The last National Heads-Up Poker Championship took place in 2013 and saw Matusow winning $750,000 after defeating 2005 champion Phil Hellmuth. In the latest edition, which was filmed in PokerGO Studio in Las Vegas in July 2025, saw the four-time bracelet winner match-up against high-stakes end boss Stephen Chidwick.
Other notable matchups in the first round include psychologist Maria Konnikova against Survivor legend Boston Rob, former football pro Richard Seymour against Matt Berkey, PokerStars ambassador Jason Koon against Erick "E-Dog" Lindgren, Jesse Lonis against Kristen Foxen, Alan Keating against reigning World Series of Poker (WSOP) Player of the Year Shaun Deeb, and Charlie Hook against Dan "Jungleman" Cates, who more recently took a hook of his own in a Beverly Hills boxing match.
Previous champions of the National Heads-Up Poker Championship include Ted Forrest, Paul Wasicka, Chris Ferguson, Huck Seed and Annie Duke.
The National Heads-Up Poker Championship was previously produced and broadcast by NBC Sports. The new season initially premiered on Peacock in December.
