Nicholson Plays Out of the Rough

Level 9 : 300/600, 75 ante
David Nicholson
David Nicholson

David Nicholson has been hovering right around the starting stack of 20,000 whenever we've passed by his table. Wearing a green Master's cap today, Nicholson and many other players in the spacious Harrah's Cherokee Event Center have had their attentions occasionally taken up by the huge projection screen where today's second round of the Master's has been playing out.

Nicholson was intent on the cards during our most recent pass, however, firing a bet of 2,000 into pot slightly larger than that following a {7-Diamonds}{10-Spades}{Q-Clubs} flop. His opponent hemmed and hawed a little, then mucked, and Nicholson claimed some chips as others around him looked up to see Tiger Woods's next shot.

Roesel Can't Call River

Level 9 : 300/600, 75 ante

Dale Roesel, who finished third in the 2013 World Series of Poker Circuit Choctaw Main Event opened to 1,125 from late position, a player three-bet to 2,600 from the big blind, and Roesel called.

The dealer fanned {2-Hearts}{3-Diamonds}{5-Spades}, the three-bettor led out for 3,200, and Roesel called.

The turn was the {j-Diamonds}, the player led out again - this time for 4,000 - and Roesel lazily flicked forward a grey T5,000 chip, making the call.

A repeat jack - the {j-Hearts} - completed the board, and the player instantly moved all in. Roesel snap-mucked, but is still healthy with 36,000 chips.

Emerging Emmel

Level 8 : 250/500, 50 ante
Matthew Emmel
Matthew Emmel

Matthew Emmel continues his climb up the chip counts, having just won another hand to push himself up over the 100,000-chip mark.

The hand saw four players see a {A-Diamonds}{2-Spades}{5-Diamonds} flop, then when checked to Emmel fired a bet of 1,800 (about half the pot) from late position and only the button called.

The turn then brought the {Q-Spades} and Emmel was betting again, this time for 3,300. His opponent considered a few moments, then let his hand go.

Bazeley Back on the Baize

Level 8 : 250/500, 50 ante

"Let's have a round of applause for our Event #9 final tablists!"

As the first Day 1 flight of the Main Event continues on the main floor, up on the main stage Event #9 (a $365 no-limit hold'em tourney) is playing down to its conclusion, and that recent announcement let everyone know that event is now down to a final nine.

A two-day event, Jacob Bazeley of Kentucky had begun today's final day of play in Event #9 as the chip leader with 23 left before busting in 15th place for a $2,923 cash. Soon after his elimination there, Bazeley jumped into Day 1a of the ME, although he's struggled thus far this afternoon, slipping down to about half the starting stack of 20,000.

Just now we saw him defending his big blind after a button raise, then both he and his opponent checked the {7-Clubs}{8-Spades}{10-Clubs} flop. The turn brought the {9-Clubs} and a bet of 1,500 from Bazeley, and his opponent called.

The river was the {10-Diamonds}, and Bazeley responded by pushing all in for his last 8,500 or so. His opponent thought for a while, then let his hand go.

"Four-flush... kings versus queens!"

So reported Ryan Riess to us as he left, filling us in shorthand-style on the story of his elimination from Day 1a.

"I'll be back tomorrow," he added as a postscript, and we told him we'll be seeing him Saturday.
