Kiriopoulos Leads 21 Players into Final Day of Event #16: $1,500 No-Limit Hold'em 6-Handed

Level 20 : 5,000/10,000, 1,000 ante
Demosthenes Kiriopoulos

Canadian player Demosthenes Kiriopoulos takes the lead into the final day of Event #16: $1,500 No-Limit Hold'em 6-Handed with only 21 players left in contention for the $393,273 first prize and the prestigious WSOP bracelet. Kiriopoulos dominated Day 2, eventually bagging a giant stack of 1,450,000. He will have more than 120 big blinds when play resumes.

One of Kiriopoulos's numerous victims was six-time WSOP bracelet winner Layne Flack who was knocked out by "D. K." in the second-last hand of the day, leaving the tournament in 23rd place.

Anthony Marquez climbed up into second place after winning a huge pot with quads on the last hand of the day. He is just shy of one million in chips, with 998,000 in his bag. Shivan Abdine (970,000) rounds out the top three.

There were 263 players coming back for Day 2 of the $1,500 6-Handed tournament, all guaranteed a min-cash as they survived the bubble in the 1,748-entry field. Today's first two levels brought a ton of eliminations as the room was full of short stacks who were trying to spin their way back up to contention.

Matt Berkey, Justin Bonomo and Aditya Agarwal were all looming around the pole position at the early stages of the day. Agarwal went from the top all the way to zero within an hour and Bonomo's run was halted in 41st place.

Berkey's stack was diminished when his top pair couldn't hold when he was all in on the turn against James Mackey's huge draw. But Berkey healed his wounds and rebuilt his stack. He'll be back for the final day with 796,000, good for fifth place on the leaderboard.

Those who were eliminated during Day 2 included former WSOP Main Event finalists Jeremy Ausmus (37th for $8,187), Dan Sindelar (40th for $8,187), Sylvain Loosli (47th for $6,750), Bruno Politano (53rd for $5,648) and JC Tran (96th for $3,222).

Day 2 came to a close midway through Level 21 (6,000/12,000, ante 2,000) and play will resume Saturday at 12 p.m. in the Brasilia Room. The PokerNews team will be present to monitor all the action all the way through to the final hand. Tune in for the live coverage to see the new champion arise.

Kiriopoulos Hits Jackpot; Eliminates Joseph

Level 20 : 5,000/10,000, 1,000 ante
Demo Kiriopoulos
Demo Kiriopoulos

Jeremy Joseph min-raised and the price for 20,000 seemed reasonable for Ilkin Amirov, Daniel Weinman and Demosthenes Kiriopoulos, who all made up for a four-way pot.

The flop fell {10-Hearts}{8-Diamonds}{6-Clubs} and action checked to the original raiser. Joseph pushed all in, causing a fold from Amirov and a request for a count from Weinman. It was 199,000, which was too much for Weinman.

But when Weinman released his cards, Kiriopoulos instantly threw in one chip, signalling a call. Kiriopoulos turned over {9-Diamonds}{7-Hearts} for a flopped nuts. Joseph was drawing very thin with just {K-Clubs}{10-Clubs}.

Joseph's chances increased when the {8-Clubs} hit the turn, which was one of the best possible cards to keep his hopes alive. He could still dream about a runner-runner boat or flush, but the {6-Spades} disappointed him.

Kiriopoulos added another victim to his list and regained the chip lead, surpassing James Mackey in the leader board.

New Leader; Mackey gets the Best of Berkey, Again

Level 19 : 4,000/8,000, 1,000 ante
James Mackey (From an earlier event)
James Mackey (From an earlier event)

We heard the "All-in. Call," from across the room and arrived to see a monster pot brewing between Matt Berkey and James Mackey. The two had tangled previously this evening with Mackey stinging Berkey for a double up.

This time, the board read {8-Clubs}{j-Diamonds}{2-Clubs}{4-Hearts} with Berkey holding {q-}{j-} and Mackey having {9-Clubs}{10-Clubs}. Berkey had Mackey covered, and was forced to pay Mackey's 372,000 stack when the river came a {q-Hearts}, giving Mackey a straight and the chip lead.

