Gurfinkel Running Good

Level 12 : 600/1,200, 200 ante

Jeffrey Gurfinkel has had a better than average week. He won Event No. 4 here a few days ago, earning $25,740 for topping a field of 390 in the $365 no-limit hold'em event and earning his second career WSOP-C ring. And today has gone pretty well for him, too, particularly the last few minutes.

All in with a short stack with {J-Hearts}{4-Hearts} against an opponent's {A-Clubs}{J-Spades}, Gurfinkel had already gotten up out of his seat as the dealer burned a card and began to deal the flop.

Soon he was sitting back down, though, as the first three community cards came {K-Hearts}{Q-Hearts}{3-Hearts}. A saving flush for Gurfinkel, and by the {Q-Clubs} turn his opponent was drawing dead.

Low Riding High

Level 11 : 500/1,000, 100 ante

We just came on a huge pot brewing between Michael Kaufman and Tyng Low over on Table 83. The big betting came following a {8-Spades}{5-Clubs}{K-Clubs} flop, resulting in Kaufman being all in for his last 70,000 or so.

Kaufman had {8-Hearts}{8-Diamonds} for a flopped set of eights while Low had {K-Diamonds}{Q-Diamonds} for kings. The turn brought the {Q-Spades}, and Low responded by patting the felt as though to encourage a favorable river card to appear.

The dealer then burned a card and delivered fifth street… the {K-Hearts}! A better full house for Low, coming runner-runner, and Kaufman could only smile at the surprising way his WSOP-C Main Event run has concluded.

That hand pushes Low up over 170,000, finally putting someone within shouting distance of leader Benedetto Bianco's stack.

Pegasus Stopped

Level 11 : 500/1,000, 100 ante

"I was all in with aces... got beat by tens."

So said Mark Smith, as he informed us how his Day 2 has come to an abrupt end. Thus there will be no record-tying sixth WSOP Circuit gold ring for "Pegasus" in this event.

Bolden Loses a Small One

Level 11 : 500/1,000, 100 ante

The player under the gun raised it up to 2,200, and two-time ring winner Gary Bolden was the lone caller in late position. The two checked a flop of {6-Clubs}{10-Spades}{j-Spades}, and the turn brought the {2-Hearts}. Bolden's opponent fired out 3,500, and Bolden came along to see the {8-Hearts} hit the river. Bolden then face a bet of 5,500 from his opponent, and that was too much for him, as he kicked his cards in.

It hasn't been the best start of the day for Bolden. He's still sitting on 90,000, which is well above average, but it's down almost 20,000 from his starting stack for the day.

Sica Sunk, Leong Leaping Up

Level 10 : 400/800, 100 ante

Mike Sica began Day 2 sitting behind one of the room's shortest stacks, and unfortunately for the player known as "Little Man" he couldn't turn a little into a lot today, finding himself knocked out here at the end of Level 10.

Meanwhile Christopher Leong — who also began today with just a little — has enjoyed a much different first level. Just now he was involved again in a hand that had reached the flop with a pot of about 7,000 and the board showing {10-Spades}{8-Hearts}{3-Hearts}.

Leong led for 2,600, his opponent raised to 13,000, then Leong shoved all in for about 34,000 total. His opponent thought a while, then let his hand go.

Tran Takes Out Pollack

Level 10 : 400/800, 100 ante

Ryan Pollack entered the day with a short stack of just about 10 big blinds, but soon picked up a hand — {A-Hearts}{K-Diamonds} — for which it was worth risking his tourney life. Alas for Pollack, Tony Tran was waiting for him with {A-Clubs}{A-Diamonds}.

The board ran out {6-Diamonds}{Q-Diamonds}{2-Diamonds}{K-Hearts}{10-Diamonds}, giving both players flushes but Tran's the better of the two, and Pollack is out.

The Leong Run

Level 10 : 400/800, 100 ante

Christopher Leong began today having won two WSOP-C gold rings already this week in preliminary events here at Caesars Atlantic City. But he also started with one of the shortest stacks in the room among the nearly 300 players still battling for this ring.

Thus did Leong get to work right away, three-bet shoving his short stack from the blinds on both of his first two hands. Neither of those bets earned callers, but a few hands later he was open-pushing from middle position for about 17,000, then picked up one caller from the big blind.

Leong had {Q-Spades}{Q-Clubs} this time while his opponent had {J-Hearts}{J-Diamonds}, and when the board came eight-high — {8-Diamonds}{5-Spades}{6-Clubs}{4-Clubs}{8-Hearts} — Leong had doubled to climb back up out of the danger zone and ensure his Main Event run would continue.
