Affleck Makes a Quick Exit

Matt Affleck, we hardly knew ye. At least when it came to today's event.. Within two levels, Affleck burned through the 20,000 starting stack and was the first notable to be eliminated. We didn't catch the hand, but tablemate Ari Engel told us that Affleck had {j-}{j-} against the {a-}{a-} of his opponent, and that the money got in on the turn with the board reading all low cards.

Affleck will be back at 5:00 p.m. to try his luck in Day 1b.

Liebert Loses a Chunk

Kathy Liebert is down to 12,300 after losing a big pot to an opponent at her table.

With about 1,200 in the pot and four players to act, the flop rolled out {9-Spades}{9-Hearts}{8-Diamonds}. Action checked around and the {3-Spades} came on the turn. Liebert checked from the big blind, as did the player under the gun. The player in the cutoff then bet 1,000.

Action folded back to Liebert who put in a check-raise to 2,100. The player under-the-gun folded and the player in the cuttoff thought momentarily, then called.

The river was the {J-Hearts} and Liebert continued her line by betting 3,000. Her opponent grabbed a stack of chips, and counted out a bet of 8,000 before putting it in the pot.

After a quick tank, Liebert mucked her cards and dropped to 12,300 in chips.

Liu Looks Him Up

With 600 chips already in the pot and action on Edmund Liu on the button, he bet 400 with the board reading {J-Diamonds}{5-Clubs}{10-Spades}.

The player in the small blind check raised to 1,000 and action folded back around to Liu, who called.

The turn came the {10-Clubs} and the player in the small blind bet 2,000. Liu thought briefly before opting to call.

The {5-Diamonds} came on the river and the player in the small blind said "three," before throwing out a blue 5,000 chip, and Liu quickly called.

The player in the small blind mucked his hand and said "good call," and Liu took the pot without having to show his hand. After that, Liu is one of the early chip leaders in the room with just around 40,000.

For those who don't recognize the name, Liu made the final table of the WSOPC Rincon Main Event last month, finishing fourth for $35,779.

Baldwin Back Down To Starting Stack

Eric Baldwin quickly shot to the top of our leaderboard with a nice hand early on, but it didn't take long for him to lose a pot to get back down to the 20,000 starting stack.

We saw Baldwin lead out 350 on a {5-Spades}{4-Diamonds}{3-Clubs} flop, and his lone opponent came along. The {q-Spades} hit the turn, and Baldwin stayed aggressive, firing 1,050. Once again his opponent called, and the river brought the scary {a-Spades}. Baldwin slowed down and checked, and his opponent took the opportunity to fire out a pot size bet of 3,150.

Baldwin tanked for about a minute before counting out the chips for the call. He kept them in his hand, and peered down at his remaining stack. Eventually, he flicked his cards towards the dealer, and his opponent took the pot.

After that hand, Baldwin is sitting on 20,500.

Engel Winning the Small Ones Early

Ari Engel is off to a good start after taking a small pot from two opponents early today.

We caught the action with Engel in the big blind as he and the smalled blind both called a 150 raise from the player under the gun + 1.

The flop fell {j-Diamonds}{6-Hearts}{5-Hearts} and all three players checked. The turn then came the {Q-Hearts} and the small blind took the opportunity to bet 150. Engel made a small raise to 325 and the original raiser quickly folded.

The player in the small blind thought briefly before mucking this cards and with that Engel moved up to just about 20,500 in chips
