Shulman Loses One, Then Splits One

Level 6

Stud Eight or Better

Jeff Shulman has been very active at his table, but his chip stack is remaining relatively constant. We recently watched him play two hands.

On the first, we arrived at the table on sixth street with Shulman showing {4-Spades}{9-Clubs}{10-Hearts}{4-Diamonds} and his opponent showing {2-Hearts}{7-Spades}{2-Diamonds}{4-Hearts}. Both players checked. On seventh street Shulman checked his paired board and his opponent bet 600. Shulman made the call, and his opponent revealed {7-Hearts}{7-Clubs}{3-Hearts} for a full house. Shulman mucked, and his opponent scooped the pot.

On the very next hand, a player showing {q-Spades} completed on third street, Valentin Vornicu called with a {3-Hearts}, and Shulman called with an {8-Spades}. On fourth street, the original bettor continued, now showing {q-Spades}{7-Hearts}, Vornicu folded, and Shulman called with {8-Spades}{6-Diamonds}. The bettor received the {3-Spades} on fifth street and bet again. Shulman called again with {9-Spades}. On sixth street, with his board now reading {q-Spades}{7-Hearts}{3-Spades}{4-Clubs}, the original bettor led out again, but this time Shulman raised, showing {8-Spades}{6-Diamonds}{9-Spades}{2-Diamonds}. His opponent called, then checked his river card. Shulman bet out, but his opponent raised. Shulman called and the players showed their cards:

Jeff Shulman: {a-Diamonds}{3-Clubs}{5-Spades}/{8-Spades}{6-Diamonds}{9-Spades}{2-Diamonds}
Opponent: {k-Clubs}{q-Hearts}{q-Diamonds}/{q-Spades}{7-Hearts}{3-Spades}{4-Clubs}

Shulman won the low with his 6-high, and his opponent won the high with three queens. After the two hands, Shulman sits with 5,300.
