John Phan Makes A Big Laydown

John "The Razor" Phan
John "The Razor" Phan
Two early position players limped as did John Phan from the small blind. The big blind checked his option and the four players saw the flop of {K-Clubs}{K-Spades}{10-Clubs}. Phan led out for 600 and got two calls. The turn card came the {A-Hearts}. All three players checked. The river came the {6-Spades}. Phan bet 4,000 and the next player to act raised to 10,000. The player in between called and Phan went into the tank. After a couple of minutes, he showed his cards -- {Q-Clubs}{J-Clubs} -- to his side of the table before folding. The raiser had A-A for a full house and Phan seemed content with losing the minimum on the hand.

Who's Worried About Daniel?

Daniel Negreanu
Daniel Negreanu
Daniel Negreanu just picked up a nice pot that as usual with Negreanu involved lots of table talk.

Five players saw a flop of {5-Spades}{3-Spades}{2-Diamonds}. The action was checked to the button who bet 4,000. Two players called before it got back to Negreanu, who then made it 10,000, saying "I'm not worried about you (pointing at one of the players), I'm worried about him." The button folded and the player in seat one made the call.

The action was then on the player Negreanu was "worried" about. "I'm not worried about you, Daniel, I'm worried about him!" he said, indicating the player who had called Daniel's raise. He then flashed pocket aces to the crowd behind him before mucking them.

The turn card was the {J-Spades}. Negreanu's opponent checked, Negreanu moved all in, and his opponent mucked.

Someone said "show the bluff," to which Negreanu replied "Bluff? Do you think I'm gonna check-raise 19 people for my tournament life? I could beat three 3's. You're smart . . . you figure it out."

Negreanu is now up to 52,000. I think a lot of people are worried.

2006 WSOP World Champion Jamie Gold Eliminated

Jamie Gold
Jamie Gold
Jamie Gold moved all in with a short stack. His opponent called with {A-Hearts}{7-Clubs}. Gold flipped over {Q-Spades}{9-Spades}. The flop was {K-Diamonds}{6-Diamonds}{6-Spades}. The turn was the {7-Diamonds}. Gold was drawing to six outs. His tournament life and run as World Champion was on the line. He stood up preparing for the worst. Alas, the {K-Hearts} fell on the river. The 2006 WSOP Champion Jamie Gold was eliminated.

There will not be back-to-back champions this year. The last player to win consecutive titles was Johnny Chan back in 1987 and 1988. Chan was close to being a three-peat. Chan lost to Phil Hellmuth heads-up at the 1989 main event.

Steve Zolotow Eliminated

Our feature table has just seen the elimination of Steve "The Bald Eagle" Zolotow. In the small blind and facing a 2,000 raise from a late position player, Steve went into the tank for a while. He eventually announced "all-in." The big blind folded and the initial raiser called instantly.

Steve showed {Q-Hearts}{Q-Diamonds} while his opponent had {A-Clubs}{A-Hearts}.

The board was bad for Steve, coming {9-Hearts}{10-Spades}{A-Spades}, so he was looking for running queens or straight cards. The {4-Hearts} on the turn was neither and the {4-Diamonds} on the river was irrelevant.
