Welcome to our coverage of Event #37: $5,000 Limit Hold'em here at the 2013 World Series of Poker. This is the highest buy in limit-hold'em event offered this year and will serve as the unofficial championship of this variant. Benjamin Scholl was able to conquer the field in 2012 to acquire the gold bracelet and the $206,670 that accompanied a first-place finish.

Last year this event saw a grand total of 166 runners show up for play and 109 of them moved on from Day 1 to the second day of play. As always in the higher buy in events, the field was stacked with the likes of Jeff Shulman, Jesse Martin, Matt Glantz, and Matt Woodward all making the final table.

As is standard with WSOP events, players will being with three-times the buy in for starting stack which means players will have 15,000 in chips to start the day. Players will play eight full levels before bagging and tagging and hopefully heading into Day 2.

We're expecting an exciting field packed full of the biggest names in poker today, so be sure to stay tuned here on PokerNews as we present you with all of the latest from the tournament floor!

Plenty of Extras Being Given Away At This Year's WSOP

The buzz inside the walls of the Rio extends beyond just the tournaments on the 2013 World Series of Poker schedule. Online poker in Nevada is a very, very hot topic right now, and WSOP.com is making a lot of noise.

While the site has yet to launch, you can head to the Lambada Room of the Rio or look for one of the beautiful and friendly WSOP.com ladies walking the hallways to sign up for a free, personal WSOP.com online poker account. This is a great way to get a jump on the site's registration, and plenty of people have already taken this opportunity.

What's more is that the WSOP will be hosting daily raffles for everyone that has taken the time to register for WSOP.com at the Rio. What can you win? Plenty of fantastic prizes including 36 WSOP seats!

Players 21 years of age and older who sign up for a WSOP.com account will automatically be entered into the “36-Seat Giveaway” where a randomly-selected winner will win a seat into the next day’s first WSOP gold bracelet event. One of the events eligible in this promotion is the $111,111 One Drop High Roller No-Limit Hold’em tournament that is expected to feature a $10,000,000 prize pool and allow you to play poker with the biggest names in the game. In total, $182,333 in WSOP seats, including a seat to the WSOP Main Event, are being given away during this one-of-a-kind WSOP.com promotion.

In addition to the 36-Seat Giveaway, a “Hot Seat” promotion will allow any player who signs up for a WSOP.com online account and wears their WSOP.com patch on their chest at the table while playing an event to be randomly selected to receive 500 bonus dollars deposited directly into their WSOP.com online account once the site has received all regulatory approvals and launches.

With 62 WSOP gold bracelet events and three winners promised for the Main Event, this promotion includes $32,000 worth of value to those participating.

Limit Hold'em Bracelet Winner Meinders Among the Field

Level 1 : 200/400, 0 ante
Brian Meinders Winning 2012 $1,500 Limit Hold'em Shootout
Brian Meinders Winning 2012 $1,500 Limit Hold'em Shootout

While perusing the tournament area early on, we spotted a bracelet winner from last year, Brian Meinders, seated among the field. Meinders should be one to watch throughout this event as his single bracelet is in Limit Hold'em.

One year ago at the 2012 WSOP, Meinders was able to conquer a field of 365 runners to win Event #25, $1,500 Limit Hold'em Shootout. In theory, it sounds like one of the more easy bracelets to win, as Meinders merely had to defeat three tables in order to find the gold on his wrist. However, this field was stacked to the brim with poker's elite and winning three-straight tables against a stacked field was no small task. Meinder's final table included the likes of Chris Vitch, Darin Thomas, Brock Parker, and Victor Ramdin. Despite these obstacles, Meinders was able to use his limit-hold'em know-how to rise above and defeat the field.

Will Meinders be able to do the same today? Only time will tell, but as a bracelet holder in this game, he is certainly one to watch as the tournament progresses.

A Look at Last Year's Final Table

Level 1 : 200/400, 0 ante
Benjamin Scholl
Benjamin Scholl

We're suckers for history, plus it's the first level in a limit tournament, which is why we thought we'd take a quick look back at last year's final table. Many of the 2012 finalists are already in the field, and we expect a few more of them will be making an appearance before night's end.

Here's a look back at last year's final table action courtesy of that event's live blog recap:

Leading the final table was prominent player Jeff Shulman and the talk of the town was the fact that Jeff’s father Barry Shulman was simultaneously on the final table of Event 19: $1,500 No-Limit Hold’em. Jeff would end up doing better than his father, who finished in 8th place, but that’s jumping ahead.

The first player to hit the rail at the final table was Ayman Qutami in 9th place, with his exit followed closely by Nicholas Derke in 8th. It was Andrew Prock who eliminated both of these players and so it was he who stole the chip lead from Shulman. However, Shulman managed to get the lead back as Matthew Woodward was eliminated in 7th place, Matt Glantz bit the dust in 6th and Raymond Dehkharghani in 5th.

Shulman’s four-handed chip lead wouldn’t last for long as Jesse Martin’s elimination in 4th place would also see Shulman’s stack start to dwindle. Shulman was almost down and out a few times, but clawed on to life multiple times to make a comeback. Shulman hung on to dear life as three-handed play marched on for multiple hours. Eventually Shulman's run would come to an end though, as he found the rail in 3rd place.

Going into heads-up, Benjamin Scholl held an almost four-to-one chip lead and it wouldn't take him long to overcome Andrew Prock. Eventually the last hand of the night played out and with that, Prock went home as the gallant runner-up, while Scholl takes home his first WSOP gold bracelet.

Matros Looks to Tie Record

Level 1 : 200/400, 0 ante
Matt Matros
Matt Matros

In a field packed with famous players, sometimes less famous faces get lost in the crowd. One player, though, who definitely should not be overlooked is Matt Matros.

Matros has won World Series bracelets in each of the past three years, and is currently looking to tie the record of four consecutive years with a WSOP win, currently held by both the legendary Doyle Brunson and Bill Boyd. Even if he is unable to win a fourth piece of WSOP hardware this year, Matros is already in an exclusive club, as only ten players have won WSOP events three years in a row.

This event is an excellent opportunity for Matros to tie Brunson and Boyd’s record. Though he doesn’t consider himself a limit hold’em specialist, there is no denying he’s had immense success in the game. His first bracelet came in a limit hold’em event, and he currently sits eighth on the all-time list for WSOP limit hold’em earnings ($ 574,758).

PokerNews will keep you apprised of Matros’ progress as he vies for his fourth bracelet against this top-notch field.
