David Simard Chip Leads Day 1a

Day 1a of Event #1: $400 Mystery Bounty has ended here at the 2023 Potomac Winter Open with David Simard leading the charge after bagging 663,000 in chips. Not far behind him is Frankie Greever, who bagged up 589,000 for Day 2.

Simard managed to steadily increase his chip stack throughout the day before scooping a huge pot against Christian Taylor with a dominating flush draw. From that point, Simard held the tournament chip lead and didn't appear to give it back for the duration of Day 1a.

Play began with 87 entrants and by the time late registration ended, that number had swelled to 278. Action was fast, however, and that number dwindled to 28 (the bubble) by level 16. Among the casualties who didn't make the money was the defending champion from 2020, Yaser Al-Keliddar, who busted after getting all in with pocket jacks against Chris Quintanilla's pocket aces and failing to improve.

The bubble burst after two players got eliminated at two different tables, which meant that they would split a $500 min-cash between them.

From that point on, it didn't take long for an additional five players to bust to end play for the night. Arthur Nalls bubbled Day 2 after getting all in with ace-three against Yamil Saenz's ace-ten and failing to improve.

The remaining 22 players from Day 1a will join the other survivors of the upcoming Day-1 flights for Day 2 on Sunday, January 29 at noon. Pokernews will cover Day 1b next at 5 p.m. on Thursday, January 26, so be sure to tune in for all the action as Event #1: $400 Mystery Bounty continues.

Saenz Busts Nalls to End Play For The Night

Level 17 : Blinds 5,000/10,000, 10,000 ante
Yamil Saenz
Yamil Saenz

Charles Parrish limped under-the-gun and action folded to Yamil Saenz in the cutoff, who raised to 30,000. Arthur Nall then shoved for his last 115,000 from the big blind and it was folded back to Saenz, who called.

Arthur Nalls: {a-Diamonds}{3-Diamonds}
Yamil Saenz: {a-Hearts}{10-Hearts}

The board ran out {q-Spades}{9-Clubs}{8-Spades}{6-Spades}{a-Clubs} — leaving Sanez best with a pair of aces and a ten kicker to knock Nalls out.

Parrish Doubles

Level 17 : Blinds 5,000/10,000, 10,000 ante

On a flop of {9-Clubs}{7-Diamonds}{j-Hearts}, the player in the hijack checked to Charles Parrish on the button, who bet 55,000. His opponent then announced he was all-in and Parrish called off the rest of his stack, which was about 200,000.

Hijack: {q-Clubs}{10-Spades}
Charles Parrish: {k-Spades}{j-Clubs}

Parish was ahead with a pair of jacks against the open-ended straight draw of his opponent. The {10-Diamonds} turn and {q-Diamonds} river improved the hijack to two pair but also improved Parrish to a superior straight and he doubled through.

Thomas Cheung shoved under-the-gun for a bit over 100,000 and action folded around to Brandon Frazier in the big blind, who peeled his cards one by one. The first card was the {a-Clubs} and Frazier immediately announced, "call," once he saw his other card was the {a-Hearts} for pocket aces.

Thomas Cheung: {k-Clubs}{q-Spades}
Brandon Frazier: {a-Clubs}{a-Hearts}

The board ran out {j-Spades}{9-Hearts}{2-Hearts}{7-Hearts}{4-Clubs} and Cheung was sent to collect a $500 min-cash.

Tyler Kelley was also eliminated at another table and collected $500.

Parrish and Perkins Burst The Bubble in Tandem

Level 16 : Blinds 4,000/8,000, 8,000 ante

Charles Parrish had one player all-in preflop one table and Thomas Perkins had another player all-in preflop on another.

Parish held {7-Clubs}{7-Diamonds} against his opponent's {a-Spades}{k-Spades} and the board ran out {9-Clubs}{10-Clubs}{5-Clubs}{9-Diamonds}{8-Diamonds} — leaving Parrish best with two pair.

Meanwhile, Perkins held {a-Clubs}{k-Diamonds} against his all-in opponent's {k-Hearts}{q-Diamonds}. The {8-Clubs}{10-Clubs}{10-Spades}{9-Spades}{3-Diamonds} runout kept Perkins' ace-high best.

Since both players were knocked out on different tables, they will split the $500 min-cash.
