Jeremiah Smith Earning a Lot

Here are the details on that recent hand involving Jeremiah Smith:

A player under the gun opened the action with a raise to 1,500. Smith and two other players made the call, and the four of them went to the flop.

It rolled out {10-Spades} {9-Spades} {8-Clubs}, and the initial raiser continued out with a bet of 4,000. The play was on Jeremiah Smith, and he bumped it up to 12,000, enough to force out the other two men in the hand. The under-the-gun player came back over the top, moving all in for approximately 40,000. Smith made the call, and the hands were turned up.

Jeremiah Smith had flopped a set with his {8-?} {8-?}, and had captured the lead against his opponent's {J-?} {J-?}. The player needed to catch one of his jacks or complete his open-ended straight draw to stay alive. The turn and river came {6-Diamonds} {6-Clubs}, though, and Smith's full house was the winner. He dragged in a nice chunk of chips, eliminated a player, and has moved up to 140,000, starting the day off in the right direction.

Gazes Grinding

Bill Gazes is trying to get something going on Orange #6. After taking a few small early hits, he announced to his table that he intended to triple up on the next hand. After a player raised to 1,300 from the button and was called by the small blind, Gazes reraised to 4,100 from the big blind. Both players folded.

A few hands later, Gazes bet 5,500 on the turn of a three-way pot with the board showing {9-Spades} {4-Spades} {2-Spades} {10-Diamonds}. That bet was enough to fold his two opponents and win Gazes another pot.

He has restored his stack to about 24,000.

Phillip Hilm Eliminated

No repeat final table for Hilm

Harold Cromwell limped in from middle position, Thomas Fougeron raised to 2,000, Phillip Hilm moved all in from the big blind, Cromwell flat-called, Fougeron moved all in over the top and Cromwell called all in.

Hilm {5-Clubs} {5-Spades}

Cromwell {K-Clubs} {K-Diamonds}

Fougeron {A-Clubs} {A-Spades}

The board ran out {9-Clubs} {7-Clubs} {2-Diamonds} {3-Diamonds} {4-Spades} and both Hilm and Cromwell were eliminated. Fougeron won the monster pot and is now up to 122,000.

Warne Bowls Over an Opponent

Preflop, Shane Warne bet 1,500 and received a call. On a flop of {8-Hearts} {6-Diamonds} {3-Hearts}, Warne bet out 2,000 and received a call. On the turn card of the {A-Hearts}, Warne bet out 6,000 and his opponent raised 20,000. Warne then moved all in and received a call.

Warne held {6-Hearts} {6-Clubs} and his opponent held {3-Spades} {3-Clubs}. The river fell the {K-Clubs} and Warne moved up to 82,000 in chips.

Jeremiah Smith Learning a Lot

Jeremiah Smith during Day 1a

Jeremiah Smith is a former poker media guy who used to be heavily involved with the late PokerWire. Now involved with production at Full Tilt, he's also got a ton of chips here during Day 2a.

"Just the chance to learn from guys like Allen Cunningham and Howard Lederer has been great," says Smith of his time with Full Tilt. "I'm just soaking it all up."

Jeremiah says he's already up 50 during the first hour, having flopped a flush and a set of eights. He's got 140,000.

Stuart Paterson Eliminated

After the player in the cutoff raised to 1,300 Paterson moved all in for his last 9,200 from the button. The small blind called and once the cutoff got out of the way Paterson learned that his {A-Diamonds} {10-Hearts} had run into the small blind's {Q-Hearts} {Q-Diamonds}.

The {10-Spades} {9-Diamonds} {J-Diamonds} gave Paterson some hope but the {8-Spades} on the turn gave his opponent the straight. Paterson needed a queen on the river for a chop but instead the {8-Clubs} fell and he was eliminated.

York Damaged

Horace York finds himself severely short-stacked after a recent encounter with Avi Cohen. With 4,000 chips in the pot preflop and the board showing {3-Spades} {3-Clubs} {J-Spades}, Cohen bet 2,500, then called when York raised to 5,500. On the turn {K-Hearts}, Cohen led out for 7,000, inducing a fold from York, who retains just 7,000 chips.

Stephan Gerin Doubles Through Steve Stolzmann

Bruce Hyde opened the pot for 1,200, Steve Stolzmann called from the cutoff, the button called and Stephan Gerin called from the big blind. The flop was {10-Hearts} {8-Diamonds} {8-Clubs}. Gerin led out for 2,600, Hyde folded, Stolzmann called and the button folded. The turn was the {K-Hearts}. Gerin bet 8,000, Stolzmann raised to 60,000 and Gerin called all in.

Gerin {7-Diamonds} {8-Diamonds}

Stolzmann {Q-Clubs} {Q-Diamonds}

The river was the {10-Clubs} and Gerin doubled up to 46,000 while Stolzman slipped to 46,500.

A Wrinkle in Time

When we started play today, we noticed that Scotty Nguyen was not in his seat. Forty minutes into the day, he has finally arrived. It seems that Nguyen went to the PokerStars party at Rain in the Palms last night, and someone there told him he didn't have to play until Wednesday.

Fast forward to noon today, which found Scotty blissfully asleep at his home. His wife woke him up and asked him why he wasn't at the Rio. It was then that he determined that yes, he was scheduled to play today.

He's in his seat now (and doesn't seem hung over).
