Michael Moore Leads 43 Players After Day 1 of $10,000 Limit Hold'em Championship

Level 10 : 1,500/3,000, 0 ante
Michael Moore
Michael Moore

Day 1 of Event #52: $10,000 Limit Hold'em Championship has come to an end after 10 levels of play and it's Michael Moore leading the way with 268,500. It was a steady climb for much of the day for Moore and he took a big pot from Ray Henson late in the night to secure the chip lead.

Joao Vieira sits in second with 211,000 and Nick Schulman rounds out the top three Day 1 chip stacks with 202,000. Schulman was one of the last entries of the night, taking his seat after the final break, and he wasted no time putting those chips to work and running it up.

Mike Leah was the last Day 1 entry after finishing 7th in the WSOP $10,000 Pot Limit Omaha event. Leah took his seat with just 20 minutes left in the night but more than doubled his starting stack bagging 125,000.

There was plenty of action on the first day of play and, as the hefty price tag would suggest, plenty of big names that entered. Many of them fell by the wayside, including Daniel Negreanu, who was among the first wave of players to hit the rail when he was sent home by his old friend Kevin Song. Erik Siedel, Shaun Deeb and James Obst soon followed. Defending champion Joe McKeehen lasted less than one level of play before being eliminated as well.

JC Tran was sitting behind a healthy stack for much of the night but he was eliminated with less than 30 minutes left in the night.

In total, there were 101 entries on Day 1 and 43 will be returning to Amazon Tan on Tuesday, June 26 at 2 P.M. local time for the second of three days. Tournament registration will remain open till the start of Day 2 so there's still plenty of time to get in on the action. Like every WSOP event, PokerNews will be covering this one wire-to-wire, so be sure to check back in regularly for all updates of the 2018 World Series of Poker.

Henson Not Slowing Down

Level 8 : 1,300/2,500, 0 ante
Ray Henson

Tommy Rounds raised from the hijack and Ray Henson three-bet from the cutoff. It folded back to Henson who called and they went heads-up to the {10-Clubs}{4-Clubs}{2-Diamonds} flop.

Rounds check-called a bet from Henson and the dealer burned and turned the {j-Diamonds}. Again Rounds check-called a bet from Henson and the river was the {5-Clubs}. Rounds checked and Henson threw out another bet to get an instant fold from Rounds.

Henson added another pot to his mountain of chips and he's distanced himself well out in front of the field with about 290,000.

Negreanu Eliminated by Song

Level 7 : 1,000/2,000, 0 ante
Daniel Negreanu
Daniel Negreanu

Daniel Negreanu was nursing a short stack and now has lost all of his chips. JC Tran made it two bets and saw his neighbor Kevin Song raise to three bets. The player in the two-seat called and Negreanu pushed all-in. Tran made it four bets and Song and the two-seat both called.

The flop was {4-Clubs}{9-Spades}{J-Clubs} and Tran checked to Song who put out a bet. Both players called and the {10-Hearts} turn was dealt. Tran checked to Song again and after he put out a bet the two-seat and Tran both folded.

Song opened up {Q-Spades}{Q-Diamonds} and Negreanu said "I have queen-eight. I swear I have a queen-eight straight!" After ten seconds he opened up {3-Hearts}{2-Hearts} and the dealer completed the board by putting down the {6-Diamonds} river.

One table over, Kahle Burns also stood up from his seat and walked away from the tournament with no more chips on the table.

Obst Climbing Back

Level 5 : 600/1,200, 0 ante
James Obst
James Obst

James Obst has been below the starting stack since early in the tournament, but it seems as if he's fighting his way back to the 50,000 chip mark. Obst made it two bets preflop from late position and the player in the small blind called, as did Scott Mayfield from the big blind.

The flop came down {7-Clubs}{8-Diamonds}{8-Clubs} and the player in the small blind led out with a bet. Mayfield folded and Obst decided to make it two bets again. The player in the small blind called.

The turn was the {3-Clubs} and the flop action was repeated. There was a bet, Obst put in two, and his opponent called again. Both checked on the {5-Diamonds} river and after his opponent showed {Q-Clubs}{J-Spades} for queen high, Obst showed {A-Spades}{9-Clubs} for the winning hand with ace high.

Aces Full for Negreanu

Daniel Negreanu
Daniel Negreanu

The under-the-gun player raised and Daniel Negreanu reraised from middle position. It folded back to the original raiser who called and they went heads up to the {a-Spades}{9-Clubs}{6-Spades} flop.

The player check-called a bet from Negreanu and the turn was the {9-Diamonds}. The player check-called a bet once again and he did the same when the {10-Spades} hit the river.

Negreanu turned over his {a-Hearts}{a-Diamonds} for aces full of nines to scoop the pot.
