Clash of Generations at Day 1a of Unibet Open London

Level 10 : 1,000/2,000, 300 ante
Viktor Blom Failed To Advance To Day 2
Viktor Blom Failed To Advance To Day 2

Day 1a of the Unibet Open London 2017 Main Event is on the books. A total of 154 players showed up for the first starting day of the tour's first stop of its the 10th season. At the end of the day, hometown player Giulio Mascolo bagged the overnight chip lead with 327,600.

Mascolo leads a star-studded pack of 41 survivors, which includes two-time Unibet Open winner Mateusz Moolhuizen, 2016 Unibet Open Malta winner Martin Soukup and Belgian Unibet Ambassador Charlotte Van Brabander.

It was a clash of generations, between old-and-new-school poker players, as players from all ages and nationalities showed up to contest for the coveted title. Poker legends such as Willie "The Dice Man" Tann, Chris Bjorin, Joe Beevers and Sir Ben Roberts duked it out with the younger generation of stars, headlined by none other than Swedish phenom Viktor "Isildur1" Blom. All these players had one thing in common: They failed to advance to Day 2 and will not lift the trophy on Sunday night.

Reigning champion Dave Shallow's title defense came to an abrupt end in the early stages. Shallow suffered a bad beat with pocket kings against the pocket queens of [Removed:158] when the dreaded queen fell on the river. It wasn't the only former winner eliminated by Van Lancker, as Unibet Open 2016 Copenhagen winner Joni Liimatta also fell to the Belgian. Van Lancker ended the day with 305,800 in chips and sits in second place when Day 2 gets underway.

Zoltan Barabas was a long-time chip leader and looked unstoppable for most of the day. After the dinner break, a big hand with pocket jacks against Mascolo's pocket aces went awry and dropped Barabas down the leaderboard. With Barabas' chips, Mascolo found himself on track to the eventual end-of-day chip lead.

Two-time winner Mateusz Moolhuizen didn't have the best seating draw and had to battle with Soukop, Adrien Allain, Tamer Kamel and Sylvain Loosli for the majority of the day. Moolhuizen eventually emerged on top and finished the day with 176,000 in chips.

Unibet Ambassador Charlotte Van Brabander, who defeated Blom heads up yesterday to claim her third successive Ambassadors Battle Royale victory, also made her way to Day 2. Van Brabander was often seen on the feature table and ended up bagging 76,000 in chips.

Day 1b will start tomorrow at 11:00 a.m. local time, which again will feature 10 levels of 60 minutes each. On Saturday, the field will be combined and all players will return at noon.

The new winner of the Unibet Open 2017 London will be crowned on Sunday night. PokerNews will be on the floor throughout the weekend to provide live action of all the excitement in The Poker Room of the legendary Grosvenor Casino in London.

Mateusz Moolhuizen raised to 3,500 from the hijack. On the button, Tamer Kamel three-bet to 10,200 and Moolhuizen called. Both players checked the {A-Clubs}{9-Spades}{J-Clubs} flop. Moolhuizen fired 15,500 on the {5-Clubs} turn and Kamel called.

The river brought the {4-Hearts} and Moolhuizen seized out a bet of 27,000. Kamel called again, only to see Moolhuizen turn over {A-Hearts}{5-Hearts} for two pair. The Brit couldn't beat that and slipped to just 13,000 in the process.

Moolhuizen is now up to 180,000.

Mascolo Crushes Barabas in Big Clash

Level 8 : 600/1,200, 200 ante
Giulio Mascolo
Giulio Mascolo

Zoltan Barabas opened with a raise to 3,000 from under the gun. Giulio Mascolo called in middle position and action got folded to the big blind. The big blind moved all in for 36,000 and Barabas made the call after a minute of thought.

Back on Mascolo, the Brit spent nearly three minutes in the tank before shoving all in for 115,700 total. It was almost 80,000 more to call for Barabas, but the Hungarian called without hesitation to create the biggest pot of the tournament so far.

Giulio Mascolo: {A-Hearts}{A-Diamonds}
Zoltan Barabas: {J-Clubs}{J-Hearts}
Big Blind: {A-Spades}{K-Diamonds}

It was a dream scenario for Mascolo and his aces held up after the board ran out {Q-Hearts}{9-Spades}{7-Diamonds}{3-Hearts}{10-Diamonds}. The big blind was eliminated, while Barabas had to ship nearly two-thirds of his stack over to Mascolo.

Viktor Blom Eliminated

Level 6 : 400/800, 100 ante
Viktor Blom
Viktor Blom

The rare sight of Viktor "Isildur1" Blom playing in a poker tournament is over. The Swedish high-stakes cash game never gained any traction and saw his stack slowly dwindling down throughout the day.

In Blom's final hand, Nicolas Renee opened to 1,700 on the button. Down to his last 13,000, Viktor Blom looked down at pocket jacks in the small blind and pushed all in. The player in the big blind cold-called the shove, as did Renee.

On an {A-}{6-}{4-} flop containing two diamonds, the big blind bet 7,000 and Renee called. Both players checked the {K-Diamonds} on the turn. On the {9-Clubs} river, the big blind checked, Renee bet 20,000 and the big blind called.

