and he scooped the pot, climbed to 150,000 and sent Lai to the rail all in one fell swoop after the other player in the hand mucked. All that excitement concludes the level and the day.

Kwok Doubles Through Suri

Level 11 : 600/1,200, 200 ante

It’s all starting to go wrong for Bobbie Suri this level and the Indian player has just doubled up Danny Kwok. All the chips went in pre-flop with Kwok moving all-in from early position for his last 22,000 with {j-Clubs}{j-Hearts} and with chips to spare Suri made the call with {3-Spades}{3-Clubs}.

The board ran out {k-Clubs}{4-Hearts}{2-Spades} {6-Hearts} {j-Spades} and while he did not need it to win the hand Kwok spiked a set of jacks on the river to lock in the double and climb to 45,000 while Suri dropped to 170,000.

Oh Dear; Xiaoyi Wins Three-way

Level 11 : 600/1,200, 200 ante

The last five hands had not long been announced and we were lurking near Wang Yuexin’s table to see how the former frontrunner had been getting on. Yuexin’s stack had dwindled a little though he still looked to have in the region of 100,000.

We were in the process of just double-checking this when a massive three-way pot played out, though Yuexin was not involved, with all the chips finding their way into the middle pre-flop.

The man to shove first was Xiaoyi He who moved in for a little over 30,000 from the hi-jack only to see Singapore’s Clarence Oh re-shove from the button for 83,000 with a player in the big blind also deciding that the chance for a triple-up was too good to pass up on and he called off his last 25,000 and the cards were turned over.

Big blind: {8-Diamonds}{8-Spades}
Xiaoyi He: {a-Spades}{3-Spades}
Clarence Oh: {q-Clubs}{q-Diamonds}

Xiaoyi had by far the worst of it and Oh looked primed to bust both players with his pocket queens but the {7-Diamonds}{6-Clubs}{9-Hearts} flop gave the big blind a faint glimmer of hope. Oh’s hopes, on the other hand, were quickly dashed with the appearance of the {a-Diamonds} turn card, which gave Xiaoyi the lead.

The big blind was on his feet calling for the straight but the {a-Hearts} hit the river instead to give Xiaoyi trips and the pot. Never underestimate the power of runner, runner…

The big blind headed to the rail, Xiaoyi tripled to 95,000 and Oh took the hit stoically and was left with 53,000 when the dust settled.

Last Five Hands

Level 11 : 600/1,200, 200 ante

The tournament clock has been paused and there will be just five more hands before play concludes for the day.

Zhou Halts Suri Express

Level 11 : 600/1,200, 200 ante
Quan Zhou
Quan Zhou

For a while there it looked like Bobbie Suri was going to run over his table but High Roller Quan Zhou had not long been moved to the same table and he has managed to halt the Suri express, at least for now.

It all started when a player opened the action to 3,000 from middle position with Suri making the call from the cutoff and Zhou coming along for the ride from the big blind.

The flop fell a rainbow {a-Hearts}{6-Diamonds}{k-Clubs} and first to act, Zhou led out for a ½ pot sized bet. While this was enough to fold out the original raiser Suri had other plans and re-raised big.

Zhou thought it over and threw in the extras and it was off to the {4-Clubs} turn. Zhou checked it over to Suri, who checked it back and the dealer slid out the river.

While the {2-Hearts} was an innocuous enough looking card it brought a pot-sized 18,000 bet from Zhou and action was on Suri, who thought it over before thowing in a single black 100 chip to represent the call.

Zhou proudly slapped {k-Spades}{2-Spades} face up on the table to a rather rude exclamation of dismay from Suri who disgustedly threw his cards into the muck.

While Suri had taken a bit of a hit he still has a sizable stack of 188,000 while Zhou now has close to 150,000.

Last Level of the Day

Level 11 : 600/1,200, 200 ante

There are 156 players still in contention out of the 290-strong field and with entry now closed, we have recently been informed that the prize pool is coming in at over HK$7 million, smashing the HK$5 million guarantee. We will update the numbers as soon as we get the official figures.

Play has just entered the last level of the day and unless we lose a lot of players in the next 40-minutes it looks like there will be well over 200 returning Day 2 runners.
