Axel Hallay Mounts a Miraculous Comeback to Dominate Day 2 of the $25,000 6-Max High Roller

Level 18 : Blinds 40,000/80,000, 80,000 ante

The old poker saying is “a chip and a chair,” and it certainly rang true for Axel Hallay on Day 2 of Event #2: $25,000 High Roller 6-Handed No-Limit Hold’em.

Hallay was knocked down to just 40,000 early in the day. He ended it as the overwhelming chip leader with 7,980,000, nearly twice as much as his closest challenger. The French pro was already a top stack before he emerged victorious in the biggest pot of the day, winning with a set of aces to decimate the stack of Bin Weng.

Hallay would have finished with even more chips if not for a little luck from the player in second place on the chip leaderboard. Chris Moore was all in and down to two outs on the river against Hallay but hit his miracle card to double up. Another double-up near the night's end saw Moore finish up with 4,455,000.

A star-studded final nine players will return on June 1 at 1:30 p.m. inside the Horseshoe and Paris Las Vegas to play down to a champion.

Joey Weissman (4,150,000), Jake Schindler (1,205,000), and 2017 PPC champion Elior Sion (1,202,500) are chasing their second WSOP bracelet, while Chance Kornuth (2,605,000) is seeking his fourth. Sean Winter (3,945,000) and the always-entertaining Ren Lin (1,500,000) are also still in the mix.

Day 2 began shortly before 1 p.m. with 58 returning players joined by 20 new arrivals to create a total field of 207 entries. They were playing for a piece of the $4,864,500 prize pool, which would go to the top 32 finishers.

Phil Hellmuth, Shaun Deeb, Jason Koon, and Dan Smith fell short of the money, while Justin Saliba was the unfortunate bubble boy after being whittled down to less than a big blind.

Once the bubble burst, Ben Lamb (30th), Justin Bonomo (29th), and the last two Main Event champions, Koray Aldemir (26th) and Espen Jorstad (25th), all made their way to the payout desk. They were joined by Ethan “Rampage” Yau (23rd) and Daniel Negreanu, who was knocked out in 22nd place by the pocket queens of Weissman.

The remaining nine players are already guaranteed $104,733, but all eyes will be on the $1,215,864 top prize when play resumes. The final table will be streamed by PokerGO beginning at 4 p.m.

Stay tuned to PokerNews for all the updates from the 6-Max High Roller until a new WSOP champion is crowned tomorrow.

Moore Spikes the River to Survive

Level 18 : Blinds 40,000/80,000, 80,000 ante
Chris Moore
Chris Moore

Chris Moore moved all in for around 1,200,000 and Axel Hallay called in the big blind.

Chris Moore: A9
Axel Hallay: A10

The J64 flop gave Hallay a flush draw and left Moore drawing to just two nines in the deck to stay alive. He didn't get any miracles on the K turn as he was already standing up from his seat preparing to exit, but the river brought the 9 and he made a pair to double up.

Andrew Lichtenberger raised to 670,000 from under the gun, leaving himself just one chip behind, and Joey Weissman called on the button.

The two players checked to the turn on a board of 5A2Q, when Weissman put Lichtenberger all in and Lichtenberger tossed in his last chip.

"I have outs," Lichtenberger said, showing 33. Weissman had QQ for a set as the river came the 6 to send Lichtenberger to the rail.

Bin Weng didn't have enough to pay a big blind after losing the big pot to Axel Hallay and was all in against Hallay and Joey Weissman in the blinds.

Hallay bet 60,000 on the 8J4 flop and Weissman called. The turn came the A and Weissman now led out for 65,000.

Hallay called, then called another 350,000 bet on the 5 river. Weissman turned over A5 for two pair, Hallay had J2, while Weng showed 87 before heading for the exit.

Hallay Decimates Weng in Biggest Pot of the Tournament

Level 17 : Blinds 30,000/60,000, 60,000 ante
Axel Hallay
Axel Hallay

Joey Weissman opened for 125,000 from under the gun and Axel Hallay called next to act before Bin Weng reraised to 510,000 in the small blind. Weissman got out of the way, but Hallay stuck around with a call.

The flop came 584 and Weng checked over to Hallay, who bet 375,000. Weng put in a check-raise to 900,000 and Hallay called to the A turn.

Weng now led out for 500,000 and Hallay again called. The river was the K and Weng bet another 800,000, leaving himself just 30,000 behind.

Hallay snap-called and tabled AA. "You got it," Weng said as he mucked.

"Saved you some chips," Hallay responded as he eclipsed 10,000,000.

Lin Dodges the "Gaga" to Double

Level 16 : Blinds 25,000/50,000, 50,000 ante
Ren Lin
Ren Lin

Action folded to Ren Lin in the small blind and he shoved all in for 845,000. Alexandre Vuilleumier in the big blind asked for a count before he called.

Ren Lin: A8
Alexandre Vuilleumier: KQ

"Gaga is off today," Lin said, hoping to avoid a queen that would help Vuilleumier.

"Don't disrespect the Gaga," tablemate Sean Winter added.

"Yes, but an ace come also," Lin replied, and sure enough the A74 flop gave him top pair. Vuilleumier was already drawing dead after the 3 turn, while the 9 on the river was a mere formality.

"Touchdown, baby," Lin yelled as he secured a double up.

"First time I've ever seen you all in where three queens didn't come," Winter said following the hand.

Sam Soverel

Heads-up on a board of 86AJ, Keith Lehr bet enough to put Sam Soverel all in, and Soverel committed his last 300,000.

Soverel had A4 but was dominated by the A9 of Lehr as the players began playfully exchanging cards. The river came the 7 and Soverel was eliminated.

The remaining 12 players are now drawing for seats at the final two tables.

Shortly after taking a big portion of his stack, Chance Kornuth put the final dagger in Sam Lasowitz.

According to Kornuth, Laskowitz was all in for 300,000 on a flop of Qx8x5x with 96 and Kornuth had KQ for top pair. Laskowitz couldn't find any help on the turn and river and hit the rail in 16th place.

"How many players who knock out," tablemate Bin Weng asked as Kornuth stacked up more than 5,000,000.

Daniel Negreanu: A10

"I'm running good at all ins, so maybe I'll hit an ace," Negreanu said as the flop came J98.

Two World Champs Down

Level 13 : Blinds 10,000/25,000, 25,000 ante
Espen Jorstad
Espen Jorstad

Espen Jorstad was all in for around 450,000 and up against Bill Klein.

Espen Jorstad: AQ
Bill Klein: JJ

Jorstad was racing for his tournament life and took the lead on the Q74 flop, hitting top pair. The J turn, though, was a disaster as Klein made a set. The river came the 2 and the reigning Main Event champion tapped the felt and wished his former tablemates luck before heading for the payout desk.

"I was just about to say Bill Klein does so well in all ins. Then you won one," Daniel Negreanu told Klein after the hand.

Koray Aldemir, Jorstad's predecessor as world champion, was also eliminated at the same time on another table.
