Twenty years after his defining victory in the 2003 World Series of Poker (WSOP) Main Event that ignited the Poker Boom, Chris Moneymaker came to Las Vegas looking to further his already cemented status as one of the most important figures in poker history.
Only 27 years old at the time, Moneymaker spun a $40 satellite victory into $2.5 million in perhaps the most memorable and consequential WSOP victory of all time. Now a household name in poker, Moneymaker has now put up a $50,000 buy-in — the biggest of his two-decade poker career — to play the prestigious WSOP Poker Players Championship for the first time at the 2023 WSOP.
PokerNews spoke with Moneymaker during Day 1 on June 18 as he battled against the likes of Daniel Negreanu, Josh Arieh and two-time defending champion Dan "Jungleman" Cates, all of whom were seated at the 2003 Main Event champion's table.
Gershon Distenfeld: XxXx/5♦10♦4♠6♣
Yueqi Zhu: XxXx/K♠2♠3♥J♥ - folded on sixth street
Yueqi Zhu completed and Gershon Distenfeld called.
Distenfeld called bets from Zhu on fourth and fifth street, but then raised a bet from Zhu on sixth. Zhu thought for a while before deciding to let his hand go.
Distenfeld, a poker philanthropist, is up to 190,000 in the early part of Day 2 and will be looking to make a run at his second WSOP bracelet.
Jon Turner: XxXx/5x6x10x9♦/Xx
Brandon Berkenfeld: Jx7x5x/2x6xQx3x
Jon Turner was heads-up against Brandon Berkenfeld on fourth street. Berkenfeld called bets from Turner on fourth and fifth and then both players checked down on sixth and seventh.
Berkenfeld announced, "Seventy-six," as he turned over Jx7x5x and Turner mucked — conceding the pot to Berkenfeld.
Action was picked up in a three-way pot with Steven Abitbol in middle position, Michael Filipiak in the hijack, and David Funkhouser in the cutoff all having put in four bets on a 5♣7♠2♥ flop.
The turn came 7♥. Abitbol bet and the other two players called. The 8♣ river followed the same pattern.
Filipiak turned over A♥10♠3♠2♦ for the nut low, although he shared the same low with Funkhouser's A♦A♣Q♦3♣; they each got a quarter of the pot.
Abitbol turned over A♠Q♥6♣4♥ for the eight-high straight, awarding him the high half of the pot.
