Day 1b of the 2019 Mid-States Poker Tour (MSPT) Michigan State Poker Championship at FireKeepers Casino has wrapped up. Today’s field saw 596 entrants which is a MSPT Firekeeper's record for a Day 1b flight. This brings the overall total to 918 with one starting day still remaining. 72 players found a bag today and they will join the 36 players who bagged on Day 1a.

Duston Newton was able to bag the biggest stack of the day and will take 448,000 chips into Day 2 on Sunday. Jeffrey Banghart (435,000), Lenard Pisano II (384,500), Mike Shanahan (371,500) and Perla Ojeda (364,500) complete the top five list for Day 1b.

Some other notables that put chips in the bag today include Ben Keeline (346,500), Nick Pupillo (287,500), Ralph Massey (187,500), Chris Moon (151,000), Blake Bohn (146,500), Tony Sinishtaj (117,500) and Aaron Johnson (85,500).

Some notables that were in action today but failed to find a bag include Maurice Hawkins, Eric Stocz, Aaron Massey, Tom Hammers, Irene Carey and Dan Heimiller. We can expect to see these players and many more back tomorrow to try again on Day 1c.

After the action wraps up tomorrow all of the Day 2 players will be known and the payouts will be posted. Last year's winner of this event, Matt Stammen took home $218,565 but that number is expected to be much larger this year. Stammen was seen in the field today but will have to try again tomorrow if he wants to make a run at defending his title.

Day 1c is anticipated to be the largest of the starting days and will be the last chance players have to get a seat on Day 2. The action will get underway tomorrow at 12:00 p.m. local time.

Four More Hands

Level 15 : 2,000/4,000, 4,000 ante

The tournament staff just announced the remaining players will play four more hands before bagging and tagging on Day 1b. Stay tuned for a list of survivors with chip counts as well as a recap of today's action.

Lucky Sevens for Nickle

Level 15 : 2,000/4,000, 4,000 ante
Sheila Nickle
Sheila Nickle

After a player raised to 10,000 from middle position, Sheila Nickle three-bet all in for 59,000 from the hijack. The player in the big blind thought for over a minute before making the call and the original raiser got out of the way.

Sheila Nickle: {7-Clubs}{7-Hearts}
Big Blind: {a-Diamonds}{q-Hearts}

It was a flip and while the {9-Diamonds}{7-Diamonds}{2-Diamonds} flop gave Nickle a set it also gave her opponent the nut flush draw. Fortunately for Nickle, neither the {10-Hearts} turn nor {6-Hearts} river were the dangerous diamond and Nickle doubled through.

Keeline Wins Battle of the Blinds

Level 15 : 2,000/4,000, 4,000 ante
Ben Keeline
Ben Keeline

Action folded around to the small blind who moved in for his last 55,000. Ben Keeline was in the big blind and made the call.

Ben Keeline: {a-Hearts}{4-Hearts}
Opponent: {k-Spades}{10-Spades}

The {j-Hearts}{3-Clubs}{6-Diamonds} flop was a clean one for Keeline. The {6-Hearts} on the turn killed some of his opponents outs and the {a-Spades} on the river sealed it. Keeline added his opponents stack to his own which now totals 350,000.

Koch Fades the Spades to Double

Level 14 : 1,500/3,000, 3,000 ante
Erik Koch
Erik Koch

Erik Koch raised to 6,000 under the gun and the player on the button called. MSPT Season 8 Player of the Year Chris Meyers came along from the big and the trio saw a flop of {3-Clubs}{a-Spades}{q-Spades}.

Meyers checked, Koch continued for 6,500, and the button raised to 16,500. Meyers got out of the way and Koch jammed for 76,000. The button called and the hands were turned up.

Erik Koch: {a-Diamonds}{j-Hearts}
Button: {9-Spades}{8-Spades}

Koch was ahead with top pair but his opponent had the spade flush draw. The {9-Diamonds} turn gave the player on the button even more outs, but he missed when the {10-Diamonds} bricked the river. Ship the double to Koch.

Shanahan Among The Chip Leaders

Level 14 : 1,500/3,000, 3,000 ante
Mike Shanahan
Mike Shanahan

Mike Shanahan raised his button to 8,000 and the small blind moved all in for 82,000. Shanahan gave it some thought and eventually put in the chips to call.

Mike Shanahan: {9-Clubs}{9-Spades}
Opponent: {a-Clubs}{9-Hearts}

The {k-Diamonds}{k-Hearts}{q-Spades} flop left Shanahan needing to dodge some counterfeit outs. The board bricked out {2-Hearts} and {6-Hearts} to send Shanahan the pot. He now sits with around 400,000 chips.

Nines Hold for Garrod

Level 14 : 1,500/3,000, 3,000 ante

After three players limped, Mark Garrod moved all in for 39,000 from the big blind. Two of the limpers folded while the third thought for a bit before making the call.

Mark Garrod: {9-Diamonds}{9-Spades}
Opponent: {k-Clubs}{j-Diamonds}

It was a flip and Garrod was looking to hold to ship the double. The {a-Diamonds}{a-Hearts}{q-Hearts} flop gave his opponent both straight and counterfeit outs, but fortunately for Garrod the turn and river came the safe {4-Diamonds} and {2-Clubs} respectively.
