Day 2 of Event #16: $1,500 No-Limit Hold'em 6-Handed Ready to Whittle Down

Dustin Bush
Dustin Bush

Welcome to Day 2 of Event #16: $1,500 No-Limit Hold'em 6-Handed at the 2017 World Series of Poker. Just 263 out of 1,748 players who started yesterday will return to play 10-and-a-half 60-minute levels today. Everyone is guaranteed a minimum of $2,247, but they will all be trying their best for that WSOP gold bracelet and $393,273 prize for first.

The chip leader is Dustin Bush with 182,800 chips, aiming to win his first-ever bracelet. Trailing behind him in the chip counts are Sebastian Winkelmann (177,300), Matt Berkey (166,500), Danny Noam (155,400), Aditya Agarwal (140,000), Matthew Zarcadoolas (138,300), David Levy (136,400) and Mike Holm (136,000).

There are still lots of other notable names to pay attention to like Benjamin Zamani, Paul Volpe, Maurice Hawkins, Justin Bonomo, Shannon Shorr and many, many more. Another name we feel like we should mention is Jared Jacobmeyer, who managed to fold himself into the money with only 200 chips left. He remains short, though, and will have to work hard to fight his way to the top.

Day 2 will kick off at 12 noon on Friday inside the Miranda room, and bust outs might go quickly in the beginning. So keep following the live updates right here on PokerNews to find out who will make it to Day 3 and take that bracelet home.

Bonomo Bolts Into the Chip Lead

Level 11 : 600/1,200, 200 ante
Justin Bonomo
Justin Bonomo

We picked up the action on the turn of a 40,000-chip pot and a board reading {2-Clubs}{a-Diamonds}{5-Clubs}{j-Hearts}. Justin Bonomo was facing a bet of 18,300 and made the call.

The river was the {q-Hearts} and Bonomo's opponent checked. Bonomo thought for just a moment before announcing he was all in. This put Bonomo's opponent deep into the tank.

About five minutes went by without Bonomo flinching in the slightest. His opponent squirmed and agonized over the decision before eventually making the call.

Bonomo tabled {a-Hearts}{j-Clubs} for two pair and his opponent mucked {a-Clubs}{k-Clubs}, having made a pair of aces but bricking out on a nut-flush draw.

With the pot, Bonomo appears to be the new tournament chip leader.

Shorr Makes the River Call; Busts to Fast

Level 12 : 800/1,600, 200 ante
Dietrich Fast (as seen in a previous event)
Dietrich Fast (as seen in a previous event)

On the turn reading {4-Hearts}{K-Spades}{6-Clubs}{A-Hearts}, Dietrich Fast called Shannon Shorr's bet of 10,200.

The two famous players saw the {7-Diamonds} land on the river and Shorr slowed down with a check. Fast didn't act immediately but eventually declared all in for just over 30,000 effectively.

Shorr needed about two minutes to make his decision and then threw some of his chips forward, making the call. Fast showed {6-Hearts}{6-Diamonds} for a flopped set and Shorr wanted to muck his hand, conceding. As it was an all-in situation, the dealer turned Shorr's hand over and everyone at the table saw that he called with {A-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds}.

Fast is now closing on 100 big blinds.

Volpe's Aces Suffer a Huge Bad Beat

Level 12 : 800/1,600, 200 ante
Paul Volpe
Paul Volpe

There was 9,200 in front of Paul Volpe, who was sitting in the small blind. His neighbor, Perati Muhamet, had even larger chunk lying a few inches closer to the middle. Muhamet's four-bet from the button was worth 18,200 and Volpe matched that price with a call.

They went to the {6-Clubs}{9-Spades}{9-Clubs} flop where Muhamet continued with a small bet worth 8,600. Volpe asked how much was it and then check-called.

The turn was the {10-Diamonds} and Volpe checked yet again. Muhamet moved all in for 27,800 and Volpe snap-called, showing {A-Diamonds}{A-Clubs}. Muhamet held {Q-Spades}{J-Diamonds}, the ten on the turn having brought him an up-and-down straight draw.

Muhamet got there on the {K-Spades} river, and Volpe's stack suffered a huge blow while Muhamet elevated over 100,000.

Loosli Knocks Lau Out

Level 13 : 1,000/2,000, 300 ante
Sylvain Loosli
Sylvain Loosli

We arrived at the table to see {8-Clubs}{5-Diamonds}{Q-Spades}{2-Spades} on the board already.

Sylvain Loosli, on the big blind, bet 22,500 and was called by Ka Kwan Lau sitting on the under the gun position.

The river was the {8-Spades}, Loosli proceeded with going all in and had Lau covered. Lau took his time and, in the end, made the call. Loosli showed the {5-Clubs}{5-Spades} for a full house and Lau threw his cards into the muck and grabbed his stuff.

Soik Doubles Through Berkey Again

Level 13 : 1,000/2,000, 300 ante
Matt Berkey
Matt Berkey

Looking at Matt Berkey's stack, it's fair to say that there haven't been many players who would successfully tangle with the American high roller in the Event #16: $1,500 No-Limit Hold'em 6-Handed.

But Mark Soik might be one of the few who have the vibes to avoid Berkey's domination. Soik doubled through Berkey earlier in this level, hitting a straight with king-queen against Berkey's ace-nine.

