Kun One-Outs Kei, Suri Seizes Lead

Level 7 : 250/500, 50 ante
Wang Kun hits the river hard
Wang Kun hits the river hard

In what is probably one of the worst bad beats we have ever seen, Wang Kun has just made Chan Wing Kei’s day a whole lot worse.

We missed the pre-flop action but came running when a huge roar echoed through the card room and found Kun and Kei both on their feet with their hole cards face up on the table.

With the board reading {k-Diamonds}{5-Hearts}{5-Diamonds} {3-Diamonds} {5-Spades} Kei had pocket kings for the flopped full house, but this is shockingly no good as Kun, holding {a-Diamonds}{5-Clubs}, had just rivered quads.

According to Justin Chan, who is seated at the same table, Kei and Kun became involved in a raising war on the turn with Kei the man to pull the trigger first and four-bet shove all-in with Kun making the call.

Kun had already picked up all his stuff and had packed his bag before the timely arrival of the river and Kei does not look best pleased.

“Sorry,” said Kun sheepishly as he stacked up his newly won chips. The only ray of sunshine for Kei is the fact that Kun did not have him covered but he has taken a big hit and is now down to 16,075 while Kun climbed to 75,000 after that timely catch.

There is also a new chip leader in the house, and India’s Bobbie Suri has usurped Wang Yuexin’s lead and is sitting on a stack of 127,000. According to Suri the majority of these came from Qiang Liu with the two playing a huge pot that turned out to be a bit of a cooler for Liu, who had pocket kings against the pocket aces of Suri. Liu did not survive the encounter but immediately bought back in again and is now playing a brand new stack over on one of the other tournament tables.

Luyckx Takes a Hit, Chan Running Hot

Level 6 : 200/400, 50 ante

We caught Belgium’s Bart Luyckx in action in a three-way hand on the flop with the board reading {j-Spades}{10-Diamonds}{q-Diamonds} just as Luyckx led for 2,500 from middle position into the 5,000 pot.

Malaysia’s Kok Wei, sitting in the hi-jack, made the call and the big blind folded taking the action heads-up to the {7-Hearts} turn. Luyckx slowed down and checked, but Wei showed no such restraint, making it 3,700, which Luyckx called.

The {4-Diamonds} river saw Luyckx check again and Wei fired for 6,000. While he didn’t seem too thrilled about it Luyckx tossed in the call, but could only pitch his cards into the muck when Wei rolled over {a-Hearts}{k-Diamonds} for the flopped Broadway straight. Luyckx dropped to19,300 after that little misadventure while Wei now had 34,700.

Immediately after this, we caught Hong Kong’s Justin Chan embroiled in a pot against another player. The action was on the flop and while we do not know who shoved first both players were all in already with the board reading {6-Spades}{9-Clubs}{6-Hearts}.

Chan had {q-Diamonds}{q-Hearts}, which was leading his opponent’s {7-Diamonds}{8-Diamonds} open-ended straight draw. The {6-Clubs} turn locked up the hand for Chan, giving him an unbeatable full house and his opponent headed for the rail while Chan stacked up to 66,000.

Mistake Proves Profitable for Wu

Level 5 : 150/300, 25 ante

There are some crazy things happening in the Poker King cardroom at present and we have just caught a most amusing hand that played out recently. A player sitting under-the-gun opened the action with a raise to 1,200 and picked up two callers and the action was on the button.

The player in question wished to remain nameless, and we can’t say we blame him after what happened next. The button squeezed to 5,200 in total sending the original raiser deep into the think tank and he did not look thrilled at being re-raised. Eventually, the original raiser let it go, as did one of the callers and the button delightedly flipped over {9-Clubs}{6-Hearts} for a stone cold bluff squeeze.

Unfortunately, however, Chao Wu had yet to act and had not yet folded. The button swore in Cantonese, and Wu declared that he was now all in bringing a speedy fold from the button and Wu won 7,600 just by acting in turn. Priceless.

Huang Busts Wong

Level 5 : 150/300, 25 ante
Nick Wong
Nick Wong

We finally managed to catch one of the early bust outs with Nick Wong departing in one of the most interesting poker hands we have seen in quite some time.

Pre-flop it was Nick Wong who was the instigator, making it 750 to go from middle position, with neighboring Shi Dong Huang making the call along with another player in the cutoff.

This induced the player in the big blind to try a squeeze play and he re-raised to 3,300 in total. A skeptical Wong made the call, only to see Huang reach for raising chips and he three-bet to a sizable 12,050.

This folded out everyone except Wong, who looked extremely puzzled by this turn of events. It looked like it could be a re-steal attempt, what with so much dead money in the pot already, and this is exactly what was going through Wong’s mind as well, and he told us as much after the hand.

Wong eventually decided to go for it and shoved for 20,550 in total and Huang re-checked his cards and thought it over for a few seconds before making the call.

Wong turned over {a-Clubs}{10-Clubs} and Huang did, in fact, have a hand, turning over {k-Clubs}{k-Hearts}.

“Wow!” exclaimed Wong, “I didn’t see that one coming.”

Neither did we, but Huang looked reasonably happy about it all.

“No ace!” pleaded Huang and the dealer obligingly spread the {3-Diamonds}{3-Spades}{q-Spades} flop. That was not the flop Wong was looking for and he was left drawing to the decks three remaining aces. Unfortunately for the Hong Kong player the {5-Clubs} turn and {q-Diamonds} river were of no help and he hit the rail while Huang stacked up to 61,500.

Tang and Yu Tangle

Level 4 : 100/200, 25 ante

Two of the High Rollers, Terry Tian Yuan Tang and Chung Yuan Yu are both seated at the same table and we caught the pair of them in action.

Pre-flop it was Tang who kick-started the action with a raise to 525 from early position and he received no respect whatsoever for this with three players making the call in total, including Chung Yuan Yu (hi-jack) and Zhao Jianpeng (cutoff) to take the action four-way to a flop of {j-Diamonds}{2-Hearts}{k-Clubs}.

With so many customers Tang chose to check, as did the player in middle position before Chung Yuan Yu decided to take a stab for 1,125 with Tang the only caller.

The {4-Diamonds} hit the turn and now Tang sprang into action and led for 2,500. Yu seemed a little taken aback at this strange turn of events and sat back in his chair to think things over. Eventually, he decided to call and it was off to the {10-Diamonds} river, completing the hand and a possible gutshot straight and a backdoor diamond draw.

Tang could well have been worried about some of these hands and chose to check and Yu checked it right back. Tang turned over {k-Diamonds}{k-Hearts} for top set and Yu quickly mucked.