Renee showed {6-}{6-} for a set of sixes and the winner. The big blind mucked {A-}{Q-}, Blom mucked his jacks and quickly headed out of the tournament area.

Barabas Takes A Big Lead

Level 5 : 300/600, 75 ante
Zoltan Barabas (right)
Zoltan Barabas (right)

Over at table 13, Hungary's Zoltan Barabas is sitting behind a very impressive stack of 165,000. While sipping on a glass of Chardonnay, Barabas talked us through two big hands that skyrocketed him to the top of the standings.

In the first hand, Barabas opened with the optional {J-Diamonds}{6-Diamonds} from under the gun. A player to his left called and the flop came down {K-}{6-}{X-}. Barabas bet and his opponent called.

The {6-} on the turn gave Barabas trip sixes and he bet 4,000. His opponent raised to 11,000 and Barabas called. The {J-} on the river completed the Hungarian's full house, and he check-called an all-in shove. His opponent couldn't muster up more than a king and was eliminated.

In the second hand, Barabas raised on the button with {A-Diamonds}{J-Diamonds} and a player defended his big blind. The flop came down {K-Diamonds}{Q-Diamonds}{J-} and the big blind led out 1,000. Barabas raised to 3,300, the big blind shoved for 25,000 and Barabas called.

The big blind showed {10-Diamonds}{9-Diamonds} for the flopped straight, but the turn was a diamond to seal another big pot for the Hungarian.

Viktor Blom Enters

Level 4 : 200/400, 50 ante
Viktor Blom
Viktor Blom

Swedish ultra high-stakes phenom Viktor "Isildur1" Blom has taken his seat. The Swede is known for his enigmatic playing style and is frequently seen in the highest cash games the world has to offer. In tournaments, however, "Isildur1" is a rare sight these days. His last official cash dates back to 2014 when he finished second in a €10,000 No Limit Hold'em Turbo in Monaco, cashing €129,650.

Last night, the Swedish prodigy finished second in the Unibet Ambassadors Battle Royale, being ousted by Charlotte van Brabander heads-up. Blom earned £3,000 for his troubles, which should cover a few big blinds in his regular game.

Blom is currently sitting on a stack of 25,000.

Two-Outer Topples Shallow

Level 3 : 150/300, 25 ante
Dave Shallow, Winner of Unibet Open London 2016
Dave Shallow, Winner of Unibet Open London 2016

Last year, Dave Shallow conquered a 418-player field and stood tall at the end of Unibet Open London 2016. The Brit took home £62,000 ($86,747) for his accomplishment but failed to cash in a live tournament ever since.

Today, Shallow was forced to the rail in the early stages, after suffering a rather brutal beat at the hands of [Removed:158]. After a raising war preflop, Shallow five-bet shoved and Van Lancker tank-called it off for 26,000 effectively.

Dave Shallow: {K-Clubs}{K-Hearts}
[Removed:158]: {Q-Hearts}{Q-Clubs}

The {6-Hearts}{2-Clubs}{2-Hearts} flop was innocuous, as was the {10-Spades} on the turn. The {Q-Diamonds} on the river changed it all, improving Van Lancker to queens full and ending Shallow's tournament life on the spot.

"Cheers, good luck guys", Shallow said while making his exit. With Shallow's bustout, a new winner in London will be crowned on Sunday night.

Tricky Searchdog Doubles Up

Level 4 : 200/400, 50 ante
Hans de Hond
Hans de Hond

Hans "Searchdog" de Hond, who's playing his fourteenth Unibet Open event, just proved that old dogs don't lose their tricks so easily. On a {J-Diamonds}{8-Diamonds}{2-Hearts} flop, De Hond held {8-Spades}{7-Diamonds} for middle pair and check-raised a bet from his opponent, who called.

The turn brought the {7-Clubs}, giving De Hond two pair, and the Dutchman now opted to check. His opponent fired out 9,000, De Hond check-raised to 20,000, his opponent went all in for slightly more than that and De Hond called off his few remaining chips.

De Hond's opponent held {Q-Hearts}{J-Clubs} for a pair of jacks and didn't improve on the {4-Hearts} river. The Dutchman scored a full double-up and currently sits at 52,000.

Life In Plastic Isn't Always Fantastic

Level 2 : 100/200, 25 ante
Aqua
Aqua

René Dif has become the first casualty of the Unibet Open London. Dif gained prominence as the lead singer of the Danish band Aqua, famous for their monster hit "Barbie Girl". Jumping straight from the aquarium to make a splash on the green felt didn't exactly go as planned, though.

According to his (former) table mate Gerrit Van Lancker, a player bet 300 on a {K-Spades}{J-Spades}{5-Hearts} flop. Dif made it 10,000 to go, the initial better went all in for 30,000 and Dif called it off.

Dif held {A-}{Q-} for just ace-high and his opponent tabled {J-}{J-} for a set of jacks. Neither turn nor river was a ten, giving Dif plenty of time to party with Barbie.
