Profit Lost

Dominic Kay is back to his 20,000 starting stack. Holding pocket kings, he was up against an opponent with pocket eights. The flop came queen-high but contained an eight. Kay led out on the flop but check-called the turn. He was ready to check-fold the river, as he was sure his hand was no good, but his opponent checked, too, revealing his set.

This could have been a lot more expensive for Kay

Duke Dented

Annie Duke
Annie Duke
Annie Duke opened with a raise preflop to 525 from middle position and found two callers, from late position and the big blind.

They took a flop of {K-Diamonds}{9-Hearts}{5-Spades} and the big blind checked to Duke, who fired a 1,350 continuation bet. The late-position player folded with the big blind making the call.

The turn was the {3-Diamonds} and again it was checked to Duke, who fired out 2,300. The BB then check-raised to 8,300 and Duke was forced to give up her hand.

She was down to 24,500 before the following hand came up. Duke raised to 600 from the button and Duc Pham called in the big blind.

They took a flop of {6-Diamonds}{A-Clubs}{10-Clubs} and Pham checked to Duke, who fired out 700. Pham made the call. The turn was the {K-Diamonds} and Pham this time led out for 2000, before Duke popped it up to 6,600. Pham called. The river was the {7-Hearts}. Pham checked, Duke bet out 10,000 and Pham once again called.

"You got it," said Duke, as Pham showed {A-Clubs}{10-Spades} for two pair, which was good to take down the pot. Duke is now left with less than 6,000 chips.

Pelton Felted

Joe Pelton raised to 600 from under the gun, and it folded back around to Shane "Shaniac" Schleger who called from the small blind. The big blind got out of the way.

The flop came {K-Spades}{7-Spades}{J-Spades}. Schleger checked, and Pelton bet 1,000. Schleger paused for a bit, then check-raised to 3,100. Pelton quickly announced he was all in. "Call," said Schleger. No hesitation that time.

Schleger turned over {A-Spades}{9-Spades} -- he'd flopped the nut flush. Pelton showed {A-Clubs}{K-Hearts}. The turn was the {8-Hearts} and the river the {9-Hearts}, and Pelton was eliminated.

Schleger is up to 40,000.

Forrest Griffin KOed

On a flop of {K-Hearts} {8-Spades} {2-Hearts}, Forrest Griffin bet 200 from UTG, Johnny Chan raised to 1,100 from middle position, and Griffin made the call. The turn was the {8-Diamonds}. Griffin bet 1,000, Chan raised to 2,000, and Griffin called. The river was the {J-Diamonds}. Griffin bet another 1,000, Chan raised to 5,000, and Griffin called.

Chan rolled over {A-Spades} {K-Clubs} for two pair, while Griffin showed {J-Spades} {6-Spades}. The hand took the UFC fighter down to only 1,600.

On a subsequent hand, Griffin moved all in on a flop of {Q-Spades} {J-Hearts} {3-Clubs} and Vincent Curry made the call. Griffin showed {K-Spades} {9-Diamonds} while Curry tabled {Q-Diamonds} {8-Spades}. The turn and river blanked out for Griffin and he hit the rail.

Don't Mess With Griffin

ESPN reporter Ali Nejad has been filming video clips for ESPN in the back corner of the Blue section for the last four days. He was recently in the midst of one about UFC fighter Forrest Griffin, who fought last night, when Howard Lederer, sitting nearby, interrupted him.

"Ali, Ali -- how does he look?"

"He looks pretty bad," responded Nejad. "We might have to pixel out his face. I asked him, 'How do you feel?' and he said 'I feel great.' I said, 'You don't look it,' and he said, 'I'll make you look worse.'"

Lederer Better Than Yu

Howard Lederer
Howard Lederer
We recently passed by Blue #1 and saw that Howard Lederer was all in for 13,400 against one opponent, Charles Yu of Dover, Delaware, on a board of {3-Hearts} {J-Diamonds} {10-Hearts} {2-Clubs}. With the cameras rolling, the table talk commenced.

Yu: "I know you don't have it."
Lederer: "Oh, I have it."
Yu: "Maybe you should bet 10,000 and I'll call."
Lederer: "OK, I bet 10,000." He reached for his chips to take some back, then smiled and left them in the middle of the table.

A minute or so passed.

Lederer: "If you knock me out, they'll probably put you on TV."
Yu: "OK, OK. I fold. But I know you don't have it. If you had bet 5,000, I would have called."

As Lederer was raking the pot, he chuckled. "I like that he claims he would have called 5,000," said Lederer to the player on his left.

The discussion continued a few hands later, with Yu still not convinced that Lederer could beat king-jack, the hand Yu claims he folded.

"You should have made the hero call then," said Lederer. "You could have told all your friends to watch you on TV." Then he turned more serious, and said, "I raised you from first position, I raised you on the flop, and I moved in on the turn. Do you really think your jack was good?"

Yu had no response.

Yang Makes Big Laydown

Jerry Yang
Jerry Yang
Sebastien Moreau raised it up preflop to 600 with Jerry Yang and another opponent making the call.

The flop came {8-Clubs}{J-Hearts}{4-Hearts}. Moreau checked to Yang, who bet out 2,400. The third player then moved all in for 22,000. Moreau folded and Yang went into the tank.

"I think we have the same hand," said Jerry. "Will you show?"

His opponent was motionless, and Yang folded {A-Clubs}{J-Diamonds} face up on the table. His opponent didn't show and Yang is now back down to 8,200.
