Vaaraniemi Jams Into Segers

Level 3 : 150/300, 25 ante

In a four-bet pot, Elias Vaaraniemi raised it up to 6,100 out of the big blind and just Gilles Segers called to create a pot of 16,000. The flop fell {Q-Hearts}{J-Clubs}{10-Clubs} and Vaaraniemi almost immediately moved all in, which put Segers to the test with some 25,000 behind.

Segers took off his sunglasses and stared at the board, then his opponent, and sent his cards into the muck to forfeit the pot. Vaaraniemi has really bumped up the aggression as of lately and is slowly but surely taking over control.

Next Side Event Update

Level 3 : 150/300, 25 ante
Dara O'Kearney
Dara O'Kearney

The €2,200 High Roller is down to the last nine players out of 27 entries and the top five spots will receive a portion of the €54,000 prize pool, the min cash is worth €5,050 and the winner can look forward to a payday of €20,690. No longer in contention for the cash prizes is Unibet Poker ambassador Dara O'Kearney, who started the day as the chip leader and "didn't win a single pot at all."

Among the notables still left are Seamus Cahill, Benny Glaser, UnibetPoker.fr ambassador Alexandre Reard, Kevin Kileen, as well as Michael Mazilu and Jack Sinclair. Mazilu and Sinclair busted early into the day and re-entered subsequently to take another shot at the High Roller title.

The €330 Deep Stack Open Cup is down to the last 13 players and yet another Unibet Poker ambassador fell short of glory. Former esports player turned poker professional Frederik Bergmann took home €660 for his efforts and will be playing on Day 1b of the €1,100 Unibet Open Dublin Main Event. Mihai Manole, John Keown, Dennis Kleinleugemors and Michael Farrelly are still in contention.

More for Niskanen and Vaaraniemi

Level 3 : 150/300, 25 ante

Raul Olarescu raised to 650 in the cutoff and Tuomo Niskanen three-bet to 2,000 from one seat over on the button, which Olarescu called. The flop came {K-Clubs}{J-Diamonds}{10-Clubs} and Olarescu checked, which triggered a successful continuation bet of 1,800 by Niskanen.

One table over, Alexandru Strugut raised to 750 and picked up no fewer than four callers including Elias Vaaraniemi in the small blind. The five players checked the {A-Spades}{10-Hearts}{3-Diamonds} flop and Vaaraniemi also checked the {A-Diamonds} turn. Strugut bet 500 and was called by Kalman Dohany. Markus Lehtinen raised to 2,000 on the button and Vaaraniemi then check-raised to 6,400 after carefully counting out the chips to do so. What followed was a buzz killer, as all opponents sent their cards into the muck to award the pot to Vaaraniemi.

Wals Takes From Brunnberg

Level 3 : 150/300, 25 ante

Until the river of a board {9-Hearts}{5-Clubs}{2-Hearts}{8-Spades}{K-Spades}, a pot of 9,000 had emerged and Harry Wals bet 4,400 for half the pot. His sole remaining opponent was Emil Brunnberg and the Swede tossed in a single T-5,000 chip for the call.

Wals turned over the {A-Clubs}{K-Diamonds} for top pair and top kicker, which was good enough to win the pot.

Klassen and Ohman Win Big Pots

Level 3 : 150/300, 25 ante
Ricardo Klassen
Ricardo Klassen

Ricardo Klassen won a big pot just before the first break of the day when he took on Raul Olarescu. The duo invested 7,200 each on the {A-Hearts}{10-Diamonds}{8-Hearts}{6-Diamonds} turn with Olarescu check-calling and the {Q-Spades} on the river was checked down. Olarescu showed {A-Clubs}{K-Clubs} and Klassen had that beat with the {A-Spades}{10-Spades} for two pair.

One table over, the completed board showed {10-Clubs}{7-Clubs}{4-Spades}{6-Diamonds}{9-Hearts} and there were already 30,000 in the middle. Jan Marcus Ohman bet 7,000 and Martin Soukup reluctantly called. Ohman showed the {A-Spades}{A-Hearts} and Soukup double-checked his cards before sending them into the muck.

Black Chips Up Further

Level 2 : 100/200, 25 ante

Pascal Rabany, who finished 18th in the €330 Deep Stack Open Cup, entered Day 1a of the Main Event soon after and sits right next to Frida Andersson. On the same table, Jakub Groblewski defended out of the blinds and check-called a bet of 700 by Michael Tucknott on the {A-Clubs}{Q-Spades}{9-Spades} flop. The {7-Diamonds} turn was checked and Groblewski's bet of 1,375 on the {3-Hearts} river won the pot without showdown.

Andy Black took on Katsuhiro Muto, who also defended out of the blinds. Muto proceeded to check-call bets of 500 on the {J-Clubs}{10-Hearts}{7-Hearts} flop and 1,000 on the {4-Clubs} turn. Muto checked the third street in a row on the {6-Hearts} river and Black won the pot with a third barrel worth 3,000, as Muto elected to fold.

The Japanese was left with around 8,000 after the hand and busted shortly after to become the third casualty on Day 1.

Segers and Mathers Win Pots

Level 2 : 100/200, 25 ante

Kalman Dohany defended his big blind against a raise by Gilles Segers and check-called a bet of 625 on the {A-Spades}{J-Diamonds}{8-Clubs} flop. The {6-Hearts} followed on the turn and Dohany checked, then faced a second barrel worth 2,300 by Segers. That was enough to break down the resistance of Dohany and he sent his cards into the muck. After a decent start into the day, his stack has since dipped below the 30,000 he started with.

One table over, Kevin Mathers raked in a pot without showdown. He had bet 2,500 out of the small blind with the board showing {7-Spades}{7-Diamonds}{4-Diamonds}{5-Clubs}{Q-Diamonds} and Harry Wals opted to fold.

"I gonna show one," Mathers said in table chat and flashed the {7-Clubs}, Wals replied with a "nice hand."

Black Leads the Field

Level 2 : 100/200, 25 ante

Soon after sitting down on Day 1a, Andy Black has chipped up and doubled his stack, which also explains why Hans de Hond can no longer be found seated at the same table. The Dutchman has become the first casualty of the day and may re-enter in tomorrow's turbo heat 1c as of 9 p.m. local time.
