Nelson Wins a Battle of Short Stacks

Level 10 : 500/1,000, 1,000 ante

After a raise to 2,400 from the hijack and a call from the cutoff, the small blind shoved for 10,500, and Glen Nelson shoved over the top for 14,900, chasing out the hijack. The cutoff tanked for a bit before deciding to fold as well.

Opponent: {a-Spades}{8-Diamonds}
Glen Nelson: {j-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds}

Nelson improved to jacks-up on the {6-Diamonds}{6-Hearts}{j-Spades} flop, and took one of his opponent's outs away on the {5-Diamonds} turn. The {4-Diamonds} river gave Nelson a flush, while the cutoff cried out, saying he folded a full house. Nelson breathed a sigh of relief, then raked in the pot.

The PokerNews Live Reporting Team is in Milwaukee to live report action the $1,700 Main Event, but is just one of a dozen gold ring events at the stop. As such, we thought we’d profile some of the preliminary tournaments and those who struck it big.

Event #6: $400 Pot-Limit Omaha drew 166 entrants and offered up a $54,780 prize pool to the top 25 players including Ben Rock (13th - $801), Mike Hanson (15th - $801), Brad Sailor (21st - $632), and Goran Filipovic (25th - $564).

Coming out on top was 43-year-old Hao “John” Sun, a regular at Potawatomi Casino. He not only won a $14,190 first-place prize, he also laid claim to his first WSOP Circuit gold ring. What’s more, it was his second taste of victory in a month. In August, Sun topped a 324-entry field to win the MSPT Majestic Star $1,100 Main Event for $71,945, which was his second MSPT title after becoming the 2016 Iowa State Poker Champion at Meskwaki Casino.

“I feel great. Think I’ll go get a nice dinner and party like a rockstar,” Sun said after the win.

Shanahan Nearly Triples Up

Level 10 : 500/1,000, 1,000 ante
Mike Shanahan
Mike Shanahan

Peter Alba ripped his last 10,400 in from middle position, and Frank Cerminara called next to act. Mike Shanahan made the call in the small blind, leaving himself just 1,200 behind.

Shanahan committed those last 1,200 chips after the {10-Diamonds}{4-Clubs}{5-Hearts} flop, and Cerminara called.

Peter Alba: {a-Clubs}{q-Hearts}
Frank Cerminara: {a-Spades}{k-Hearts}
Mike Shanahan: {7-Clubs}{5-Clubs}

Shanahan's pair of fives was ahead, and he held on the {j-Diamonds} turn and {10-Hearts} river to eliminate Alba and essentially triple up.

Hanson's Sixes Can't Best McArthur

Level 9 : 400/800, 800 ante

After a raise from Michael Hanson on the button, Joseph McArthur three-bet to 6,400 in the small blind, and Hanson four-bet jammed for 28,000. McArthur thought for a few moments, then called.

Michael Hanson: {6-Clubs}{6-Hearts}
Joseph McArthur: {a-Spades}{q-Clubs}

The {q-Diamonds} in the window spelled disaster for Hanson, and the rest of the {k-Hearts}{2-Hearts} flop brought little immediate help. The {9-Hearts} turn gave Hanson a flush draw, but the {10-Clubs} river left Hanson done for the day.

Ken Komberec
Ken Komberec

Jacob Rich raised to 1,800 from under the gun, and Melissa Bryne three-bet shoved for 20,000 from middle position. Ken Komberec four-bet jammed for 23,600 on the button, and Rich tanked for a minute before folding.

Melissa Bryne: {a-Diamonds}{k-Clubs}
Ken Komberec: {j-Spades}{j-Diamonds}

Komberec's jacks got no sweat on a {10-Diamonds}{5-Diamonds}{4-Spades}{5-Clubs}{2-Clubs} board, and he eliminated Bryne.
