While PokerNews is here offering live updates for the $1,100 Main Event, we’d be remiss if we didn’t tell you about some of the side events that have taken place out over the past week for the Winter Poker Classic here at Running Aces Casino.

In Event #1: $360 NLH Mystery Bounty, 1,065 runners created a $318,000 prize pool that was paid out to the top 115 players.

Among those to cash but fall short of the final table were MSPT Hall of Famer Josh Reichard (11th - $2,969), Nik Stone (16th - $2,081), MSPT Hall of Famer Rob Wazwaz (26th - $1,214), Dan Bekavac (31st - $918), and DJ Buckley (39th - $707).

In the end, it was David Gonia who collected every chip in play to capture the MSPT Winter Poker Classic Trophy, along with a $38,606 payday plus bounties.

Alexander Wins with Aggression

Level 2 : Blinds 100/200, 200 ante
Matt Alexander
Matt Alexander

The player under the gun raised to 500 and only Matt Alexander called from late position to see a {2-Spades}{5-Hearts}{10-Spades} flop.

The initial raiser continued for 500 only to call a 1,500 raise from Alexander.

Once the {6-Clubs} hit the turn, Alexander's opponent check-called a 2,500 bet only to check-fold for 6,000 after the {7-Hearts} completed the board on the river.

Hancock Cracks Havlish's Cowboys

Level 1 : Blinds 100/100, 100 ante
Mike Hancock

There was all in action after a {9-Clubs}{6-Spades}{q-Clubs} flop between Max Havlish from the button and Mike Hancock from the big blind.

Max Havlish: {k-Spades}{k-Clubs}
Mike Hancock: {k-Diamonds}{q-Diamonds}

Hancock was trailing the pocket kings of Havlish until the dealer peeled the {q-Hearts} on the turn giving him trips.

Havlish needed the case king on the river to stay alive but the {5-Hearts} completed the board and he made his way over to the re-buy counter.
