Day 1 of Event #43: 1,000 Super Seniors, a tournament that requires participant to be 65 years of age or older, wasn't expected to draw a huge crowd; after all, how many elder statesmen would turn out for a first-time event. Plenty as it turns out; in fact, even the wildest expectations were surpassed as 1,533 players created a $1,379,700 prize pool, of which $262,220 will go to the eventual winner.

After 10 levels of play, Henry Hannigan of Morris, Illinois bagged up the biggest stack among the 253 survivors with 115,000 in chips. The only other players to break the six-figure mark were Robert Galinson (110,200) and Dennis Waterman (103,600). The top 171 players will be paid a minimum of $1,821.

Others who bagged and tagged on Day 1 were Charles "Woody" Moore (78,100), Perry Green (42,600), Dan Harrington (39,400), Vince Burgio (32,100), Barry Shulman (28,800), Artie Cobb (28,100), and Julius Colman (24,900).

Of course not everyone was so lucky. Among those to fall on Day 1 were Wayne "Tilly" Tyler, Tom McEvoy, TJ Cloutier, Steve Zolotow, and Doyle Brunson, who was making his 2015 WSOP debut.

According to updates from the event, Brunson late registered after the dinner break, but didn't last too long. He got his chips in holding the {a-Hearts}{10-Hearts} on a {k-Clubs}{5-Hearts}{9-Hearts} flop but failed to get there against Whit Brayton, who had flopped top pair with {k-}{q-}. Unfortunately Brayton would not survive the night.
