J.J. Liu . . . a Star in her Field and Beautiful Flower in the Sea of Faces

Joanne "J.J." Liu, is another colorful personality in today's event. Just like her husband, Dan Alspach, she has a flare for fashion, wearing stylish hats and matching outfits. Liu is considered to be one of the top women poker players in the world. She made her first final table in a major poker tournament in a 1996 World Series of Poker limit hold'em event, the same year she started playing poker.

So far in her career she has made it to the final table 27 times, finishing as follows:

1st: 3 times
2nd: 3 times
3rd: 4 times
4th: 5 times
5th: 2 times
6th: 2 times
7th: 3 times
8th: 2 times
9th: 3 times

Dan and J.J. are well known and respected in the world of poker. They both enjoy the competition and I'm sure we will see them in many more events.

Big Slick for The Grinder

Board:
{7-Clubs}{2-Clubs}{7-Hearts}{6-Diamonds}{J-Hearts}

A player under the gun raises and a middle position player calls. Michael Mizrachi in the cutoff re-raises and the UTG player re-raises 125 all in. The middle position player caps it and Mizrachi calls. On the turn, middle position checks, Mizrachi bets and MP calls. On the river, middle position checks, Mizrachi bets and MP folds. UTG shows {A-Clubs}{Q-Hearts} and Mizrachi shows {A-Hearts}{K-Spades} for the win. He's up to 5,700.

Lots of Action, Big Reward

Eric Lynch
Eric Lynch
Eric Lynch raised a bet from the player under the gun and found himself reraised by the big blind. The player under the gun called the reraise as did Lynch.

Flop: {K-Diamonds}{J-Clubs}{7-Hearts}

The big blind bet out on the flop and was called by the player under the gun, but Lynch raised the bet, putting the player under the gun all-in. Both players made the call and the {3-Hearts} fell on the turn. The player under the gun checked the turn, Lynch bet, then the player under the gun raised, Lynch reraised, and the player called. The {Q-Diamonds} landed on the river and the gun player checked to Lynch, who bet again, and the player under the gun called.

Lynch turned over {K-Spades}{K-Diamonds} and both remaining players mucked. Talk about a monster pot!

JC Tran Climbing Up

Board:
{9-Clubs}{6-Hearts}{7-Hearts}{10-Spades}{7-Clubs}

Picking it up on the turn, Tom Dobrilovic bets 300 and JC Tran raises. Dobrilovic calls. On the river, Dobrilovic checks. Tran bets and Dobrilovic calls.
Tran shows {10-Clubs}{10-Hearts} for the full house and wins a 3,000 pot. Dobrilovic mucks and Tran is up to 6,200.

The Singing Began, and Abruptly Ended

Humberto Brenes
Humberto Brenes
After the action was folded around to Humberto Brenes, he quickly bet. Only the small blind called and they were heads up going to the flop.

Flop:{8-Clubs}{2-Clubs}{2-Diamonds}

The small blind checked and Humberto bet. Immediately following the bet, Humberto started the quiet serenade while he waited for his opponent to make a decision. His opponent called and the turn was the {7-Spades}. The small blind checked and Humberto bet again, as the singing picked up. The river was the {9-Diamonds} and both players checked.

Humberto turned over Q-J while his opponent showed A-Q. Even though Humberto has stopped singing for now, we imagine it is only a matter of time before another Costa Rican melody is heard.

The Missed Raise Incident

In another bizarre situation, Roxanne Rhodes bets on the turn, pushing one chip in with a finger, but the dealer and the player behind her both miss her action.
The player behind her checks, and the dealer turns over a six, which would have given Rhodes ({6-Hearts}{7-Hearts}) trip sixes. Rhodes argues that the player should have had to call her turn raise, and the dealer concedes this, shuffling the river card back into the deck and rewinding the action. Rhodes' opponent raises. Rhodes calls and the river is the same six. Rhodes bets, her opponent calls and she takes down the pot.
