Some Counts

Big Field Expected

Level 6 : 200/400, 50 ante

We have just been informed by APPT President and ANZPT Commissioner that there are already 385 total entries confirmed for this event and that he expects the number to head toward 500 early into Day 1b tomorrow.

Another One Down

We just noticed previous ANZPT champion Octavian Voegele making his way out of the tournament area. No luck for him here in Sydney, he will have to be content with his 2011 ANZPT Adelaide victory.

Ding Dong The Jon is Dead

Jonathan Karamalikis had a great start to Day 1a of the ANZPT Sydney Main Event, making his way up the chip leader board very early into the evening. He then lost a massive flip with {j-}{j-} against {a-}{k-} and now it has all come to an end as the last two hands of his night have happened in quick succession.

It all started when we came to Karamalikis' table with a flop showing {j-Hearts}{8-Spades}{a-Clubs}. He was in the hand against David Allan who led out for 1,400. Karamalikis then put in 10,000 - which left him with 250 behind. Allan made the call and then the two players checked it down as the turn fell the {7-Hearts} and the river hit the {q-Spades}.

Allan tabled {j-Spades}{8-Clubs}, while Karamalikis' {q-}{10-} went straight into the muck.

The very next hand and Karamalikis would commit his last 250 in chips. That would come to no avail though, as his {k-Diamonds}{8-Clubs} was no match for the {a-Diamonds}{k-Clubs} of an opponent.

Another Big One

Another big stack has emerged late into Day 1a. This players name is Nabil Edgtton and that may sound familiar to some as he was one half of the champions who won the teams event just a few nights ago here at ANZPT Sydney. A quick spot of research tells us he also won the 6-handed event for around $16,350 at the Star Poker Summer Series in 2011.

Tollgate Leaving

On the way onto the tournament floor we noticed Tom "tollgate" Grigg was on the rail with a beer in hand. He let us know that he got his {a-}{a-} cracked by Peter Aristidou's {10-}{10-} for a 40,000-chip pot.

Media Run Good

"I hadn't played a hand in like four hours and then you come, and boom!" said Octavian Veogele to our PokerNews reporter as this hand played out.

It was pretty simple really, Voegele was down to under 7,000 and got his stack all in preflop holding {a-Clubs}{a-Spades}. It was up against {j-Clubs}{j-Hearts} for Voegele and he would take the double-up as the board ran out {6-Hearts}{5-Diamonds}{2-Hearts}{4-Spades}{5-Hearts}.

Big Chip Stack

We wandered past Tom Grigg's table and noticed a huge chip stack on the left of Grigg. His name is Andrew Li and he will be one to watch this evening.
