Jesse McKenzie Sets Up the ANZPT Perth Chip Lead

Level 6 : 300/600, 75 ante
Jesse McKenzie - Day 1b Chip Leader
Jesse McKenzie - Day 1b Chip Leader

The third stop on Season 5 of the Australia New Zealand Poker Tour continued on Thursday, with Day 1b of the ANZPT Perth Main Event being the last chance for players to secure a Day 2 appearance. By the time it was all over, Jesse McKenzie had bagged up the most chips.

After an evening start on Day 1a, the second of two Day 1 flights was scheduled to begin at 12.30pm local time, but after a few technical difficulties, the start was delayed for half an hour. Eventually the cards were flying as a total of 151 players sat at the tables with the hopes of surviving and thriving.

Combined with the 67 players from Day 1a, and one no show, the total field size for the 2013 ANZPT Perth Main Event came in at 219, with the prize pool coming in at $438,000. Of that amount, $114,000 is reserved for the eventual champion. Check out the prize pool and payout page for a full rundown of the cash situation.

With such a large field on Day 1b, there was no surprise to see dozens of the most well-known players from around the local poker scene. Some of the notable players who tried their hand at becoming the next ANZPT Perth champion, but fell short throughout Day 1b include Ashley Warner, Paul Hockin, Didier Guerin, Anthony Aston and Raj Ramakrishnan.

While the above players may have hit the rail, many managed to survive and thrive. Included in the "thrive" category were the likes of Tam Truong (119,150), Brad Douglas (91,500), Tristan Bain (72,750), Melanie Weisner (69,700) and James Broom (50,350).

One player who did better than all others on Day 1b was Jesse McKenzie. A huge later half of the night saw McKenzie hit two sets to send two players home and see his stack rise to the astronomical height of 162,825 in chips. That amount will see McKenzie Begin Day 2 as the chip leader by a huge margin.

In the end it was 70 players who survived Day 1b and they will join the 38 survivors from Day 1a at the felt on Day 2. Be sure to check back soon for the full end-of-day 1b chip count list, but until then, goodnight from Crown Perth in Western Australia! Be sure to join us for more action from 12.30pm tomorrow.

Just Another Set for the Mac

Level 6 : 300/600, 75 ante

Jesse McKenzie's reign of terror has continued into the final hands of the night. McKenzie's latest escapade saw him put a player all in on the river of a {9-Clubs}{j-Hearts}{7-Diamonds}{4-Hearts}{5-Hearts} board. The player called, then mucked and exited the tournament area when McKenzie turned over {4-Spades}{4-Clubs} for a turned set.

With that McKenzie has around 160,000 in chips and will almost certainly be our Day 1b chip leader.

Three More Hands

Level 6 : 300/600, 75 ante

The players have just been told there will be three more hands before calling it a night. Stay tuned to find out who makes it through to Day 2 and for a full wrap of today's action.

Prize Pool Adjustment

Level 6 : 300/600, 75 ante

We have just received word that the previously announced prize pool was missing one player who was a no show. This means that the official entries for the 2013 ANZPT Perth Main Event is 219. We will publish the official prize pool as soon as it is adjusted and made available.

McKenzie Rampages

Level 6 : 300/600, 75 ante

Jesse McKenzie has gone on a bit of a rampage late in the day. McKenzie has been active most of the day and it has now paid off as he is the first player to hit the six-figure mark and will likely finish the night as the chip leader.

We didn't catch the major hand that saw McKenzie's stack rise above 100,000 in chips, but McKenzie let us know that it happened when a player with top pair thought it would be a good idea to jam into McKenzie's set.

Guzzardi Winning Some

Level 6 : 300/600, 75 ante

Michael Guzzardi is currently leading the ANZ Player of the Year leader board. Trailing Guzzardi closely are Paul Hockin and Ashley Warner. Both Hockin and Warner have been eliminated from today's action, but recently found the time to go and heckle Guzzardi from the rail.

Guzzardi was involved in a hand when Warner and Hockin gave him a good-natured heckle. The hand in question began with Guzzardi opening the cutoff to 1,200. The player in the big blind made the call and the dealer flipped over a {5-Clubs}{6-Diamonds}{6-Hearts} flop. The big blind checked and Guzzardi led for 1,500. A call would see a {j-Hearts} hit the turn and this time Guzzardi would bet 2,500 when the action was checked. That bet was too much for Guzzardi's opponent, with some chips going the Melbournian's way.

Warner and Hockin will watch on over the next few days and quietly hope that Guzzardi doesn't earn himself too many ANZ Player of the Year points.

Ballard and Gorr

Level 6 : 300/600, 75 ante

ANZPT regular Stewart Ballard and 2011 Aussie Millions Champion David Gorr have been sitting next to each other for much of the late half of the night, but have seemingly been chatting with each other more often than playing hands against each other. We did recently catch the two players battle out a hand. It began with Gorr opening to 1,700 from the button, which Ballard called from the button.

On the {4-Clubs}{4-Hearts}{4-Diamonds} flop, Ballard checked and Gorr quickly bet 2,200. Ballard didn't want any part of the action, letting his hand go and sending the pot to Gorr. As Gorr stacked his new chips, Gorr and Ballard went back to chatting. Both of these players are looking very likely to survive the night.
