A total of 1,015 poker players packed the tables in the opening event of the 2023 World Series of Poker here at Horseshoe and Paris Las Vegas, with 89 players bagging for Day 2.

After 17 levels of play, Benson Tam bagged the chip lead (880,000), with PokerNews' own Jesse Fullen bagging the second biggest stack (861,000). James Urbanic
James Urbanic

James Urbanic was raking in a massive pot over 620,000 whenPokernews approached the table.

A patchwork of excited explanations from the table shed some light on Urbanic's massive boon.

A limp in early position kicked off the action before a raise to 22,000 from late position somehow led to a four-way flop of 973. The preflop raiser ended up betting and was met with the shove of Urbanic while the other two opponents folded.

Warren came back with a big all-in raise, covering his opponent's roughly 200,000 chip stack, and after a couple of minutes got a call.

Warren showed 44 for a flopped full house, while his opponent showed JJ for an overpair.

Following the 22 runout, the massive pot was shipped to Warren who now has one of the largest stacks in the room.

Katie Kopp Falls Short of Back-to-Back Bracelet Glory

Level 15 : Blinds 3,000/5,000, 5,000 ante
Katie Kopp
Katie Kopp

As we approached the money bubble reigning champion Katie Kopp was forced all in by the mandatory post of the big blind. Consequently, Michael Liang limped on the button and Mario Romera completed out of the small blind putting Kopp at risk.

The board ran out AKJ103 as both Romera and Liang checked down on every street.

Liang was first to table K2 for second pair which was good enough to beat both Romera's Jx6x and Kopp's 84.

The back-to-back bracelet dream for Kopp was over as she busts two players away from the money.

After Shannon Stash limped in middle position, James Urbanic completed his small blind and Wade Warren checked his big blind.

On the A54 flop, action checked to Stash who bet 9,000, which got called by both opponents.

The trio checked through the A turn, but on the 2 river, Urbanic led out for 30,000. Warren raised to 83,000 and Stash called.

With action back on Urbanic, he just called, recognizing that his opponent could have exactly what he did, the 3.

Warren showed his 103 for a straight flush, while Urbanic showed his A5 for a rarely losing full house.
