Defending Champ MacPhee, Two-Time Bracelet Winner Bicknell Among 46 Left

Level 18 : 5,000/10,000, 1,000 ante
Kevin MacPhee
Kevin MacPhee

Day 3 of World Series of Poker Europe Main Event began with 135 players, and by the time play wrapped up after almost exactly 12 hours, the field had been reduced to 46, all of whom are in the money.

Plenty of notables are among those remaining. Start with Kevin MacPhee, the American pro who conquered WSOPE the last time it ran, winning in 2015 in a field of 313 runners in Berlin for €883,000. MacPhee did not come into the day with a ton of chips but built up during the middle stages and wound up with 653,000.

One key pot he won saw him flip for about 300,000 at 5,000/10,000/1,000 with fellow pro Anatoly Filatov. MacPhee held jacks and managed to hold and win unimproved against ace-queen suited. Had MacPhee lost that one, he would have been under 20 big blinds.

Another player who made it through: two-time gold bracelet winner Kristen Bicknell. She took down the Ladies Championship in 2013 for $173,922 and then the $1,500 Bounty in 2016 for $290,768. Bicknell busted a number of the more accomplished players in the field, including bracelet winners Asi Moshe and Dominik Nitsche, the latter of whom took down the €111,111 High Roller for One Drop just days ago.

Despite those windfalls, Bicknell found herself all in and at risk in a five-bet all in pot against Andrei Boghean. Luckily for the Canadian, she had a big edge with kings against jacks and faded any further fishhooks appearing on the board to double to 1.1 million before bagging 1,085,000.

Everyone's looking up in the counts at relatively unknown Robert Bickley, though. The British player bagged 1,431,000 to lead the way heading into Day 4. He busted Philipp Gruissem in the last hand of the night when Gruissem got it in with king-ten of clubs and couldn't overcome ace-king.

He's followed by top pros Jack Salter (1,396,000) and Rainer Kempe (1,254,000), both of whom have experience against the toughest competition that populate $100K buy-ins and other high rollers. They'll surely be considered by most observers to be among the favorites at this point.

The money bubble burst a little over halfway through the day, with the top 80 places paid. Spanish reg Javier Zarco busted in unlucky 81st place when he couldn't improve with three outs when he was all in for 11 big blinds.

Some of those who walked away from their final hand to the payout desk included Stefan Schillhabel, Dominik Panka, Julian Stuer, Pierre Neuville, Alexander Lakhov and 888poker Ambassador Vivian Saliba.

Action resumes once again at noon local time on Wednesday, with blinds and antes at 6,000/12,000/2,000 and everyone in the money for at least €20,175. Come back to PokerNews to see who collects that amount and who can best position himself or herself for €1,115,207 on Day 4.

Phillipp Gruissem
Phillipp Gruissem

Philipp Gruissem opened to 23,000 from middle position and Robert Bickley reraised to 63,000. Gruissem four-bet shoved his remaining 256,000 and Bickley snap called.

Bickley had {a-Clubs}{k-Clubs} against the {k-Diamonds}{10-Clubs} of Gruissem. The board ran out {a-Diamonds}{6-Clubs}{2-Hearts}{a-Spades}{5-Diamonds} and Gruissem was eliminated. Bickley will end the day as the chip leader.

Talbot Eliminates One; Still Not Happy

Level 18 : 5,000/10,000, 1,000 ante
Parker Talbot
Parker Talbot

Oleh Haisiuk had shoved from mid-position and so did Parker Talbot from the cutoff who had him covered. Action folded to Mathijs Jonkers in the big blind who folded but showed his neighbor, Stoyan Obreshkov, the cards before folding.

Parker Talbot: {K-Clubs}{K-Hearts}
Oleh Haisiuk: {A-Clubs}{10-Spades}

The board ran out {4-Spades}{Q-Clubs}{2-Spades}{Q-Diamonds}{8-Hearts} - no help for Haisiuk and he was eliminated in 50th place.

The dealer pushed the pot to Talbot and as he was stacking up his chips he heard that Jonkers had folded ace-king. Talbot was very unhappy about this fact but Obreshkov seemed very impressed that Jonkers was able to fold that. Talbot was more unhappy about how Jonkers could have folded and how Talbot could have had way more chips. After having told the whole table how unfair it all was, he went up to Niall Farrell to tell him what happened. And told maybe, even more, people around the tournament room.

