Tay Nguyen Cracks Aces

Tay Nguyen and Joey Lovelady got it all in before the flop, Lovelady holding {A-Clubs} {A-Spades} and Nguyen {A-Hearts} {K-Diamonds}. The flop was {K-Spades} {Q-Spades} {4-Clubs}, the turn was the {8-Clubs}, and the {K-Hearts} spiked on the river, making Nguyen trip kings and doubling him up to 40,000. Lovelady was crippled, left with only 3,000.

Kwikfish and the Detective

On a flop of {Q-Diamonds}{5-Clubs}{10-Clubs}, a short-stacked Paul "Kwikfish" Wasicka got all of his chips in the middle with {K-Hearts}{Q-Spades}. 2008 WSOP Seniors No-Limit Hold'em champ and former police detective Dan LaCourse decided to take on Wasicka. LaCourse held {K-Clubs}{8-Clubs} for a club flush draw.

The turn was the {K-Diamonds} and the river the {10-Hearts}, and Wasicka doubled up to 17,000. LaCourse currently has 42,000.

Pat Pezzin Hits the River

Pat Pezzin - Day 1b
Pat Pezzin - Day 1b
Action folded around to Pat Pezzin in the cutoff seat and he moved all in for roughly 27,000. Andrew Ashbey called all in from the button for about 23,000 and the players showed:

Pezzin: {A-Clubs} {K-Hearts}
Ashbey: {J-Hearts} {J-Clubs}

It was a race situation with Pezzin needing to improve. It was Ashbey's tournament life on the line, but Pezzin would have been crippled had he lost.

The board came {9-Clubs} {3-Spades} {2-Spades} {Q-Hearts} {K-Diamonds} and Pezzin's rivered pair of kings took it down. He chipped up to approximately 50,000 and ended Ashbey's day in the process.

Deeb Continues To Grow

Earlier, we reported that Shaun Deeb doubled up. Most recently he was spotted picking up another big pot after flopping top pair with A-Q. The queen held up, with his opponent betting on the flop and turn. Deep is currently up to 38,000.

Hal Lubarsky and His Assistant

Hal Lubarsky and Assistant in Day 1b
Hal Lubarsky and Assistant in Day 1b
Hal Lubarsky is legally blind and uses an assistant who relays him the action. He has an interesting totem on his table. It's a ceramic paw print. The dog is a German shepherd named Nexus, who actually belongs to Hal's assistant. Before every hand, Hal touches the paw print for good luck.

It didn't help him enough in this hand. Lubarsky limps in the small blind and a middle-position player raises to 1,500. The button calls.

The flop is {J-Hearts}{9-Spades}{2-Hearts} and Lubarsky checks. The MP bets 3,150 and the button calls. Lubarsky raises to 10,150 and MP reraises all in for 29,275 more. The button folds and Lubarsky goes into the tank, eventually laying it down. Lubarsky has 50,300.

"They don't feel like that on the Internet!" says the dealer about the tense situation.

Nguyen Loses Some Ground

Jamie Avery raised to 1,000 from middle position. Phi Nguyen called from late position and the small blind called as well.

The flop came down {Q-Diamonds} {9-Spades} {2-Spades}. Small blind checked and Avery bet 2,000. Nguyen called and the small blind folded.

The turn was the {A-Spades} and Avery led for 3,500. Nguyen called.

The river was the {K-Clubs} and Avery bet 6,000. Nguyen made the call once again and then mucked his hand when he saw Avery's flush with the {8-Spades} {6-Spades}.

Nguyen is down to 10,000.

Ladies Unkind to Steven Spate

Steven Spate got into a raising war with Will Leffingwell that resulted in all of Spate's chips in the middle before the flop. The players showed:

Spate: {Q-Diamonds} {Q-Hearts}
Leffingwell: {A-Hearts} {J-Hearts}

The board ran out {J-Diamonds} {5-Diamonds} {3-Diamonds} {J-Spades} {3-Spades} giving Leffingwell the full house for the win. Spate's queens up were no good and he hit the rail.

Ace on the River...Not NOW

John Myung was all in before the flop with {A-Diamonds} {K-Diamonds} to his opponent's {7-Spades} {7-Hearts}. The {6-Hearts} {5-Spades} {4-Clubs} brought Myung no help and the {7-Clubs} on the river left him hoping for a chop if the board ended up making both players a straight. But on the river Myung got the {A-Spades} that he no longer wanted, and losing that pot dropped him to 11,600.

Deeb Doubles Up

Shaun Deeb raised from the cutoff and found a caller on the button. The flop fell {K-Spades} {4-Spades} {6-Clubs} and Deeb fired out 2,125. The button raised to 5,725 and Deeb moved all in. The button made the call and showed {J-Spades} {9-Spades} for a flush draw against Deeb's K-Q. The pair of kings held up for Deeb and after the hand he's up to 28,000.

Mark Burford Eliminated

Mark Burford was just bounced from the tournament when he came out on the wrong end of a coin flip. Burford took his {Q-Diamonds} {Q-Hearts} up against the {A-Clubs} {K-Clubs} of Darlene James and came up second best on the {A-Hearts} {3-Clubs} {2-Diamonds} {8-Spades} {J-Diamonds} board.
