New Documentary Will Show Why Poker is So Important (and Legal) in Texas
A new poker documentary is on the horizon, but don't expect this one to be deleted from YouTube over an artificial intelligence (AI) scandal.
The Battle for Texas Poker, produced by P+R Creative, focuses on the positive aspects of poker in Texas. A newly released trailer gives a glimpse into what viewers can expect from the upcoming documentary. The timing, albeit unintentional, couldn't have been more perfect for such a documentary given the legal issues going on at The Lodge Card Club.
PokerNews has been informed that although Texas Card House is featured in the multi-episode film, the goal is to showcase Texas poker in general, as opposed to promoting the TCH brand.
Texas poker is booming, but the state continually faces opposition from lawmakers who believe poker is illegal in the state. Despite the fact that gambling is illegal in the Lone Star State and a handful of politicians believe that includes poker, Texas Penal Code 47.04 paves way for legal poker so long as the business doesn't collect rake. Card rooms such as the six TCH locations across the state charge membership and hourly seat fees in place of rake.
But the social club business model has some detractors. The Battle for Texas Poker documentary series should clear up any confusion not only about the legality of poker in the second most populous state in the country, but also how much the game of poker means to Texans.
"In Texas, certain values are woven into the very marrow of our identity. Some run deeper than tradition, or even history itself. I'm talking about god, football, bar-be-que, and of course, poker," the narrator begins the trailer.
The documentary, as the trailer explains, will take viewers on a journey from the early days of poker in Texas, where organized crime and shady underground games were rampant, to the modern era, where law-abiding social clubs have replaced the corruption.
Many high-profile poker players and personalities such as 2004 World Series of Poker (WSOP) Main Event champion Greg Raymer and WSOP reporter Jeff Platt are featured in the film. Production is currently underway, and no YouTube release date has yet been determined, but expect it to come out within the next few months, perhaps during the 2026 WSOP.
