Thirty-Two Hopefuls Remain in the Heads-Up Championship

Level 33 : 2,000/4,000, 0 ante
Vanessa Selbst in contention with 32 players remaining
Vanessa Selbst in contention with 32 players remaining

After three exciting rounds of heads-up poker, the first day of the $10,000 Heads-Up No-Limit Hold'em has come to an end. There are 32 players remaining out of the 152-player field, all of whom are in the money. The day started with a short delay as many last-minute registrations were able to get into this event. After the draw was posted, 48 of the 152 players weren't amused as they had to play the first round. The remaining 104 players received a bye securing their seat in the second round.

Among the notable losers in the first round were Matt Marafioti, Sam Trickett, Jason Koon and Vanessa Rousso as Jason Mercier, Chris Moorman, David "Doc" Sands and Matt Perrins moved onto the next round. The real action started as the field got down to 128 and we had a full bracket of players to follow.

Sands, Phil Ivey and Justin Bonomo were among the first players to win their second round match while Andy Frankenberger, Shaun Deeb and Vladimir Shchemelev each busted. Today also marked the World Series of Poker debut of online superstar Viktor 'Isildur1' Blom who proved he could also play live during the 2012 PokerStars Caribbean Adventure when he won the $100,000 Super High Roller event banking just over $1.2 million. Blom beat Andy Bloch in the first round, but had to admit defeat in the second when he lost against Tommy Chen. Other notables that lost their second round match were Yevgeniy Timoshenko, Victor Ramdin, Erik Seidel and 2009 Heads-Up Championship winner Leo Wolpert.

With the field down to 64, all players had to win just one more match in order to cash for $10,966. Steven Landfish was the first player to reach the money when he beat Peter Jetten by rivering a straight against a turned set. Scott Baumstein didn't have a lot of trouble with Victor Ilyukhin, who called a big shove from Baumstein preflop with jack-ten. Baumstein watched his ace-deuce hold up and give him a seat in the fourth round. Richard Lyndaker took out the 2010 WSOP Player of the Year Frank Kassela. Lyndaker had flopped a straight when the money went in and Kassela's pair and gutshot couldn't catch up. We also said goodbye to 2010 Heads-Up Champion Ayaz Mahmood and 2011 Champion Jake Cody in the round of 64.

Daniel Negreanu beat Faraz Jaka in the second round and got another top opponent in the third matching up with heads-up specialist Jonathan Jaffe. Negreanu lost a big pot halfway through the match when both players had made a full house and the money went in on the river. He didn't recover and lost his last chips with fives against aces.

Other big names to make it to the round of 32 are Brian Hastings, Brock Parker, Eric Froehlich and Vanessa Selbst. The biggest upset came when Phil Ivey lost against the unknown Chae An. Ivey got it in good with ace-king against ace-seven, but a seven on the flop send him out the door.

We will come back tomorrow with the final 32 players and play until there are just four players remaining. The first round will take place at 1:00 PM local time followed by the second round at 4:00 PM and the final round at 7:00 PM. These are the payouts the remaining 32 will be fighting for.

Vanessa Selbst
Vanessa Selbst

Vanessa Selbst raised to 6,000 from the button and Jeffery Kester defended his big blind. The flop came down {Q-Spades}{7-Clubs}{9-Spades} and Kester moved all in for his final 19,000 chips. It took Selbst around five seconds to make the call and she showed {9-Diamonds}{5-Hearts}. Kester was trailing with {6-Diamonds}{7-Diamonds} and drawing dead on the {9-Hearts} turn. The river was the {K-Diamonds} and Selbst moved on to the next round.

Viktor 'Isildur1' Blom Busts His First WSOP Event

Viktor Blom
Viktor Blom

Viktor 'Isildur1' Blom has just been eliminated from the tournament by the hands of Tommy Chen. Today marked the debut on the World Series of Poker for the online super stars who had already made his mark on the live tournament circuit when he won the PCA Super High Roller banking just over $1.2 million. Blom had beat Andy Bloch in the first round but couldn't continue his run as he just busted.

Chen told us he put Blom all in from the button and the Swede snap-called for his final 26,000 chips in the 1,000/2,000 level with {J-Diamonds}{8-Diamonds}. "I guess it's an unexploitable call, but I would never make it," Chen said about the move. Chen had {Q-Diamonds}{6-Diamonds} and his hand held up.

