2013 WSOP November Nine: Michiel Brummelhuis
Over the next week, PokerNews will be taking a brief look at each member of the 2013 World Series of Poker November Nine. We’ll be moving around the table in seat order, and since we’ve already introduced you to Sylvain Loosli in Seat 1, we move one spot over to the Netherlands’ Michiel Brummelhuis.
Brummelhuis may not be a household name, but don’t let that fool you as he’s quite the accomplished poker player. The 32-year-old from Amsterdam has been playing poker since 2004 and amassed seven WSOP cashes in that time for $174,170, though he has over $670,000 in career poker earnings. Among his accomplishments are a sixth-place finish in the 2008 WSOP Event #9 $1,500 No-Limit Hold’em Six-Handed for $53,314 and seventh in the 2009 WSOP Event #33 $10,000 World Championship Limit Hold’em for $67,647.
In addition to his live success, Brummelhuis has done quite well online under the name “utreg.” Back in 2011 he won the PokerStars Super Tuesday after topping a 319-player field for $65,235, and before that he won a $1,000 World Championship of Online Poker (WCOOP) event for $144,000.
Needless to say, Brummelhuis, who is guaranteed at least $733,224 like all other November Niners this year, has already surpassed his lifetime earnings in one fell swoop. The Dutchie will start the final table seventh in chips with 11.275 million, and his spot isn’t too bad. Mark Newhouse, who is eighth in chips, is to his immediate left and shouldn’t pose too much of a threat due to his stack size. Likewise, Ryan Riess and Amir Lehavot are the next two players to his left. While they both have big stacks, they played fairly snug headed into the November Nine. If they come in with the same mentality, Brummelhuis should have some opportunities to swipe the blinds and antes.
It’s going to be hard not to cheer for Brummelhuis at the final table. He’s laidback, humble and is expecting his first child, a baby boy, in September. He’s got a likeable personality, is a soon-to-be family man and is also the first-ever Dutch player to make the final table of the WSOP Main Event (the closest any Dutch player has come was in 2004 when Marcel Luske finished 10th). If he manages to win, Brummelhuis will become the fourth-ever bracelet winner from the Netherlands and secure his family’s financial future in the process.
