Mercier No Longer Peaking

Level 13 : 5,000/10,000, 1,000 ante
Jason Mercier
Jason Mercier

Two-time World Series of Poker gold bracelet winner Jason Mercier had just tweeted about how he was peaking in this event with his chip stack up to 700,000. Well, thanks to Tobias Reinkemeier, he is no longer peaking. In fact, Reinkemeier knocked him all the way back down to under the starting stack amount.

From under the gun, Mercier opened with a raise to 20,000. A couple seats over, Reinkemeier reraised to 41,000, and action folded back around the table to Mercier. Mercier made the call to see the dealer roll out the {K-Spades}{Q-Hearts}{2-Hearts} on the flop. Following a check from Mercier, Reinkemeier fired a bet of 40,000. Mercier wasted little time in making the call to see the turn.

Fourth street was the {4-Spades}, and Mercier checked again. Reinkemeier stayed on the gas and put more pressure on his opponent with a bet of 107,000. Mercier made the call.

Then, the dealer completed the board with the {3-Hearts}. Mercier checked, and Reinkemeier sat motionless for a few brief moments before asking Mercier how much he was playing. Mercier responded nonverbally by moving his hands out of the way so Reinkemeier could see his stack. Then, Reinkemeier double-fisted two tall towers of chips for a bet of 225,000. Mercier tanked, and eventually confirmed the bet amount before making the call.

Reinkemeier turned up the {A-Diamonds}{A-Hearts} after Mercier called, and Mercier mucked his hand unable to produce better. Reinkemeier collected the pot and moved to over 1 million in chips. Mercier dropped back to 280,000.

Steven Runner-Runners Flush to Eliminate Behbehani

Level 13 : 5,000/10,000, 1,000 ante

Salman Behbehani got his stack of 134,000 all in preflop holding the {a-Clubs}{k-Clubs} and was well out in front of Brandon Steven's {a-Spades}{5-Spades}. According to the PokerNews Odds Calculator, Behbehani was a 67.66% favorite while Steven only had a 28.03% chance or coming from behind.

The {3-Hearts}{j-Spades}{7-Hearts} flop made Behbehani a 77.68% favorite and left Steven, whose percentage dropped to 19.70%, in need of either a five or running cards. The {Q-Spades} turn was one of the cards Steven needed and his flush draw brought his chances up to 27.27%. That meant 72.73% of the time Behbehani would survive, but this was not one of those times as the {9-Spades} spiked on the river to give Steven the flush.

Clock!

Level 13 : 5,000/10,000, 1,000 ante

Overall, the play in this tournament has been, in a word, slow. Very slow, in fact.

Yesterday, we saw a 20-minute hand which included a 15-minute tank from Greg Mueller, and it isn't uncommon for there to be several minutes of tanking on each street in this tournament.

Moments ago, Raymond Faltinsky, the CEO and co-founder of FreeLife International, said enough is enough and finally called the clock.

It was in a hand with Ben Lamb, Chris Lee, and Eugene Katchalov. After all three players had checked on a flop of {3-Diamonds}{7-Spades}{5-Spades}, the turn brought the {4-Hearts}. Lamb led out for 35,000, Lee called, and Katchalov raised to 110,000. Lamb folded, and Lee went into the tank. After over two minutes, Faltinsky called the clock.

"It's too long," Faltinsky said.

"That's what she said," quipped David Sands.

Before the floor could even arrive, Lee called, and the {10-Clubs} completed the board. Both players checked, Lee showed {k-Spades}{9-Spades} for a missed flush draw, and Katchalov raked in the pot with {7-Hearts}{7-Diamonds} for a set of sevens.

"Couldn't Leave my Soldier Out There to Die"

Level 13 : 5,000/10,000, 1,000 ante
Dee Tiller on Day 1
Dee Tiller on Day 1

We happened upon an interesting hand with 170,000 or so already pulled into the pot and a board reading {7-Diamonds}{j-Diamonds}{j-Clubs}{a-Clubs}{k-Hearts}. Dan Perper was in middle position and contemplating a big bet of 275,000 from Dee Tiller on the button.

We're not sure how long Perper had been thinking, but we arrived just in time to hear Tiller say, "Good call."

Perper hadn't acted yet and it was Tiller's way of throwing his opponent off his game. It appeared to do the trick as Perper, who had chips in his hand, set them down, leaned back in his chair and stated that the comment was off.

A few moments later Tiller added, "Clock, he was never gonna call."

The floor arrived to begin the one-minute countdown and about 30 seconds in Perper released his hand.

"I didn't want you to call," Tiller said with a big smile as he showed the {6-Diamonds}{4-Diamonds} for a missed flush. "I couldn't leave my soldiers out there to die."

Perkins with No Ship Juice

Level 13 : 5,000/10,000, 1,000 ante
Bill Perkins (Day 1)
Bill Perkins (Day 1)

From middle position, Byron Kaverman raised to 20,000. Bill Perkins made the call from the hijack seat moments after hugging his friend and fell player David Einhorn who had just taken the seat next to him. Action then folded to Andrew Robl in the big blind, he tanked, then three-bet to 90,000. Kaverman got out of the way rather quickly, but Perkins wanted to think for a bit. Eventually, he too have it up, and Robl won the pot.

"I was either shipping or folding," commented Perkins to Robl after releasing his hand. "I had no ship juice."

"You had no ship juice?" asked Einhorn with a smile.

"Nope, no ship juice," responded Perkins.

"Do they sell that at the cafeteria?" asked Einhorn to Perkins.

"Good question," answered Perkins. "I may need to go get some."

Thuritz Three-Bets Big, Folds Short

Level 13 : 5,000/10,000, 1,000 ante

Action folded to Jean-Robert Bellande in the cutoff seat, and he raised the action up to 24,000. In the next seat was Mikael Thuritz on the button. Thuritz reraised to 102,000 with 65,000 behind. Bellande took his time, then called.

The flop came down {K-Spades}{9-Clubs}{8-Clubs}, and both players checked to see the {5-Spades} land on the turn. Bellande moved enough chips forward to put Thuritz all in. Thuritz folded, and Bellande won the pot.