Kristen Bicknell
Kristen Bicknell

Kristen Bicknell opened for a raise and got three-bet by Andrei Boghean, who put in 71,000 from the cutoff in a hand with a dead button. Bicknell came back with 175,000 and Boghean shoved for 560,000 effective. Bicknell quickly called it off with {k-Spades}{k-Diamonds} and was ahead of Boghean's {j-Diamonds}{j-Spades}. The community came {10-Diamonds}{5-Spades}{6-Clubs}{9-Hearts}{7-Clubs} and Bicknell doubled.

Michal Mrakes
Michal Mrakes

In a hand that occurred on the stream, Michal Mrakes raised to 18,000 in middle position and got a call from small blind Maria Ho and her {7-Clubs}{7-Diamonds}. Mrakes had {a-Diamonds}{4-Clubs} and flopped a wheel as {3-Diamonds}{2-Spades}{5-Hearts} hit. He bet 14,000 and Ho check-called. On the {7-Spades} turn, Ho bet out 36,000. Mrakes made it 108,000 and Ho called. The river was the {8-Spades} and both players checked, with Mrakes taking about a minute before deciding to see a showdown.

Jack Salter
Jack Salter

Ante Varnica bet 38,000 on a {6-Spades}{7-Diamonds}{4-Diamonds} flop and got called by Chi Zhang in the cutoff. Jack Salter woke up with a check-raise to 130,000. Varnica folded but Zhang stuck around. The turn was a {9-Clubs}. Salter moved all in for 540,000, more than the size of the pot. Zhang got the count but ultimately folded.

Javier Zarco Eliminated on the Bubble

WSOPE Main Event Bubble
WSOPE Main Event Bubble

Javier Zarco was all in for 66,000 in the cutoff and received a call from Stephen Ayres, in the small blind.

Zarco: {a-Hearts}{8-Hearts}
Ayres: {a-Diamonds}{q-Spades}

The {a-Spades}{5-Spades}{7-Hearts} flop was not a particularly good one for Zarco although he did pick up some backdoor outs. Those hopes ended when the {q-Clubs} turned, leaving him dead to the {7-Diamonds} river.

Boghean the First to 1,000,000

Level 16 : 3,000/6,000, 1,000 ante
Andrei Boghean
Andrei Boghean

After the hand for hand was announced Andrei Boghean and Marius Gierse took a few more minutes to finish their hand.

The board read {10-Diamonds}{8-Diamonds}{5-Hearts}{4-Diamonds}{6-Clubs} and Boghean led for 212,000 into the pot of 160,000. Gierse went through several chip shuffling motions. He counted out his stack a few times and then called.

Boghean showed {j-Diamonds}{6-Diamonds} for a flush and Gierse mucked. Gierse is now sitting with about 70,000 with two eliminations left until the money.

Roca De Torres Busts Viard and Schemion, Now Over 800,000

Level 15 : 2,500/5,000, 500 ante
Ole Schemion
Ole Schemion

From the feature table live stream.

Marti Roca De Torres just busted Alexandre Viard and Ole Schemion in quick succession and now has almost 900,000.

The first hand he got all in with Viard and both players were holding ace-queen suited.

Viard: {a-Hearts}{q-Hearts}
Roca De Torres: {a-Spades}{q-Spades}

The board gave both players quite a sweat. The flop came {k-Hearts}{10-Spades}{5-Hearts} and the turn was the {k-Spades}, giving both players a flush draw. The river was the {2-Spades} and Roca De Torres made a flush to eliminate Viard.

Then he had {j-Spades}{10-Spades} and raised in the cutoff to 11,500. Ole Schemion defended in the big blind with {6-Hearts}{5-Clubs}.

The flop came {9-Diamonds}{8-Clubs}{7-Hearts}, giving both players a straight. Both players made the nuts, but Roca De Torres had the nuts. Schemion check-raised to 55,000 on the flop. Then the turn was the {4-Spades} and Schemion bet 90,000. Roca De Torres called again.

The river was the {2-Clubs} and Schemion went all in for his remaining 262,000. Roca De Torres snap-called and just like that Schemion was heading to the rail and Roca De Torres stacked nearly 900,000 chips.

Farrell Doubles Through Bujtas in Massive Pot

Level 15 : 2,500/5,000, 500 ante
Niall Farrell
Niall Farrell

Laszlo Bujtas, under the gun, and Niall Farrell, in the cutoff, built a pot of about 170,000 or so preflop. Bujtas bet 48,000 on a {3-Hearts}{k-Diamonds}{4-Hearts} flop and Farrell called. Both checked the {7-Diamonds} and Bujtas checked the {2-Hearts}. Farrell thought about a minute and said he was all in. Bujtas instantly slid in a call but his {k-Clubs}{q-Hearts} was no match for {a-Hearts}{a-Diamonds}. Bujtas sent Farrell 142,500.
