Chris Moneymaker Bags Big in PokerStars Festival Dublin Main Event Day 1A

Level 12 : 1,000/2,000, 300 ante
Chris Moneymaker

After 12 action-packed levels of poker on Day 1a of the PokerStars Festival Dublin Main Event, 42 players bagged up chips. Yuriy Boyko from Ireland ended as the chip leader finishing the day with a stack of 196,900.

In second place was another Irishman Seamus Cahill with 191,100 and Italian Antonio Merone ended in third with 189,900.

It was a sleepy start to the day as 60 players took their seats at 12 p.m. for cards in the air. The world famous Dublin hospitality, a victory for Celtic in the Champions League the night before and all-night cash games no doubt accounted for a few of the bleary eyes and modest start.

The Main Event soon picked up momentum though as the caffeine kicked in and the numbers steadily swelled to reach 137 total entries.

Team PokerStars Pro Chris Moneymaker gave a well-received “Shuffle up and deal!” at the start of the day but then kept his powder dry until level six when registration closed before taking his seat.

It all looked so easy for Moneymaker as he steadily accumulated chips without ever seeming to put his stack at risk. Indeed it was Moneymaker putting other stacks at risk and he busted a player in one of the last hands of the day to finish near the top of the leaderboard sitting on 179,900.

Many were unable to bag chips in this flight though. Among them was Terry Jordon, who likes to play an aggressive game and is always likely to have a ton of chips or none; today it was the latter. Jordan hit a four on the flop holding seven-four in Level 2. All the chips went in but Jordan’s opponent had aces and held on to bust him.

Andy Black, number one on the Ireland all-time money list, was at the tables bright and early and in fine form, chatting up a storm and building a decent stack towards the middle of the day, but he fell short of bagging up chips.

Belgian poker pro Matthias De Meulder was another of the early risers and was cruising along until he lost a big pot in Level 5 when a river bluff on a paired board was picked off by Mark Buckley holding a baby flush. De Meulder was out later in the same level after losing a flip to Michael Mazilu.

For those who failed to carry chips forward to Day 2, there is a final chance Turbo with a 20-minute clock starting at 9:30 p.m on Friday. That includes those who bust Day 1b, which kicks off at 12 p.m. on Friday.

Day 1b notables are likely to include Team PokerStars Pro Jake Cody, Niall Farrell, Ludovic Geilich, Kelly Saxby as well as seven-time world snooker champion Stephen Hendry and ex-footballers Wayne Bridge and Michael Duberry.

Sean Foley and Andy Black "Chase the Ace"

Level 8 : 400/800, 100 ante
Andy Black

At Andy Black and Sean Foley's table, they were floating the idea of putting €20 into a pot each, and the first person to table an ace when they won a pot (at showdown or elsewhere) would win it. Rory Rees was also interested, but in the end, no consensus was agreed.

In the very next hand, Black and Foley clashed on a {q-Spades}{a-Diamonds}{j-Hearts} with Black check-calling a bet of 2,200 from his opponent.

The turn was the {k-Clubs} and both players checked. Black flung out a 5,000 bet on the {a-Hearts} river and Foley then raised in position to 12,000. Black called.

Foley showed {a-Clubs}{q-Clubs} for a full house and Black bemoaned being "pipped" and showed {a-Spades}{j-Spades}.

"So we would have chopped the €20," said Foley and Black laughed.

"You would have been the only player to lose money," remarked Black, pointing towards Rees at the far end of the table.

Chris Moneymaker's First Orbit

Level 6 : 250/500, 75 ante
Chris Moneymaker
Chris Moneymaker

Chris Moneymaker eventually found his way to his seat here on Day 1A of the Main Event and sat at a friendly table. The 2003 WSOP Main Event champion was warmly received, including by several players who said that they remembered following along all those years ago.

We stuck around to see how his first orbit went.

Hand 1 (HJ): The player in middle position raised to 1,200 and Chris Moneymaker called in the hijack. The button, small blind and big blind called too and the flop came {7-Hearts}{a-Spades}{3-Hearts}. It checked to the initial raiser who bet 2,300 and Moneymaker folded.

