Kroon Eliminated for a Second Time

Level 12 : 600/1,200, 200 ante
Mark "P0ker H0" Kroon
Mark "P0ker H0" Kroon

Over in the Day 1b field, which is in Level 5 (100/200/25), there was 1,500 in the pot and a flop of {2-Hearts}{4-Hearts}{10-Hearts} when a player in the small blind checked and the big blind bet 1,200. Mark Fink, who won a ring last night and is the current Casino Championship points leader with 95, then raised to 3,200 from middle position only to have Mark "P0ker H0" Kroon three-bet to 6,125.

The big blind and Fink called, and then both checked the {4-Clubs} turn. Kroon fired in his last 14,000, the big blind folded, and Fink called. Kroon tabled the {K-Hearts}{3-Hearts} for a flopped flush, and he seemed none too pleased when Fink showed the {4-Spades}{2-Clubs} for a full house.

"With bottom two you called 6,000 chips?" Kroon asked incredulously before exiting the Main Event for the final time.

Holmes Hanging In

Level 12 : 600/1,200, 200 ante

After the pot was raised 2,200, Mike Holmes shoved all-in for 22,000. There was about a minute pause before his opponent made the call and their cards were tabled:

Holmes: {a-Spades}{10-Diamonds}
Opponent: {6-Clubs}{6-Diamonds}

The {9-Hearts}{q-Clubs}{8-Clubs} flop was not good for Holmes, but the {7-Hearts} on the turn gave him a straight draw with two over cards. The {a-Clubs} peeled off on the river and to give Homes the 44,000 pot.

Mayfield Takes Down Event #4; Carli Notches 103rd WSOP Circuit Cash

Once again, we turn to the WSOP's Lukas Willems for a look back at a prelim event. This time it's Event 4 $365 No-Limit Hold’em:

Jason Mayfield has most certainly put in his time on the WSOP Circuit. Between September of 2007 and now, he racked up 26 WSOP-related cashes and four final tables. He finished 8th, 3rd and 2nd, but his most recent final table appearance is the one that will stay with him the longest.

The finale in question took place Monday night at Horseshoe Casino in Council Bluffs, Iowa and it was that of Event 4, a $365 No-Limit Hold’em tournament. Mayfield bested the other eight participants in two short hours, earning his largest WSOP cash, his first gold ring and taking the Casino Championship lead in the process.

“When you get so close, you want it more each time,” Mayfield said of his past shortcomings.

He came to the Event 4 final table as the second player to make multiple final table appearances through the first four events at Council Bluffs. David Sutton, the other player to do so, finished 2nd in Event 2 and 8th in Event 3, amassing 55 points and taking the early lead in the Casino Championship.

Mayfield needed a 5th-place finish to tie Sutton and a 4th-place finish or better to take the lead outright, but standing in his way was the man they call Rico, Doug Carli.

Carli is a bit of a legend on the WSOP Circuit, cashing in seemingly every event he plays. Prior to tonight, the now-57-year-old retired stockbroker had recorded an astonishing 102 WSOP-related cashes including 27 final tables and two gold ring championships since January 2005.

Rico added to his legend in Event 4, finishing 8th and earning his 103rd career WSOP-related cash, seven better than Phil Hellmuth’s 96. Needless to say, Mayfield was thankful to see Carli come into the finale short stacked and needing some help.

With Rico’s early exit, Mayfield made short work of the rest of the competition and eventually bested David Yee heads-up earning 50 points and bringing his total to 80, 25 clear of Sutton now in second place.

Cohen Sends Tran to the Rail

Level 11 : 500/1,000, 100 ante

According to Brett Schwertley, Henry Tran had three-bet an under-the-gun raiser's 2,400 open to 7,400. Louie Cohen, in the three seat and to Tran's immediate left, raised all in. The player under the gun folded and Tran called off his last 18,000 chips with {A-}{K-}. Unfortunately for him, Cohen tabled {K-}{K-} and his hand held. Cohen now has around 68,000.

Cortum Takes Chips From Ilich

Level 11 : 500/1,000, 100 ante

We picked up the action with Drazen Ilich and Kelly Cortum heads up on a {6-Diamonds}{5-Hearts}{4-Diamonds} flop. Cortum, from the small blind, had made a 3,000 bet, which Ilich, in the cutoff, raised to 6,500 only to see Cortum reraise to 12,000. Ilich called and the two saw a {K-Spades} turn. Cortum moved all in for Ilich's last 24,000.

"You got it," Ilich said, slowly pushing his cards into the middle. Cortum said after the hand that he flopped a set.

"I Got Lucky"

Level 11 : 500/1,000, 100 ante

Ari Engel is a WSOP Circuit stud. The famed internet player, who played under the moniker "BodogAri", has 25 cashes on the circuit for $318,659. Oh, and he happens to have five rings, just one behind all-time leader Alex Masek.

Both of those men are still in action here on Day 1a, and Engel seems to be in the midst of a heater. The last timewe checked on him he was sitting below the chip average, but now he's vaulted up to 71,000. When asked how he did it, Engel responded, "I got lucky."

Ilich Calls a Bluff

Level 11 : 500/1,000, 100 ante

Drazen Ilich min-raised to 1,600 in early position on one of the last hands at Level 10 (400/800/100) and Jeff Heiberg called from the small blind. Both players checked a {K-Clubs}{9-Diamonds}{J-Diamonds} flop, and the {J-Spades} fell on the turn. Heiberg led out for 2,400 and Ilich quickly called. The river was the {9-Clubs} and Heiberg fired again on the double-paired board, this time 7,200. Ilich contemplated for a moment before announcing a call, and Heiberg simply mucked his cards shortly thereafter.
