Shiina Okamoto Busts to Quads; Obrestad WSOPE Main Event Fairytale Ends

Both Shiina Okamoto and Annette Obrestad have been eliminated in quick succession from the WSOP Europe Main Event deep on Day 4, with Okamoto involved in a brutal cooler that saw her pocket aces crushed by quads.

The reigning back-to-back WSOP Ladies Championship winner couldn’t find a fold when Vasileios Panagiotidis flopped and turned a monster in quad jacks, while Obrestad's fairytale return to the felt 19 years on from her 2007 WSOPE Main Event success ended as her pocket twos fell short against Sondre Stormyr.

Both players would bank €40,000 for their deep runs, with the GTO Wizard ambassador Okamoto sent to the rail in 37th, while the youngest ever WSOP bracelet winner in Obrestad would come 34th.

Aces being cracked was a recurring theme on Day 4, with 8-time bracelet winner Josh Arieh also falling victim to a cruel river card earlier in the day.

Check out the nightmare spot that saw the Japanese poker star eliminated in insane fashion, and the final hand of Obrestad's extraordinary comeback as captured by PokerNews' Sava Krink and Calum Grant below:

Full House No Good For Okamoto

Shiina Okamoto

The action picked up as Vasileios Panagiotidis opened from early position to 200,000 holding J10, while Okamoto responded with a three-bet to 650,000 after looking down at AA, which Panagiotidis called.

The dealer fanned a 8JJ flop, giving Panagiotidis trips, which led to Okamoto opting to check-call Panagiotidis’ 400,000 bet.

If the flop was a doozy for Panagiotidis, then the turn was a dream, as J was flipped to give the Greek player a monster hand of quads over his opponents' full house. Okamoto led out with a 900,000 bet, only to see Panagiotidis make the call once again.

The 7 river was a brick. Okamoto used a time bank card before firing a huge 2,500,000 bet, Panagiotidis quickly shoved all in, and Okamoto made the call without hesitation.

The cards were tabled and Okamoto saw the bad news: her full house, jacks over aces, were crushed by Panagiotidis' quad jacks, leaving him to scoop the massive pot and ending Okamoto's deep run in 37th.

Obrestad's Fairytale Return Comes to an End

Annette Obrestad

Sondre Stormyr opened to 200,000 from early position and was called by Rokas Asipauskas from the button. Obrestad moved all in for her tournament life with 540,000 behind from the small blind. Stormyr made it 1,200,000, resulting in a fold from Asipauskas, and leading to the 2007 WSOPE Main Event champ and Stormyr tabling their cards heading to the flop.

Obrestad revealed 22 while Stormyr was holding KJ. A fair fight.

However, Obrestad was immediately drawing to two outs, as Stormyr paired up on the J84 flop. The 7 turn left her with one card to come. The river card would not be her saving grace, as the 10 completed the board.

Obrestad, who has made a scintillating return to the felt at this year's WSOPE Main Event, would be sent to the rail in 34th place, unable to regain the title she so famously won 19 years ago.