Hand 2 (MP): Moneymaker open-folded.

Hand 3 (EP): Moneymaker open-folded.

Hand 4 (UTG): Moneymaker raised to 1,200 from under the gun. The small blind and big blind called. The flop came {3-Diamonds}{10-Hearts}{4-Diamonds}. It checked to Moneymaker who bet 1,700. The small blind called and the big blind folded.

The turn was the {9-Clubs}. The small blind checked, and folded when Moneymaker bet 3,000.

Hand 5 (BB): A player in early position raised to 1,700. The cutoff three-bet to 4,000 and Moneymaker folded.

Hand 6 (SB): The button raised to 1,100 and Moneymaker folded his small blind.

Hand 7 (BTN): A player raised to 1,500 from under the gun and Moneymaker folded.

Hand 8 (CO): The hijack raised to 1,100 and Moneymaker three-bet to 2,700 from the cutoff and the initial raiser folded.

Matthias De Meulder Eliminated

Level 5 : 200/400, 50 ante
Matthias De Meulder
Matthias De Meulder

Matthias De Meulder moved all in from under the gun for not a whole lot and Michael Mazilu raised to 15,000 to isolate. With no other interested parties, the cards were on their backs.

De Meulder: {q-Diamonds}{j-Diamonds}
Mazilu: {10-Spades}{10-Hearts}

The board ran out {3-Clubs}{8-Diamonds}{4-Clubs}{6-Clubs}{6-Hearts}.

Mazilu's pair of tens held to bust De Meulder who can play the Day 1c event as his last Main Event chance.

Early Action With Terry Jordon

Level 1 : 50/100, 0 ante
Terry Jordon
Terry Jordon

Terry Jordon is one of the more well-known faces sat at the tables so far. He has a reputation for an ultra-aggressive style that sees him taking a lot of flops and putting pressure on his opponents. More often than not, this leads to Jordon accumulating a large stack early on or an early exit.

In an early hand though, Jordon displayed a more cautious approach.

Greame Evans opened for 250 and picked up a call from Gastao Teixeira on the button with Jordon defending his big blind.

The flop was {10-Diamonds}{8-Hearts}{7-Diamonds} and Teixeira bet 700 when it was checked to him. Jordon threw his cards in but Evans called.

They both checked the {6-Clubs} turn and {7-Hearts} river where Teixeira showed the winning {q-Hearts}{10-Hearts}.

A while later Edvinas Gruzdas opened for 350 and Jordon called from the button this time with the big blind making it three ways to a flop of {8-Diamonds}{j-Clubs}{9-Hearts}.

Gruzdas continued for 700 and Jordon called. The turn was the {7-Diamonds} and a check from Gruzdas saw a bet of 1,725 from Jordon.

Gruzdas let his hand go and Jordon showed his {4-Clubs}.

“Ten four,” was Gruzdas’ guess.

We'd like to extend a warm welcome to our coverage of the PokerStars Festival Dublin Main Event. Today is the first of three starting flights of the Main Event, which comes with a generous €700,000 guarantee.

This year's festival is already off to a rip-roaring start with the PokerStars Megastack, a €50,000 guarantee for just a €170 buy-in attracting 465 players, smashing the guarantee by almost €20,000. The organisers will have high hopes then for the rest of the festival as well as the PSF Main Event.

There are a total of three starting flights for the Main Event. Day 1A and 1B start today and tomorrow at 12:00 local time, while the third and final starting flight commences at 21:30 on Friday, September 29th. This flight will be a special turbo flight available for re-entering players only, where the levels are reduced to 20 minutes in length as opposed to 45 minutes in Day 1A and 1B. Levels increase to 60 minutes in length for Day 2 onwards.

Players receive 30,000 in chips for their buy-in and there will be 12 levels of play on Day 1s, with Day 1A and 1B scheduled to finish at around 21:45 each day.