Joseph Takes Politano Out, Amirov Profits

Level 16 : 2,000/4,000, 500 ante
Jeremy Joseph
Jeremy Joseph

When we got to the table we saw Bruno Politano packing his stuff and walking to the payout desk. We also saw that Jeremy Joseph was moving all of Politano's former chips to his own stack. We asked him what happened.

"All-in pre-flop, Aces vs Kings" Joseph said.

The last hand before the break Joseph was sitting in the small blind and Ilkin Amirov in mid-position. Amirov raised to 9,000, Joseph called.

The flop brought the {2-Clubs}{J-Hearts}{2-Hearts}. Joseph checked, Amirov opened to 11,000. Joseph raised to 30,000 and Amirov called.

On the turn the {A-Diamonds} came on which both players checked.

The {6-Clubs} on the river completed the board, Joseph bet 50,000 and Amirov snap-called. Joseph showed the {A-Spades}{6-Hearts} for two pair but Amirov showed the {Q-Clubs}{2-Spades} for trips.

Politano Knocks Nguyen Out

Level 16 : 2,000/4,000, 500 ante
Bruno Politano
Bruno Politano

When we got to the table, we could see that three players were involved in the hand and the {J-Clubs}{4-Hearts}{J-Hearts} was flop being dealt.

Kristijonas Andrulis in the small blind bet 5,000. Bruno Politano in the big blind called, and Men Nugyen on the button raised to 13,000. Andrulis folded and Politano called.

The turn was the {2-Hearts} and Politano checked to see Nguyen going all in.

"How many chips have you got in a stack?" Politano asked Nguyen.

Nguyen refused to count, the rest of the table tried to guess but, in the end, Politano asked for the floor to come. The dealer explained the situation to the floor. The floor eventually took one of the stacks and counted them.

"Twenty-four in a stack," he said. Andrulis asked the floor what the rule was exactly as he thought that it was a rule to have 20 chips in a stack. The floor confirmed that stacks don't need to be in stacks of 20 but do need to be easily identifiable.

In the end, Politano called. Nguyen showed the {K-Hearts}{10-Hearts} for a flush but Politano had the {J-Diamonds}{2-Diamonds} for a full house.

The {6-Clubs} on the river didn't make any difference as Nguyen was drawing dead anyways.

Kiriopoulos Takes Lead after Getting Paid Off with a Set

Level 16 : 2,000/4,000, 500 ante
Demo Kiriopoulos
Demo Kiriopoulos

A giant pot between Demosthenes Kiriopoulos and Robert Hankins determined who would be pacing the remaining field.

With the board reading {5-Diamonds}{J-Clubs}{7-Hearts}{A-Clubs}, Kiriopoulos bet what looked to be 42,000 in position and Hankins called.

The river was the {2-Hearts} and Hankins checked to Kiriopoulos again. Kiripoulos, who will add only his second WSOP cash after collecting his prize from this tournament, put in one of the biggest river bets the tournament has seen so far. He made it 130,000 and while it was a huge sum, Hankins wasted no time calling. Hankins was shown {7-Spades}{7-Diamonds} for a flopped set, and he couldn't beat that.

The question was answered, Kiriopoulos now covers anyone in the tournament with nearly 700,000 lying at his seat.

Haag Plays Half-A-Milly

Level 16 : 2,000/4,000, 500 ante
Michael Haag
Michael Haag

John Richards was in the hijack and he placed in a good old triple raise, making it 12,000 to go. Michael Haag flatted from the big blind and the hand progressed to the {10-Diamonds}{8-Diamonds}{10-Clubs} flop.

Haag let his opponent continue for 15,000 and then check-raised to 32,000. Richards matched the price.

The {2-Diamonds} landed on the turn and Haag fired another 38,000. Richards called again.

