Tilly Doubles

Jennifer Tilly has been struggling early but she just found a handy double-up when she hit her straight on the river on the board of {5-Clubs}{K-Clubs}{J-Spades}{5-Hearts}{A-Spades}. Tilly held {Q-Diamonds}{10-Spades} and managed to get all the chips in on the river to get her head back above water with about 1,500 chips.

Jamie Gold Leaves Early

Jamie Gold
Jamie Gold
Jamie Gold pushed all in on a flop of {K-Diamonds}{3-Diamonds}{3-Hearts}. His opponent instantly called and happily turned over pocket aces, while Gold showed {7-Hearts}{8-Hearts}. The turn brought the {6-Diamonds} and the {J-Hearts} on the river was of no help, eliminating Gold from the tournament.

Black Powers On

Andy Black is continuing to play pots on Blue #22. The under-the-gun player raised preflop to 225 and got four callers, including Black out of the small blind. After Black checked, UTG made a continuation bet of 600 on the {6-Clubs}{4-Spades}{5-Hearts} flop. All folded to Black, who very casually put a stack of 3,000 chips in front of him. UTG tried to stare Black down but Black was having none of it, refusing to look up from the felt in front of him. After about a minute, UTG folded {Q-Diamonds}{Q-Clubs} face up.

Black pointed to the player on the button, who had also called the preflop raise, and said, "If he doesn't come, I don't." His stack is up to approximately 5,000 chips.

Alaei Cracks Rockets

Four limpers took a flop of {4-Diamonds}{J-Diamonds}{4-Hearts} and Daniel Alaei led out from the big blind with a pot-sized bet of 200. A player in middle position made the call and the other two players stepped aside.

The turn brought the {K-Spades} and Alaei fired out 500, which was min-raised by his opponent to 1,000. Alaei made the call. The river landed the {2-Hearts} and Alaei bet enough to put his opponent all in. He quickly called and showed pocket rockets, but Alaei flipped {4-Clubs}{7-Clubs} for flopped trips which was good to collect the pot and eliminate his opponent.

Alaei is off to a good start with around 6,500 in chips.

Another Familiar Face

Chris "Jesus" Ferguson has just joined us here in the Tropical Room, and has wasted no time engaging the table in a little friendly banter. Reading a poker magazine, he looks up every few seconds to laugh at the table conversation or insert a sly comment of his own into the mix. The other players seem grateful to be in his company, and he certainly gives us something interesting to watch here in the side room.

Chiu Likes the Dark

Our field reporters caught the action on the turn. With a board of {3-Hearts}{Q-Spades}{6-Clubs}{4-Hearts} David Chiu led out for 125, was raised, and without counting, grabbed a few chips and reraised. His opponent called and the {J-Hearts} fell on the river. Chiu shoved all in for 2,400 and his opponent folded. Chiu had been playing the entire hand in the dark, and while scooping up the pot laughed, "I knew what he had. I don't know what I had."

Mortensen Making Moves

Carlos Mortensen open-limped from early position and the player in the hijack position raised it to 350. The player on the button then made it 900 to go before Mortensen casually grabbed his entire stack and pushed it into the middle. The player in the hijack insta-folded and the button went into the tank.

"Man, do you have aces?" questioned the player, but Mortensen was motionless. The former eventually laid down his hand and Mortensen makes some early progress to now sit with 4,500 in chips.

An Interesting Announcement from the Floor Staff

In addition to the bracelet events that occur during the World Series of Poker, there are also tournaments held every night that players can take a shot at to build their bankrolls. The tournaments do not award bracelets, but they do award cold, hard cash.

An announcement was just made that, in addition to cash prizes, players can also earn Player of the Year points for various different Player of the Year races, not including the WSOP Player of the Year. It will be interesting to see if this drums up any additional interest in the evening tournaments.

Jerry Yang Eliminated

Jerry Yang
Jerry Yang
Jerry Yang led out for 200 preflop and was called by two players. The flop came {J-Clubs}{5-Spades}{9-Diamonds} and after the player in early position checked, Yang pushed all in for his remaining 400 in chips. The late-position player called while the early-position player folded. Yang turned over {K-Clubs}{10-Diamonds}, while his opponent showed {6-Clubs}{5-Clubs}. The turn was the {6-Spades} and Yang was eliminated after the river brought the {6-Hearts}.
