Shaun on Shawn Crime

Level 9

Limit Hold'em

Shawn Buchanan check-raised Shaun Deeb on a board of {9-Clubs}{6-Hearts}{2-Clubs}{5-Hearts} and Deeb made the call. The {4-Hearts} completed the board, Buchanan led out, and Deeb raised. Buchanan called, then mucked when Deeb tabled {a-Hearts}{8-Hearts} for a flush.

Glantz Careful with Luneau

Level 9

Pot-Limit Omaha

Matt Glantz took his time before making the call of a 20,000-chip bet from Alexandre Luneau on a {9-Clubs}{6-Clubs}{8-Clubs}{10-Hearts} board. He then checked the {q-Spades} river and Leneau did as well.

"Straight," said Glantz, turning over {a-Hearts}{7-Spades}{5-Clubs}{9-Hearts} as Luneau mucked.

No Three-Peat for the Grinder

Michael Mizrachi
Michael Mizrachi

Razz

Back in 2010, Michael "The Grinder" Mizrachi topped a field of 116 players to win this very event for $1,276,806. Two years later, he would emerge victorious over a 108-player field to win the title for the second time (the only player to do so) and $1,451,527. Mizrachi was no doubt hoping to make three times out of the past five years, but that possibility just ended when he was eliminated by John Juanda.

Mizrachi had been nursing a short-stack when he raised over Juanda's completion in razz. Juanda three-bet, Mizrachi got it all in, and the cards were turned up.

Juanda: {3-}{4-} / {a-}{5-}{q-}{3-} / {2-}
Mizrachi: {5-}{3-} / {7-}{6-}{7-}{7-} / {4-}

Both players received good cards on fourth, but not so much on fifth. Mizrachi tripped up on sixth, but Juanda paired. That meant Juanda's queen low was best, but Mizrachi could easily improve.

"Go first, John," Mizrachi instructed. Juanda did and tabled a {2-} for the wheel. It took away the sweat as Mizrachi, who received a {4-}, was drawing dead.

"Good luck, guys," a deflated Mizrachi said before taking his leave from the tournament. That leaves Brian Rast and David Bach as former champions still in the field.

Benson Takes One from Ivey

Level 9

Pot-Limit Omaha

Phil Ivey raised before the flop to 6,000 and Gary Benson called from the big blind. The flop came down {9-Diamonds}{8-Hearts}{4-Clubs} and Ivey bet 9,000 after Benson had checked. The Australian player check-raised to 40,000 and that was enough to get Ivey to fold his hand.

Alaei Drags A Big One

Level 9

Pot-Limit Omaha

On the button, Daniel Alaei joined Alex Bilokur in calling a Calvin Anderson open of 4,500. The flop came {q-Spades}{5-Clubs}{a-Clubs} and Anderson led out for 12,000 with only Alaei making the call. The turn brought the {9-Spades} and a 27,000-chip bet from Anderson, which Alaei called.

Finally, on the {k-Hearts} river, Anderson fired 20,000 chips, but Alaei would not go away. Anderson showed {j-Clubs}{9-Hearts}{7-Clubs}{6-Hearts} but Alaei's {a-Spades}{k-Diamonds}{j-Diamonds}{7-Spades} was the superior hand.

One For Israelashvili

Level 9

Limit Hold'em

Roland Israelashvili checked on a {A-Diamonds}{J-Hearts}{10-Diamonds} flop after which Lyle Berman bet and Richard Ashby called. Israelashvili check-raised, Berman called and Ashby decided to throw his hand into the muck.

The turn brought the {K-Hearts} and both players checked. The river was the {7-Hearts} and Iraelashvili bet, Berman called. Israelashvili showed {A-Clubs}{K-Clubs} and he took down this pot.

Lisandro Climbing Back to Starting Stack

Level 9

Razz

Jeff Lisandro: {x-}{x-} / {4-}{2-}{a-}{k-} / {x-}
Marco Johnson: {x-}{x-} / {7-}{a-}{3-}{a-} / {x-}

Josh Arieh brought it in with the {10-Spades}, Lisandro completed, and Johnson was his only caller. Lisandro check-called a bet from Johnson on fourth street, both players checked on fifth, and when Johnson paired on sixth, Lisandro led out. Johnson called.

Lisandro fired out another bet on seventh, Johnson called, and the 2009 WSOP Player of the Year revealed {q-}{7-}{5-} for a seven-five. Johnson mucked.