Esfandiari Beats Haxton

Antonio Esfandiari
Antonio Esfandiari

Antonio Esfandiari just beat Isaac Haxton heads up. In the 400/800 level we caught a hand in which Haxton raised the button to 1,600 and Esfandiari called. The flop came down {7-Spades}{7-Clubs}{3-Diamonds} and Esfandiari check-called a 2,100 chip bet. The turn was the {4-Spades} and Esfandiari check-called 5,200. The river was the {5-Spades} and both players checked. Esfandiari showed {A-Spades}{2-Clubs} and took down the pot.

We ran over to the table as both players got up from their seats and Esfandiari told us what happened in the final hand. "I raised the button to 2,200 and he called," Esfandiari started his explanation. The flop came down {J-Spades}{7-Diamonds}{5-Diamonds} and Esfandiari's 3,400 continuation bet got raised to 6,400. Esfandiari put Haxton all in for 10,000 more and he called with {9-Diamonds}{7-Hearts}. Esfandiari showed {8-Spades}{8-Diamonds} and the turn, the {K-Diamonds}, and river, the {2-Hearts}, didn't change the outcome.

"See one of you fish cakes soon!" Esfandiari said laughingly to Mercier and Godshall. One of these players will be his next opponent.

Haxton Wins Final First Round Match

Isaac Haxton
Isaac Haxton

We are down to 128! The final first round match just finished with Isaac Haxton beating Daniel Morgen. In the final hand Morgan min-raised from the button and Haxton moved all in. Morgan called and after counting down the stack both players were dead even in chips. This was gonna be the final hand no matter what! Well, they could still chop of course but that's not a very likely scenario.

Haxton showed {A-Diamonds}{10-Hearts} against Morgan's {K-Diamonds}{9-Clubs} and the board ran out {4-Clubs}{Q-Spades}{4-Hearts}{A-Clubs}{J-Clubs} giving Haxton a pair of aces and the win. "Good game man, you played well," Haxton complimented his opponent who said, "Cheers man," as he walked away.

Play will resume at 4:00 PM local time with the second round. We are going to play three rounds today getting the field down to 32 players. Players who survive this day will be in the money.

Froehlich's Suggestion to the WSOP

Level 7 : 600/1,200, 0 ante

Upon winning his match, Eric Froehlich had a suggestion for the tournament staff on how to handle the fact that so many players have been getting byes in these heads-up events. Here's what Froehlich suggested and we'll use this event for an example.

With 152 players signing up for the event and 128 needed for the next round, 104 players were granted first-round byes and 48 players had to play what was essentially a "play-in match" into the tournament. Froehlich suggested that those 48 players each get a $5,000 refund (half of their buy-in) because they are stuck playing an extra match. This makes this extra match a satellite of sorts into the tournament.

Another thing this would do is allow a smaller percentage of the field to be paid out. In this case, 32 players are going to be paid and some of the players feel a min-cash just isn't worth it. If Froehlich's suggestion was used, the real field size would be 128 and thus 16 players paid out, making the money mean a lot more when you get there and also more up top for the winner.

The tournament director on site that Froehlich voiced this suggestion to seemed very receiving and mentioned he'd pass on the word to the appropriate authories, which is World Series of Poker Tournament Director Jack Effel. We'll let you know if anything comes of this in the future.

Green Busts Koon

Jason Koon
Jason Koon

Jason Koon, runner up in the $3,000 Heads-Up No-Limit Hold'em/Pot-Limit Omaha event, just lost his first round match against Brian Green. Was was kind enough to give us the details of the match that almost went his way. Koon explained he was down early but managed to chip up giving him a 42,000-18,000 chip lead on the 400/800 level.

"I min-raised to 1,600 on the button and that sweetheart called," Koon started his story of the hand that could've ended the match. The flop came down {J-}{9-}{6-} with two clubs and Green checked to Koon who bet 2,000. "He just moved all in for like 16,300," Koon laughed as he made the call with {J-Spades}{8-Spades}. He was up against {J-}{5-} and a {5-} hit the turn right away turning the tables on this match.

In the 500/1,000 level Koon was down to 18,000 and Green raised the button to 2,500. Koon moved all in and Green called with {K-}{Q-}. Koon showed {A-Spades}{9-Diamonds} and didn't manage to survive. Green moves on to the second round.
