River Traps Alspach

It started out as a friendly, four-way, unraised pot at Dan Alspach's table. He had position for the hand. All four players checked a flop that came down {5-Diamonds}

. On the

turn, action checked to the second player to act, who bet 800. Alspach called, as did the small blind.

The river was the {10-Spades}

to put a full house on board. The small blind chose that street to lead out for 2,000. Only Alspach called. He showed {J-Spades}

for a full house bigger than the board, but the small blind had flopped quads with {5-Clubs}

.

"Nice river, nice river," lamented Alspach.

Ivan Tan has been accumulating chips very quietly today. His current chip count is approximately 24,000, and that's after taking a small hit in a three-way pot with Casey Kastle and one other player. On a flop of {8-Spades}

, Tan bet 1,625. Only the button called. When the turn was another baby, the {5-Diamonds}

, Tan bet 1,625 again. Again the button called.

The river was the {7-Clubs}

, bringing quick checks from both players. Tan turned over {A-Spades}

for a busted flush draw, a busted straight draw and two overcards that missed. His opponent showed {10-Hearts}

for top pair and scooped the pot.

Nelson Struggling

Lee Nelson is finding the going tough out there today as his stack continues to head in the wrong direction. In a recent pot he opened with a raise from early position to 850 before the player to his immediate left put in a small re-raise to 1,700. The table folded around and Nelson thought long and hard before committing another 850 into the middle.

The flop came down {5-Diamonds}

and Nelson checked to his opponent who fired out 1,600. Nelson only had about 4,500 behind, but decided to save them for a better spot as he laid his hand down.

Eddy Exits

In a raised pot, William Te Jr fired out 6,000 from under the gun on a board of {Q-Clubs}

into 2008 APPT Macau Champion Eddy Sabat.

Sabat deliberated before making the call and the two players saw the {2-Hearts}

fall on the river to put four hearts on board. Te Jr confidently moved all in for 6,850 which was enough to cover Sabat who went into the tank.

"If I call this could be the sickest call ever!" laughed Sabat as he continued to deliberate, "I can beat two black fours!" Eventually Te Jr called the clock on Sabat and he decided to make the call.

Te Jr revealed {J-Hearts}

for the flush which was too good for Sabat as he tossed his cards into the muck and exited the tournament area. Sabat will now have to wait for the APPT Grand Final in Sydney to collect a second APPT title.

The Champ Finds Queens

Brett Parise - defending APPT Manila Champion

Brett Parise has just eliminated a player after opening the action with a raise from the button, the player in the small blind moved all in for his last 5,000 chips with {A-Hearts}

but Parise made the call with {Q-Clubs}

.

The board ran out {8-Clubs}

and the queens hold for Parise to send his opponent to the rail and jump himself up to 27,000 chips.

. Ellis raised that bet to 3,100 and was called. She took the pot down on the {J-Hearts}

turn with a bet of 4,000.

On the last hand before the break, Tasha Ellis, Dennis Huntly and a third player were all involved in a preflop raising war. Ellis started the action with a raise to 625 that Huntly called. The player in the big blind then reraised to 2,025. Ellis debated her options before putting in a third raise to 5,000 straight. That raise agonized Huntly, but he eventually folded what he later said was ace-queen. The big blind had only 2,000 more behind his initial raise and shipped those chips in. His {K-Spades}