That victory clearly wasn't enough for Soik, who doubled through Berkey once again just a few moments ago. Soik had a worse starting hand again, and it was a bigger problem this time as he was in only about a 20-percent shape to scoop the pot.

Sporting the Green Bay Packers jacket, Soik was all in with {6-Hearts}{6-Spades} for 26,300, trailing to Berkey's {J-Hearts}{J-Spades}. The flop {K-Hearts}{7-Hearts}{3-Spades} kept Berkey in lead but Soik hit his bingo on the {6-Clubs} turn. The {5-Hearts} on the river sealed the deal for Soik.

He apologized for cracking Berkey, but he took the bad beat very well. It was only a minor sting as Berkey is still crushing with close to 300,000 in chips.

Bonomo Keeps Bossing

Level 14 : 1,200/2,400, 400 ante
Justin Bonomo
Justin Bonomo

Aditya Agarwal is the new sheriff in town. He has two full piles of 5,000-chips in front of him, in addition to loads of chips of other denominations. In all, he's grinding 350,000.

But there are other sharks hungry for the chip lead. Those feature Justin Bonomo, who keeps it rolling, too.

Bonomo's table is very entertaining. He's sitting left to Shivanraif Abdine who's also handling a big stack, and so is Sylvain Loosli who shares the flops with Bonomo and Abdine.

It didn't take long to wait and see interesting battles. The atmosphere got tense when Abdine opened to 5,200 from the cutoff and Bonomo three-bet him to 16,500 in position.

Abdine called and the pot remained of the same size through the board {2-Diamonds}{8-Hearts}{9-Hearts}{3-Clubs}{Q-Spades}, with just one exception. Bonomo didn't check back the river, ending the peace with a 39,000 bet. Abdine folded.

The following hand saw Bonomo open to 5,500 from the cutoff and Michael Sanders moved all in for his remaining 23,800. Bonomo asked for a count and called when the price was confirmed.

Sanders was ahead with {A-Hearts}{5-Clubs} against {J-Diamonds}{10-Hearts}. He came close to doubling, but eventually couldn't avoid a lethal {J-Hearts} on the river.

Kempe Can't Fold; Sends His Chips to Politano

Level 14 : 1,200/2,400, 400 ante
Bruno Politano
Bruno Politano

With about 70,000 chips already in the pot, Rainer Kempe (button) clashed with Bruno Politano (small blind) on the turn reading {2-Clubs}{4-Spades}{Q-Spades}{10-Spades}.

Politano checked to Kempe, who fired 19,000. Politano went into about two-minute deep thought. In the meantime, he took a sip from his drink. Then he said he was all in.

Kempe had only about 40,000 left behind. He looked at his remaining chips, shook his head and moved them towards the middle, saying "I can't fold" with a disappointing tone in his voice.

Kempe sensed bad news and he was right as he saw a devastating {A-Spades}{9-Spades} in the showdown to leave his {A-Diamonds}{Q-Diamonds} drawing dead. The river {2-Diamonds} was only a formality as Kempe was already on his way. The Brazilian November Niner slowly stacked up a new ton of chips from the huge pot. When Politano finished, it became clear he just broke the 300,000 chip-mark.

Average Stack? Make It Double at Bonomo's Table

Level 14 : 1,200/2,400, 400 ante
Mike Holm
Mike Holm

The tournament clock shows about 137,000 as the current average stack with 96 players left. That information is quite irrelevant at Justin Bonomo's table, where the average stack means nothing. There are five players with nearly 1.4 million in chips between them.

The only player below the actual average was Chicago's Mike Holm but that's not true anymore. Holm opened for 5,500 and Justin Bonomo woke up with a three-bet to 20,000. Holm immediately said the two magic words "all in" and Bonomo had no reason to delay his call, holding {A-Clubs}{A-Diamonds}.

Holm had {J-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds} and needed a tremendous help from the dealer. The flop {4-Hearts}{9-Clubs}{K-Diamonds} was a solid teaser as Holm was now drawing his gut-shot to a straight.

The turn was made things even more interesting as the {J-Spades} hit the felt. Any ten, jack or queen would cause a change in the events as it would make Holm's double up instead of Bonomo claiming another notch on his gun-stock.

And indeed, the {Q-Hearts} landed on the river to save Holm's tournament life. He doubled for 90,700 and praised the dealer: "Excellent dealing," he said before adding: "Stupid. It's stupid. I'm supposed to be the tight old guy."

Bonomo took the bad beat very professionally, with a smile and the classic phrase "nice hand".

Now there is no one on that table who would be worried about that number revealing average chip count.

Haag Plays Half-A-Milly

Level 16 : 2,000/4,000, 500 ante
Michael Haag
Michael Haag

John Richards was in the hijack and he placed in a good old triple raise, making it 12,000 to go. Michael Haag flatted from the big blind and the hand progressed to the {10-Diamonds}{8-Diamonds}{10-Clubs} flop.

Haag let his opponent continue for 15,000 and then check-raised to 32,000. Richards matched the price.

The {2-Diamonds} landed on the turn and Haag fired another 38,000. Richards called again.

Another diamond arrived on the river as the {J-Diamonds} completed the board. Both players tapped and Haag announced a jack. He turned over {J-Clubs}{9-Spades} and that was enough to scoop a large pot to vault up to 530,000.
