By the Numbers: Redux

Well the numbers were in. And then they changed. For the first couple levels of play, the tournament clock showed 66 entrants, and the prize pool was calculated for that number. However, we would have one more straggler join. Tim Olsen won his seat for the Championship Event in a satellite, but he was apparently confused by the start time. After showing up too late to register, the tournament staff decided that the right thing to do was to let Olsen join the field. As a result, all of the numbers have slid up the scale slightly.

The extra runner brings the total prize pool up to $313,950. Ninth place is now worth $9,419, while first place will take home $113,020, plus the $11,000 Main Event package and the ring. Full corrected payouts are now posted in the "Prizepool and Payouts" section at the right of this page.

Engel Flushes Liggett On River

Ari Engel raised to 550 from under the gun and Russell Liggett called. The flop came down {J-Diamonds} {4-Spades} {3-Clubs} and both players checked. The turn fell the {J-Clubs} and Engel led out for 800. Liggett made the call.

After the river came the {10-Clubs}, Engel fired out 1,700. "I have to look you up," said Liggett as he tossed out the chips. As soon as he did, Engel flipped up {A-Clubs} {9-Clubs} for a flush.

"I should have come over the top of you preflop," commented Liggett.

Slezak Eliminated

Bob Slezak - Eliminated
After Timothy Begley raised under the gun and Harold Kruger called from a later position, Bob Slezak moved all in for his last few thousand chips. Begley made the call and Kruger got out of the way.

Begley had Slezak's kings dominated with pocket aces. After the dealer ran the board, Begley's aces were still good and he was able to eliminate WSOP bracelet winner Bob Slezak from the championship event.

More Love (and Chips) for "begsclutch"

With a couple limpers in front, a player at Table 29 elected to raise to 900. He got one call, and action came around to Tim Begley. Begley has been short all day, and he had just about 3,000 left before this hand. Looking down at {9-?} {9-?}, he moved all in. The original raiser called, putting Begley at risk of elimination. When nobody else wanted to tangle, Begley saw his opponent turn over {A-?} {Q-?}, and the race was on for his tournament life.

To his delight, and to the benefit of his chip stack, the board ran safe for "begsclutch", and he has nearly tripled up, sitting right at 8,000 now.

Ilich Busts Byrum

The flop was {A-Hearts} {9-Diamonds} {2-Clubs} between Jeremy Byrum and Drazen Ilich. Byrum led into Ilich for 1,500 and Ilich made the call. After the turn came the {Q-Diamonds}, Byrum led again, this time for 3,125. Ilich again made the call.

The river fell the {K-Diamonds} and Byrum took his time couting out his stack. He had just over 7,000 and moved them all into the middle. Ilich made the call.

"Ace," said Byrum as he tabled {A-Diamonds} {6-Clubs}. Ilich rolled over the {A-Spades} {10-Clubs} and his ten kicker played, eliminating Byrum from the event.

Ilich has been on fire the entire series here in Iowa and has amassed just under 70,000 chips so far today.

No Action for Stiglets

After the flop came down {J-Clubs} {6-Diamonds} {3-Diamonds}, Eric Stiglets led out for a bet of 1,000. He was called by Steve Senger in the cutoff seat.

The turn came the {9-Clubs} and Stiglets fired out 3,000 this time. Senger elected to fold and Stiglets flashed the {A-Diamonds} {J-Diamonds} for top pair, top kicker and a flush draw.

Donna is Done

Donna Bryan - Eliminated
Donna Bryan - Eliminated
We have our first casualty in the Battle of the Sexes. Donna Bryan, who has had a fantastic series here this week, has just been eliminated. Working with a short stack, Donna saw a heads-up flop with pocket tens. The board showed {6-?} {2-?} {2-?}. She checked, and her opponent bet 2,000, which she called.

The turn would prove to be disastrous for Bryan. A {K-?} peeled off, and her opponent put her all in. Donna said she was pot committed at that point, and she put the rest of her chips in the middle. Much to her chagrin, her opponent tabled {A-?} {K-?}, having caught up on the turn. The river was a blank, and Donna Bryan has been sent to the exit.

The hopes of the Bryan family now rest in the hands of husband Jeffrey, who sits with about 18,000 in chips.
