The Two Failed Bluffs in One Week that Cost Doug Polk $700k

Level 6
Doug Polk
Doug Polk

Chris Moneymaker had the Bluff of the Century in 2003. This past week, Doug Polk had perhaps the Failed Bluff of the Century.

On Sunday, heads-up for a bracelet, Polk bluffed off a significant portion of his stack at the 2023 World Series of Poker (WSOP) less than one week after his infamous bluff attempt that didn't get through on Hustler Casino Live's $1 million game.

In both instances, the Upswing Poker founder had a busted draw and attempted to use aggression to coerce his opponents into folding somewhat marginal holdings in massive pots. Both times, however, his efforts were unsuccessful and quite costly.

Guagenti Wins Threeway Pot

Level 5

Picking up the action partway through the hand, Nick Guagenti on the button was involved in a pot with Chino Rheem under the gun and David "ODB" Baker in the cutoff that had been cap bet prior to the first draw.

Both Rheem and Baker took one card on the first draw while Guagenti stood pat. Action then checked to Guagenti who bet and received two calls.

As on the previous draw, Rheem and Baker asked for one card and Guagenti decided to keep his hand as it was. Action checked to Guagenti and he bet only to see Rheem respond by raising. Baker then re-raised but the button clicking did not end there as Guagenti came back over the top. Rheem did not seem altogether thrilled with the situation, though both he and Baker did make the call.

Rheem and Baker each took one last card on the final draw. Guagenti, meanwhile, stood pat. After Rheem checked, Baker tossed out a bet and was snapped off by Guagenti who, after Rheem got out of the way, showed down 7432 for a winner.

Friedman In the Mix

Level 5

Three time $10,000 Dealer's Choice champion Adam Friedman has hopped into the tournament. Friedman opened in the cutoff and was called by the big blind.

The first draw saw the big blind take one to Friedman's two before both players checked.

On the second draw the same drawing pattern took place but this time the big blind led into Friedman who, after some thought, released his holding.

Seiver Pats Down

Level 4

Action folded around to the small blind who limp-called a raise from Scott Seiver in the big blind.

On the first draw, the small blind took one while Seiver stood pat. The small blind then checked to Seiver, who bet and was called.

The second draw saw the small blind take one once again and Seiver stand pat. As on the previous draw, the small blind check-called a bet from Seiver.

The small blind drew one on the last draw and, unsurprisingly, Seiver stood pat before betting after his opponent checked. Appearing to know he was beat, the small blind nevertheless called the bet but tossed his hand away after Seiver revealed he held K1092.

Bell Takes From Bracelet Winner

Level 4
Joseph Altomonte
Joseph Altomonte

Last night's $600 PLO Deepstack winner, Joseph Altomonte, has wasted no time getting his grind back on.

Altomonte raised from under the gun and got four callers. He stood pat, bet 400 but couldn't persuade anyone to fold. He patted again and bet 800.

The button called and David Bell in the small blind, raised. Altomonte raised again, and Bell capped the betting at 4000.

All three players patted. Bell bet again, and when both opponents called, tabled 632A and took down the pot.

Baker Takes From Rheem

Level 4
David ODB Baker
David ODB Baker

A player in the cutoff opened and was called by Chino Rheem on the button as well as David "ODB" Baker in the big blind.

Baker and the cutoff took one card on the first draw while Rheem opted for two. Action then checked to Rheem, who bet and received two calls.

All three players drew one on the second draw before Baker took over the betting lead. The cutoff folded but Rheem made the call.

Both Baker and Rheem stood pat after which Baker bet again. Rheem called but mucked after Baker announced "seven perfect", tabling 732A.
