Event #4: $1,500 No-Limit Hold'em (Six Handed)

Day 2 Started

Nine Players to Leave Empty Handed Here on Day 2 of Event #4 $1,500 No-Limit Hold’em /Six Handed

Greg Hobson starts Day 2 as the chip leader!
Greg Hobson starts Day 2 as the chip leader!

On Friday, 1,069 players packed the Brasilia Room here at the Rio for the 2013 World Series of Poker Event #4 $1,500 No-Limit Hold’em /Six Handed, which created a prize pool of $1,443,150 that will be distributed to the top 108 players. That means we need to lose just nine players here today before the money is reach as 117 players will return for Day 2 action with Greg Hobson and his stack of 160,500 leading the way. A little further behind is 2009 WSOP Main Event champ Joe Cada, who holds 127,000 and is seeking his second gold bracelet.

While Hobson and Cada have the best chances of making a deep run, there are plenty of accomplished players returning to the Amazon Room today to stand in their way. Among them are Keven Stammen (112,800), who sits third in chips with 112,800; WSOP Asia Pacific bracelet winner Bryan Piccioli (85,000); Wisconsin pro and former WSOP POY contender Eddie Blumenthal (60,100); WSOP Circuit Harrah’s Philadelphia Main Event champ Rex Clinkscales (52,700); British pro and WSOP bracelet winner Craig McCorkell (48,200); World Poker Tour Season XI Player of the Year Matt Salsberg (45,500); 2010 WSOP Main Event champ Jonathan Duhamel (45,200); and Larry Ormson (44,700), who is working on a chip-and-a-chair story of his own.

You see, on Day 1 Ormson, a successful business owner from Elroy, Wisconsin who is transitioning into the poker world, was down to just 175 in chips in Level 3, which was just one big and small blind. Incredibly Ormson was able to work that back up to 17,000 in just six hands! While he’s not one of the big stacks, Ormson is primed for a cash and could easily make a run at the title. If he does, it’d know doubt be one of the most captivating stories from the opening week of the 2013 WSOP.

Action will recommence in Level 11 and is scheduled to either play ten levels or down to a final table—whatever may come first. We’re guessing it’ll be the former, so settle in for a long day of play. Action is set to kick off at 1 p.m. PST, which is about an hour from now. Join us then as we bring you the latest and greatest from Event #4 $1,500 No-Limit Hold’em /Six Handed.

Mcnamee Doubles in Back-to-Back Hands

Level 11 : 500/1,000, 100 ante

What a start for young Andrew Mcnamee. He began the day with just 9,200 and is already more than quadruple that thanks to two big hands against Maurice Hawkins.

In the first, Hawkins opened from the cutoff and then called when Mcnamee moved all in for 8,800 from the big blind. Hawkins held the {K-Spades}{J-Spades} but was behind the {A-Diamonds}{9-Spades} of Mcnamee. The {j-Diamonds}{a-Hearts}{3-Hearts} flop gave Hawkins a pair of jacks, but it kept Mcnamee in the lead by pairing his ace. Neither the {Q-Diamonds} turn nor {5-Diamonds} river helped Hawkins and Mcnamee doubled to around 19,000.

In the very next hand, Hawkins opened for 2,500 from the hijack and Matt Salsberg and Allen Pock called from the cutoff and button respectively. Mcnamee then moved all in from the small blind, Hawkins called and the other two players got out of the way.

Mcnamee: {K-Spades}{K-Hearts}
Hawkins: {A-Diamonds}{Q-Diamonds}

"It's a good spot for that," Hawkins told Mcnamee. The {10-Hearts}{5-Spades}{j-Hearts} flop left Hawkins calling for an ace or king, but he was left wanting as the dealer put out the {3-Diamonds} on the turn followed by the {4-Spades} on the river.

Duhamel Thriving Early

Level 11 : 500/1,000, 100 ante

We found action folded around to Jonathan Duhamel in the small blind. He raised it to 2,500 only to find his opponent in the big blind make it 6,800 to go. Duhamel then tanked for a bit before cutting out a four-bet to 14,200.

Duhamel's opponent let it go and the WSOP champion took down the pot. He's having a stellar performance early in the day and has increased his stack to around 65,000.

Newman Adds Chips

Level 11 : 500/1,000, 100 ante

Wsop quilifier Stewart Newman came in to today excited. He won his seat to this tournament on wsop.com and is already one of the leaders. He recently added some few more chips in help of getting us closer to the money. Newman just knocked out Nikola Fustar when his {9-Spades}{9-Hearts} beat out Fuster {a-Clubs}{q-Diamonds} and the board ran out {8-Hearts}{3-Clubs}{6-Hearts}{5-Clubs}{2-Clubs}. Newman should be a dangerous opponent as we head into the money.