Another diamond arrived on the river as the {J-Diamonds} completed the board. Both players tapped and Haag announced a jack. He turned over {J-Clubs}{9-Spades} and that was enough to scoop a large pot to vault up to 530,000.

Average Stack? Make It Double at Bonomo's Table

Level 14 : 1,200/2,400, 400 ante
Mike Holm
Mike Holm

The tournament clock shows about 137,000 as the current average stack with 96 players left. That information is quite irrelevant at Justin Bonomo's table, where the average stack means nothing. There are five players with nearly 1.4 million in chips between them.

The only player below the actual average was Chicago's Mike Holm but that's not true anymore. Holm opened for 5,500 and Justin Bonomo woke up with a three-bet to 20,000. Holm immediately said the two magic words "all in" and Bonomo had no reason to delay his call, holding {A-Clubs}{A-Diamonds}.

Holm had {J-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds} and needed a tremendous help from the dealer. The flop {4-Hearts}{9-Clubs}{K-Diamonds} was a solid teaser as Holm was now drawing his gut-shot to a straight.

The turn was made things even more interesting as the {J-Spades} hit the felt. Any ten, jack or queen would cause a change in the events as it would make Holm's double up instead of Bonomo claiming another notch on his gun-stock.

And indeed, the {Q-Hearts} landed on the river to save Holm's tournament life. He doubled for 90,700 and praised the dealer: "Excellent dealing," he said before adding: "Stupid. It's stupid. I'm supposed to be the tight old guy."

Bonomo took the bad beat very professionally, with a smile and the classic phrase "nice hand".

Now there is no one on that table who would be worried about that number revealing average chip count.

Kempe Can't Fold; Sends His Chips to Politano

Level 14 : 1,200/2,400, 400 ante
Bruno Politano
Bruno Politano

With about 70,000 chips already in the pot, Rainer Kempe (button) clashed with Bruno Politano (small blind) on the turn reading {2-Clubs}{4-Spades}{Q-Spades}{10-Spades}.

Politano checked to Kempe, who fired 19,000. Politano went into about two-minute deep thought. In the meantime, he took a sip from his drink. Then he said he was all in.

Kempe had only about 40,000 left behind. He looked at his remaining chips, shook his head and moved them towards the middle, saying "I can't fold" with a disappointing tone in his voice.

Kempe sensed bad news and he was right as he saw a devastating {A-Spades}{9-Spades} in the showdown to leave his {A-Diamonds}{Q-Diamonds} drawing dead. The river {2-Diamonds} was only a formality as Kempe was already on his way. The Brazilian November Niner slowly stacked up a new ton of chips from the huge pot. When Politano finished, it became clear he just broke the 300,000 chip-mark.

Bonomo Keeps Bossing

Level 14 : 1,200/2,400, 400 ante
Justin Bonomo
Justin Bonomo

Aditya Agarwal is the new sheriff in town. He has two full piles of 5,000-chips in front of him, in addition to loads of chips of other denominations. In all, he's grinding 350,000.

But there are other sharks hungry for the chip lead. Those feature Justin Bonomo, who keeps it rolling, too.

Bonomo's table is very entertaining. He's sitting left to Shivanraif Abdine who's also handling a big stack, and so is Sylvain Loosli who shares the flops with Bonomo and Abdine.

It didn't take long to wait and see interesting battles. The atmosphere got tense when Abdine opened to 5,200 from the cutoff and Bonomo three-bet him to 16,500 in position.

Abdine called and the pot remained of the same size through the board {2-Diamonds}{8-Hearts}{9-Hearts}{3-Clubs}{Q-Spades}, with just one exception. Bonomo didn't check back the river, ending the peace with a 39,000 bet. Abdine folded.

The following hand saw Bonomo open to 5,500 from the cutoff and Michael Sanders moved all in for his remaining 23,800. Bonomo asked for a count and called when the price was confirmed.

Sanders was ahead with {A-Hearts}{5-Clubs} against {J-Diamonds}{10-Hearts}. He came close to doubling, but eventually couldn't avoid a lethal {J-Hearts} on the river.
