Rodriguez Doubles Up Wong; Is Still Climbing

Level 19 : 4,000/8,000, 8,000 ante
Noel Rodriguez
Noel Rodriguez

Marty Wong announced that he was all in as he put his last 32,000 forward from under the gun. Action folded around to Noel Rodriguez, who confirmed the amount, shrugging as he reluctantly dropped in a T25,000 chip to call.

Marty Wong: {a-Diamonds}{q-Clubs}
Noel Rodriguez: {9-Hearts}{4-Spades}

Wong found himself steadily ahead but needing to fade Rodriguez's two live cards to stay alive. The board ran out {7-Spades}{3-Spades}{j-Diamonds}{2-Diamonds}{j-Hearts}, staying clean all along to earn Wong the double and give him a bit more fold equity along the way.

Pham checked again, and Nat went all in, prompting Pham to fold.

"Good river man. Good river," said Pham as Nat collected the pot.

Lancaster Makes Six-Card Straight but Chops; Chip Counts from Table 4

Level 19 : 4,000/8,000, 8,000 ante

Noel Rodriguez opened to 17,000 from the hijack and was called by Alfie Poetra, who was on the button. Mike Lancaster was in the big blind and defended to take action three ways to a flop of {j-Diamonds}{9-Spades}{10-Diamonds}. All three players checked.

The turn {q-Clubs} saw three more checks, bringing the river {8-Spades} to put a queen-high straight on board. Lancaster put out a bet of 25,000 and got a fold from Rodriguez. Poetra then called.

Upon calling, Poetra tabled {8-Hearts}{9-Hearts}, playing the board. Lancaster remakred he had a six-card straight as he turned over {7-Clubs}{7-Diamonds}, with neither of his sevens coming into play either. As a result, the two chopped up the blinds and antes as well as Rodriguez's preflop investment into the pot and got ready for another hand of battle at the felt.

Dustin Crump on Day 1a Action

An all in and a call had just occurred on a board of {q-Diamonds}{7-Spades}{j-Diamonds} between Dustin Crump, who was under the gun, and Angelo Kratsas, who was on the button. There was about 40,000 in the pot prior to flop action with Crump at risk for his tournament life.

Jimmy Zeledon Breaks Through in Event #9: $400 NLH (One-Day)

Level 19 : 4,000/8,000, 8,000 ante
Jimmy Zeledon

The PokerNews Live Reporting Team is at Thunder Valley to live report action from both the $1,700 Main Event and $3,250 High Roller, but those are just a couple of the dozen gold ring events at the stop. As such, we thought we’d profile some of the preliminary tournaments and those who struck it big.

In Event #9: $400 No-Limit Hold’em (One-Day), 116 entries created a $38,280 prize pool that was paid out to the top 18 players. Among those to cash but fall short of the final table were David Nguyen (10th - $735), Jarod Minghini (12th - $735), and Shahin Shojaeyan (18th - $551), just to name a few.

When the dust settled, 49-year-old Jimmy Zeledon of San Jose, California prevailed to win the title for $10,582 and his first gold ring.

“It feels great, I’m so happy,” he said. “This is like a personal dream for me. It’s a great accomplishment. My goal was to win a ring. I finally did it.”

He continued: “I became one of the short stacks and then I got extremely lucky with ace-queen versus king-eight and aces. I flopped a gutshot and got there on the river. That was the key hand right there. That’s what made me get to the win.”
