Jefferson's Big Slick Does the Trick

Level 6 : 300/600, 600 ante

A player raised to 1,500 from under the gun, and William Jefferson called in middle position. The player next to act three-bet to 4,400, and only Jefferson called.

Jefferson checked the {9-Hearts}{k-Clubs}{k-Spades} flop to his opponent, who bet 5,000. Jefferson quickly check-raised all in for 11,900, and Jefferson's opponent thought briefly before sticking in a call.

William Jefferson: {a-Hearts}{k-Diamonds}
Opponent: {6-Hearts}{6-Spades}

Jefferson faded the two-outer on the {10-Clubs} turn and {5-Diamonds} river to secure the double.

A series of preliminary events have been taking place in the Horseshoe Council Bluffs poker room leading up to this weekend's $575 Main Event, and PokerNews is sharing brief recaps of the week's action.

During February 2020's RunGood Poker Series stop here in Council Bluffs, 272 entrants took part in the $185 DeepStack NLH Ring Event. In what may be a sign of things to come in this weekend's $575 Main Event, the field more than doubled from last year's event, as a whopping 614 entrants hit the felt over two flights, building up an $89,030 prize pool (more than quadrupling the $20,000 guarantee) that went to the top 63 players.

Two players managed to walk away with a five-figure score for their two days of play, as Brent Harrington earned $11,564 for his runner-up performance. The eventual winner, Craig Dick, earned a staggering $18,704 for his efforts, along with an All-Stars Ring and 25 points for the Casino Championship.

The Battle of Minnesotans

Level 6 : 300/600, 600 ante
Jonathan Kim
Jonathan Kim

A short-stacked Jonathan Kim was all in and at risk in the big blind against Meng Veng in early position.

Jonathan Kim: {5-Diamonds}{4-Diamonds}
Meng Vang: {a-Spades}{j-Spades}

Kim was drawing dead by the turn of a {6-Hearts}{a-Clubs}{10-Spades}{10-Hearts}{9-Spades} runout, and was eliminated.

"Many more battles to come," Vang told Kim, who responded with "I'll see you tomorrow; actually, I'll see you Sunday!"

Gerleman's "Livin' the Dream"

Level 6 : 300/600, 600 ante

A quick pass around the room saw an impressive stack being built up by Iowa's Duane Gerleman, and when asked how he had amassed such an impressive stack, he deadpanned, "I won some hands."

He then went on to explain that he won a series of hands, first with aces, then with kings, and finally with a backdoored flush, that built up his stack to its current substantial height.

"The Donkey Slayer", as table-mate Kevin Berthelsen proclaimed Gerleman to be, is no stranger to poker success, with over $380,000 in Hendon Mob reported tournament earnings. We'll keep an eye on Gerleman and see if he continues "Livin' the dream," as another tablemate said, to which Gerleman responded with a grin.

Lowery Punishes the Limpers

Level 5 : 200/400, 400 ante
Daniel Lowery
Daniel Lowery

Four players limped in to the pot, and Daniel Lowery chose to exercise his option in the big blind, raising to 2,400. A player in middle position and the hijack both called, while everyone else folded.

Lowery bet 3,600 on a {j-Diamonds}{q-Clubs}{8-Hearts} flop, and only the middle-position player called.

Both players checked down the {6-Spades} turn and {k-Diamonds} river, and the middle-position player said, "I just have an eight," tabling {8-Spades}{7-Clubs}. Lowery rolled over {a-Spades}{q-Hearts} for top pair, top kicker, and took down the pot.

Bacome's Aces Fade a Monster Draw

Level 5 : 200/400, 400 ante

A player raised to 1,200 from the hijack, and Adam Bacome three-bet to 3,300 from the small blind. The hijack called.

Bacome jammed for his last 5,700 on the {q-Spades}{5-Spades}{10-Hearts} flop, and the hijack called.

Adam Bacome: {a-Spades}{a-Hearts}
Opponent: {j-Spades}{9-Spades}

Bacome's aces had to fade the straight and flush draws of the hijack, and a {4-Diamonds}, {9-Clubs} runout kept Bacome's aces in front for the double.
